This thread has been lightened, please don't make us play the heavy.
Although G9 does not prevent certain classic female body shapes, it doesn't appear to be assisting either---in the way that past generations included basic human muscular formation in the figure. Many PAs seem unable to fashion from G9---judging by results---the female shapes that have been ubiquitous since V4.
Many PAs probably aren't fluid yet in always equipping figures with JCMs. Making corrective morphs is not difficult, but it's time consuming and menial.
G8 and G9 do not use any different technology for correctives, but G8 base looks "good enough" without custom JCMs if the character shape did not stray too much from the skeleton and even then half of the time adjusting bones to shape would do the trick without extra JCMs.
That's not the case with G9 where JCMs are very much mandatory. I think it's going to take a while for everybody to catch up.
Optionally something like natural bend morphs will come and everyone will be using it.
The proportions of genesis 9 are my biggest hurdle. I keep waiting for male figures like Toment 8.1 or official shapes to be imported because it matches the style I am used to for genesis 8. Yes, I can import official shapes by using the morph transfer clone method but it is not a perfect process and there is no hd which you need to get the complete look.
so while I love the clothing, hair and and accessories of gen 9, I struggle with the choice to go real world on the base human figures shap since it's just not what I need. I think more morphs bringing back the older figure proportions would be welcome. I do attempt to lengthen legs, shorten torso, and make the heads smaller, but it's not an exact process.
Hmm. You would have hoped for a unisex set of JCM's, then the female base character would add another layer of JCM's on top to make a pretty decent base female, and similarly for a base male. Then each character would only add a limited change set of JCM's onto the appropriate male/female base JCM and the Unisex JCM. [OK, I know the term 'jcm' is out of date for this current generation, but this way a majority know what I mean.]
I'm surprised that it doesn't appear to be the way it's done.

Richard
And I am thinking, that besides of many issues the G9 proprtions are finally correct, this time.
Previous Figures were often designed like stylized superhero bodies.
If there's one thing i like about G9, in spite of issues I have with it, it's proportions. I can set modelish ones, but I don't have to. Not everyone is a crossbreed of a top model and NBA player as well.
Everyone likes different stuff. I see no reason people can't have both. I was simply explaining why it doesn't work for me, without a way to quickly alter proportions to be similar to what I have already invested in with genesis 8.
I'd love to see a G9 version of Torment. He's one of the best figures. On the other hand, I don't miss the G8 female proportions; they were lollypop girls–skinny body and huge head. I always had to at least increase shoulder width.
I folded. Bought the darn suff and somehow picked up a characer. Now I'm doomed. She looks better in the promos too.
On previous generations, I had shapes like Torment 8.1, Kwan 8, Lee 7, Zelara 8, Rosa Maria 8.1, or The Girl---to cite various physical ideals---but this has not yet occurred. Zeddicuss' G9 dialed morph types lack the aesthetics (and built-in JCM/CBSs) of their G8 versions. HM is closer to their G8 morphs but is still not hitting the ideals I'd grown accustomed too. I've always found it difficult to dial the bodies I wanted from scratch (without using another full body morph as a starting point), and the G9 bases and Core Figures almost guarantee my failure this generation.
lol
If I were doing marketing at Daz I'd commission Mousso to redo Antheia HD for Gen 9. This way Daz could sell G9 version to everyone who wanted it, who but couldn't get it. Without compromising exclusivity and rarity of the G8.1 version.
Hm... Perhaps it's good I'm not doing marketing at Daz.
Unlike most here I'm not on the fence, it's a given that I'll be using G9, just as with G8, and G3 I was waiting for natural bend morphs before diving in, same story here! But waiting for natural bend morphs could take a year before I can fully use and buy some Zev0/Riversoft gear for G9, I still haven't even thought of V9 yet, the wait would be a lot less painful if K.H.Image studio had a presence here in the forums!
To those on the fence, but find themselves feeling like bending to the all mighty FOMO("fear of missing out", for those who don't wanna google that), I say this: Don't.
I stuck with Genesis 1 and 2, and skipped 3 entirely. I only dipped my foot into the G8 eco system a year ago, well after all the kinks had been worked out.
Considering the base figures are all free, there is no reason not to try them out to see if you like them. There is plenty of free things as well to play with. At least by trying the bases out, you have the opportunity to make an informed decision.
Chris, or anyone, can I ask what the Thigh Twist 1 & 2 bones are for? (Sorry, I don't have my DS machine in front of me at the moment, maybe I have the wrong names for them, but they're the bones attached to the thigh bone that cause a twist of the thigh muscles and have no sub-bones.)
Are they there mostly to be operated by joint parameters and mostly left alone by users, or are they intentended to be activated in animations to jiggle as the character moves? So far, with still images I've mostly left well alone (on the 'Don't press the red button if you have no idea what it's meant to do' principle) and it really seems to have no practical benefit as far as I can see on the occasions I've tried to do something with them.

Richard
I'm more or less on the train now... Well, more like I'm clinging onto the back of the train like Indiana Jones while I check what's left in my wallet, LOL.
I was slightly excited for awhile, But then there was a bunch of confusion about the "pre-orders" or whatever they were. Then I saw the "Vanity" folders that hide the assets. That was it for me. I only bought a couple Genesis 9 addons.
I've found so far , the clothes I have from G8 fit G9, so that is good. I did buy the shapes, head, body, expressions so that I could at least change up the figures. That was where I was going to stop, but then a couple days ago a character came out..had to buy her. MW Helena for Genesis 9 | Daz 3D Anyway, the main thing are skin textures for me. The 4 that come with the base a pretty darn good. I think if anything worth learning it is scupting in ZBrush, or maybe you can do it in Blender, and the ability to create skin textures. There are quite a few skin resources available, but to pet them together to look good, seamless, and the different body areas is a skill that takes a lot of practice.
I've been glossing over G9 stuff, is there a product that will allow G8 or even earlier skin textures to be used on G9?
Legacy UVs for Genesis 9: Genesis 3, 8, and 8.1 Female, although I've found it can be a bit twitchy to use.
I've bought a few G9 characters and items to play with but I find them very underwhelming. And I don't mean that as a slight to the PA's. I know that they are great artists doing something I absolutely can't do. But the G9 figures are just not interesting to me. I agree that the proportions are frustrating. I hear everyone talking about "realism" but I don't find them particularly realistic... just odd. I also struggle with the skins. With the exception of V9, the skins have all been pretty generic and most have an odd, doughy texture to my eye. I heard someone else mentioning that the shoulders, knees, etc. all seemed off and lacking to them and that's an issue I've had as well. I went to look and yeah, a lot of the shoulders, for example, feel shapless and just... there.
So, while I will continue to pick up the occasional G9 product because I want to keep giving them a chance, I've yet to find any G9 figure that I would actually use in a render.
Add that to the fact that I find all the fiddliness of having nipples and tears and other bits hidden away in other folders and not being able to see them properly without futzing around with a bunch of settings and... yeah... why would I put myself through that when G8/8.1 are still amazing? I'm not a power user. I've said this before. Learning the deep magic of daz like clones and joint control rigs and exporting and importing in and out of other programs is way beyond my skills. I need a figure that works out of the box, lets me play with morphs, and comes out looking good. G9 might be a playground but it's a really complicated one where I don't feel like I have much fun.
Just my two cents.
Legacy UVs for Genesis 9 G3/8/8.1M G3/8/8.1F
Mada crafted the clones for G9, iirc, and I think that's why autofit works so well for them. I wish she would fix the G8 clones as well.
MW Helena did it for me too, although I was buying Core Figures all along, hoping for a breakthrough.
Over one third of my library is G3. The vast majority is G8+. There's now a speckle of G9 too, but I couldn't care less which generation and I'm fine with stuffing all three into the same scene if it looks good.
Some of my absolute favorite characters are G3 and those will stay G3 forever now when G8+ also moves into the discontinued territory. It's not like I will ever move to G9 entirely even if I wanted.
With enough Blender and a sledgehammer big enough outfits and accessories will convert anyway.
There's no point in wondering which generation to use. If you prefer look on the G8+, use G8+. Majority of G9 releases double down on themes that were done to death for G3 and G8+ anyway.
If you want a specific character from G9, then get this and use it with your other assets. If you don't want G9 then don't.
Back in September I had to re-arrange my library to spread things over three internal 2 TB SSDs. In the process I found I had over 150 G8F characters; I didn't even try to count the earlier generations. At the same time, my stable of actresses runs to just over 40 - a mix of A3, G3, and G8. I anticipate that I will end up with up to 8 G9F and possibly one or two less G9M by the end of the year, and that will be the end of it. I will no longer be picking up characters of any previous generations - I've got too many I'll never use already.
thanks fior the links to the legacy uv sets for G9...into my wishlist.
While I am not really on the 9 train at all, I am cherry picking items that pop up that I think would be nice. But I'm not going crazy buying things, probably my buying is extremly comatose-tame for the 9 family. I'm just not liking this new mega bundle out every other day-week, shoved down my throat, kind of thing that they started with 8. It's wearing me out, and I don't mean the bank account, it's not letting me savor the idea of what to create with the new figure. It's just constant nonstop and I've gone numb to the whole creation phase having been at this for almost 20 years! I figure just like the 8 family going on a super deep discount last month or so, I'm sure I can wait for the 9 family to go on the same trip at some point down the road. I think as much money that we've given DAZ over the years, they can afford to update their Smiley collection for the forums...
Do I need another Orc? Same answer.
...still at the station, the G9 train left a long time ago.
