Getting on the 9 train, or not

I got on the 9 train, but I think I want to get off at the next stop.
As others have mentioned, there are a few things that seem like a step back from G8/8.1
But one of the biggest turn-offs for me is G9's breasts (female).   They seem to point unnatrually outward (like the reverse of cross-eyed),  I can't seem to improve the shapes to make them look more "normal", even though I have several morph packages for G9.
Anyway, I'm not really here to complain about that, I'm just wondering if anyone else has an issue with this?

    Yes.

If anyone hasn't tried G9, today's Vicky deal is a good place to start.

I had no intention of getting V9 but I'm congenitally unable to resist such a good deal.

I actually did want V9, but have a very limited budget for 3D assets these days, so I gladly welcome the deal. Eventually I'll pick up her mega bundle as well, because I think I want more components of that than any other bundle out.

If anyone picks up the new SC Fantasy Armor outfit, could you tell me if the breasts are baked into the model or not? I don't want to waste time buying more clothes for Gen9 if they're going to be female-only. Or, I dunno, put it in the title: "for G9 Feminine."

EDIT: Never mind (not that anyone noticed anyway); I was dense and forgot I could check the supported morphs section. No sale, feminine only. I wonder what the point of making G9 was if artists are only going to bother supporting only one gender in it. Doesn't show much confidence in their own product if they don't ask their artists to support it fully.

I hope someone makes a Cross-Figure Morph Kit for G9, because at least with G8 I could convert the good female clothes to the men. With G9 I'm just SOL apparently.

Between the workarounds I have to do, to get G9 to do what past figures can do out of the box, the increasing amount of buyers remorse I'm seeing from early adopters and Daz3D spox insisting these downgrades are good things, I'm now 100% in the "do not want" camp. A few nice character morphs won't change my mind.

Waiting for people to jump out and say "you all are holding a petty grudge against G9 / fighting a losing battle" etc LOL.

I actually don't see much buyers remorse. There are not many things that you have to buy unless you are a collector (or those who did have buyers remorse just stopped buying).

Anyways I hopped on for a test ride. Didn't love it, but didn't hate it either. I am sure I will pick up ALL the G9 merchant resources eventually, when they are at 70% off or more. Maybe a few characters which I really like, but it's not like I need G9. At least I am not convinced that I need it now.

It's typical of a new release with not enough options to please everyone....yet. I have been playing with G9 in DS 4,15 and so far I like some things, and dislike others. Once there are enough resources to allow me to use G9 in actual projects, I will probably be on board the G9 train full time

    I skipped G3 entirely. So I'll manage.

I don't hate G9, but it is a huge pain to use so I do have buyer's remorse in that if I could go back I wouldn't have spent what I did when it first came out. Could be my fault for having had too many expectations to begin with.

I just feel the whole unified character thing has just added too many steps to the process both in the character creation and the asset sorting for wardrobe pieces. Daz's search function isn't great as it is and I have so many assets I can already see what it'll look like if I buy more G9 stuff. It'll look like how I keep my socks: unsorted in a bucket.

I'd need some extra correctives for G9 armpits, elbows, knees and hips to embrace it fully. Especially elbows and knees.

When I'm placing G9 character next to G8+ and the older generation is equipped with morph enhancers... The newer generation looks slightly off. For now it's sit and wait until Genesis 9 grows more.

Anyone can confirm that G9 works on 4.15?

  • I've bought far more G9 than I need or thought. I was always looking to buy the head and body morphs and got them for a really good price. Also couldn't turn down the Bachelorette and Bachelor bundles as I like the male apartment and the price was so low. Finally couldn't refuse V9 for $7.65 and a few cheap items from M9 bundle. Find it a bit odd that Genesis 9 has lots of dolls already (Joe Quick, Josie and now Pixie)

will confess I have not used G9 (in the form of V9) since trying to dForce the new G9 version of Voss Hair and having it mould itself across V9's face as if there was a stong wind in the +X direction (there wasn't, just gravity in -Y, suggesting the hair is not suitable for dForce, no surprise as I'm sure it would have been offered as a dForce hair if it was). That was 2 weeks after release. And I have not touched G9 since. Too expensive and offers little improvement in my normal rendering locations (distance viewing & landscapes). Definitelybetter for close-ups, which I don't often do.

    Regards,

    Richard

Depends on what you mean by "works".

G9 loads into the scene ok and one can pose and morph the figure like any previous generation.

Yeah, I mean if figure could be loaded, morphs, pose and materials applied, clothing fits etc.

I remember when G8 appeared (original, not 8.1), it worked in 4.8 (with some limitations like can not use new face mimic tool or apply poses from G3)

It is getting too expensive (now we're buying pose sets piecemeal? I don't think so...lol). Only two males (and the one I don't even like much because it came in a bundle). Think I'm gonna bow out for awhile until there's actually content I want for it. Pixie ain't it. I'll wait...and watch.

    Can someone please tell me,

How many polygons does G9 have??

I can't find this answer anywhere after googling and searching this forum for a good while..

Everything else works, but the new LIE's may not due to the changes/improvements in how LIE is handled.

When are they going to have V-9 hair? Not just V-3 hair that fits on a V-9... some kind of advanced hair to match the advanced bodies. We are like 6 versions behind in the hair department.

I'd say that the bodies, eyes, finger-nails, toe-nails, lips, expressions, clothing, shoes and underwear have far surpassed any hair, pose and animation potentials.

I still feel like, without extensive post-editing, hair is still the biggest tell-tale sign that these things are not realistic. The stiff, unbalanced, unnatural poses and animations, where they apply, are the two other areas that need some kind of a V-9 advancement.

It's like the models are all stuck in the 80's with "big hair", to hide the flaws... Or they are lifeless painted skull-caps of nearly-bald... Or they are bowl-cuts of "mannequin perfection", or wigs. The gravity and flowing helps, but there is only so much that 400 repeating "ribbons" of the same 200 strands of hair can represent in one model with more topology than the actual models parent body and clothing has within it.

P.S. Strand-based hair is NOT an advancement, it's a regurgitated "better bad idea", {better then the original bad idea} from 10 years ago, when hardware choked processing it MORE than it does now. It's still bad, just 10x faster! :P That's like having a Formula-1 race-car with round stone tires, instead of square stone tires.

    Thank you so much!

  • Well I got on the V9 train and whilst she's a very realistic - and expensive model, I didn't think the inreased render times were worth it and I'd have to spend a LOT more money to get anywhere near my G8 collection. So I got off.

I'm not getting on in the next year or two. Some things sound better, some sound worse, and i need to spend money on other (non 3D) things.

I think the important questions are whether you're happy with the results you get now, and whether G9 represents an improvement. In my case:

    • Yes, I'm very happy. I like 8.1 a lot and I have a lot of assets.
    • No. I don't feel that if shown two renders, I could say which was 8.1 and which was 9.

  • Was hoping on and off. But I cannot get myself used to G9 somehow. Plus I have so much G8 stuff that I have not yet fully employed. So I guess I will stay on the G8/8.1-train for quite some time.

Although I appreciate the efforts of the DAZ team and the PAs I'm going to have to let the train pass by. First of all, the overall look of a "uni figure" doesn't appeal to me.  There's just something about the shoulders and chest that's "off" to my view. That's why I waited until Genesis 2 to come over from Poser. But others may see different and that's OK.  Art afterall is very personal. Second, I just don't have the money to spend on G9 stuff right now, or the inclination to swap all my chacters to the figure ( I use all home made ones). So for now I'll stay with G8 and start a G10 savings fund to see what happens when that rolls around. wink

Looking at the Daz timelime, V4 came out in 2006 and had a good 5-year run until 2011 when Genesis 1 was released. Then you had G2 in 2013, G3 in 2015 and G8 in 2017. Given that G3 and G8 are so similar, it's almost as if G8 had a 7-year run. So much was developed for G3/G8/G8.1, and now with G9 it's starting all over again. But how much time will it take for G9 content to be comparable to G8? Secondly, I use Daz for non photorealistic renders, using non-realistic characters, so I really don't have a need for G9 at this point.I would be buying G9 content just to have it, but I probably wouldn't use it too much right now. However, I'll have to see what's offered for G9 in the future. But for now, I'm still very much engaged with G8.

I'm so on the fence right now. I have new morphs and a pose converter in my cart right now but do I really need them? I really hate the surfaces for G9's face and it's more work to get it the way I want but I did get Cayman's texture converter from G8 so I can get the lips back in its own surface using G8 textures but that's an extra step, and for what purpose? I have one foot on a train going somewhere I'm not really interested in going to. I really wish I liked G9 more than I do and it's starting to feel stupid spending money on something I don't need or want just because it's new.

Edited to say, I just dumped the cart and just got a couple of DAZ+ items to keep the 35% off. I can wait to get G9 stuff when over 75% off if I'm still interested. I really do wish I liked G9 better but I just don't. I thought we were supposed to be able to create our own animals or creatures with it but it just seems like it's going backwards from G8.1.
