But for now, I'm still very much engaged with G8.

Yep, me too, but I'm not sure if G9 will last that long, tech is developing faster in all fields all the time, and I can easily imagine what looks cool today may look dated sooner than before. V9 looks very realistic, but no PA product has reached that level. And if I look at developments of skin with Reallusions' SkinGen or examples like Project Jeanne on ArtStation by Andrea Bertaccini, I can't help to wonder how soon we'll see a G9.1 or G10.

Of course these types of assets require more GPU power, but I'm guessing I will have that once G10 releases. And since the difference between G8.1 and G9 isn't that big or sometimes just not there, I'd rather skip G9 and wait for G10. That would save me a lot of money, and with the current situation in the world/economy a wiser choice for me.

That doesn't look any more real than G8 or G9 to me and has the same problem with huge pores that G9 does. This is my render with G9, same oversized pores. I can figure out how to reduce them but I don't know anyone whose pores or skin is that detailed unless you are two inches from them. Photos in magazines don't have all that skin detail. It's overkill.

uh well go take some pictures of models skin with 8K SLR or whatever those high res cameras are make 8000x80000 iray textures with the 8K overlay and I'm sure Daz Studio could and can render phinominal renders, if you have the assets and tools - and then knowledge and skill.

I remmber the Maya 1.0 demo Bruce Lee animaiton.  I'm still looking for the tools, assets and knowledge and skills to do something that was done in the way back machine in the current daz studio software.

With the release of Riversoft Art's Bone Minion bundle for G9, I'm ready to at least start experimenting with G9.  I haven't bought any G9 native poses, but at least now the rest of my pose library has been restored to me.  Another must have for me is 3d Universe's Pose Architect.  After using Pose Architect to tweak and fine tune poses - I simply can't go back to a world without it!  I'll do a test run of renders with G9 now that I can at least pose the figure.

But until 3D Universe does their magic, G9 is like that rookie that shows a lot of promise, but isn't quite ready to come off the bench.  G8 is still very much the starter.  To be fair, my starting rotation includes figures from every generation, so I've no doubt that G9 will eventually get there.  In the meantime, I'm enjoying the awesome sales on G8 / 8.1 content, and await my favorite PAs to do their magic.  Oh, and Aiko9.  She'll be a day 1 insta-purchase!

I think the skin on this model is quite a bit better than on the Daz figures (images are links to bigger examples).

I really don't see how they are the same quality.

Still, V9 quality skin is not what PA's are offering (up till now), which makes G9 not better than G8.1 in daily practice, and a generation that I have no problem skipping. I understand this will be different for folks who do not make photo-realistic renders, but I don't understand what G9 could offer them at all besides a higher price.

The reason models in magazines don't have pores is because they are photoshopped out of the images. People in reality on the otherhand do have pores and skin texture, but somewhere along the line that was deemed ugly.

It's hard to make an assessment of the relative quality of the two models in such different renders.

I'd say V4 was pretty popular up until around G3 era - if we consider communities outside of DAZ3D. For Poser users, Dawn/Dusk were first attempt to make a new figure, and subjectively it didn't reach big success, but I think Belle was better received. Correct me if i'm wrong... But anyway... I'd say that during G1/G2 days I surely remember seeing new V4 characters from "major" vendors at R.

...getting harder and harder to avoid G9 as most new releases, save for sets vehicles and props, are pretty much all for G9.  More and more, the Holiday Sales have tended to require debut releases and (which again are predominantly G9) along with G9 bundles to unlock discounts making for slimmer pickings if one didn't board the train.. I've even  passed on freebies and Daz+ items that were G9.

Exactly. If you look at 99% of people's skin, you'll see pores, protrusions, dips, freckles, and discolorations. When I don't see this, it screams 'pretty art' but definitely not realistic imo. I might be reading the descriptions wrong but when looking at G9 females released on the material side of things very few seem to be using all the G9 features that say vicky9 uses, almost as if the texures have no advantage over what could be done in G8.

Am I wrong or is this what other people are seeing??

Wonderland does have a point, though. Of course, adult skin does have pores and blemishes and whatnot, but heavy makeup - like used for many 3d models as well - conceals all of that to quite an astonishing extent. If you use a foundation plus concealer plus base plus powder plus blush plus bronzer plus ..., there's really not much left of your natural skin that will show ;-) That's the whole idea of makeup like that. So, if a face is as heavily made up as the own Wonderland presented above, the pores of that poor woman must be like craters en naturel. I do have bigger pores in some parts of my face, and when I paste over them even with just a BB cream, there're already virtually invisible. So it seems to me, too, that the pores thing has been taken to a digital extreme that overdoes real life by far.

Also, real skins are so very different from each other. There are adult women (and even some men) out there with tiny pores and babylike skin - most of them non-smokers, I bet ;-) And of course, younger skin is usually finer anyway.

I think you're right, and I'm seeing it too. MallenLane said that the Genesis 9 8k detail normals are available for any Genesis 9. So, either those 8k maps are not being loaded on the rest of the G9 characters, or Victoria 9 & Michael 9 have skin far superior in realism to the rest.

Victoria 9's freckles only skin submarined it as a go-to for me.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're both saying, but PAs (from what I've read) are not obligated to provide 8k maps for the figures that they produce. You can use the G9 detail map for any G9 figure that doesn't come with one by clicking 'Detail Enable' on in the Surfaces tab and adding the map in the 'Detail Normal Map' section.

Where exactly are the 8k maps?

    Thanks.

Edit: it's ok i've found them... never noticed there was a Detail Normal Map section in addition to the Normal map section (so many blind spots!)

Not really saying anything just asking mostly. You are correct no-one is obligated but the thread is about discussing if to take the plunge into gen9 and if other than Vicky9 and Mike9 that offer a visual advantage over gen8.1 not sure if its the correct move for me. i will wait until somebody makes something that makes me switch like the skin for Vick8.1 made start buying 8.1 stuff.

I thought that 8k maps are for all G9 figures when G9 first launched. Then I found out it's not. And then I further found that the 8k maps are just normal details. LOL. But after all it's DAZland, it's all about your very own understanding on those clever advertising words. NOBODY is misleading you.

@SolitarySandpiper - great, glad that you were able to find them. I could be wrong, but I think it's only available with the PBR skin shader. I don't think it's an option with the Iray shader. And yes, soooo many blind spots. lol

@Moogoo - oh gotcha. Yeah, I agree..as far as skin textures go, I'm still waiting for something that strikes my personal preference as far as realism goes (other than V9).  I really like the Feminine 01 G9 skin texture that was included for free (it's the same skin texture as V8.1) and isn't so distinctive as V9. For me, the eyes and the expressions are really what make G9 stand out, but there are definitely some steps backwards for the figure. I have so much content from G1/G2/G3/G8 that I'm being much more selective about what I purchase for G9, but I'm on the train. :)

@CHWT - don't forget about HD that may or may not be included. ;)

Yes, you are correct. So it's more like V4 had a 9-year run. Many products were released that included versions for V4, G1 & G2. When G3 came along, V4 development started to drop off.

Yep, that's really the one that I've been playing around with (I really think it's a beautiful texture and with LIE, you can add freckles/discoloration and use displacement for moles/skin divets to increase realism on your own using photoshop/gimp)..I haven't played around with the other included textures but I remember reading somewhere that another one of the included (free) textures comes from a previous 8.1 version too. I'm not opposed to buying new G9 figures for improved skin textures, but I'm also really enjoying learning how to do work arounds for myself until I see something that warrants the increased costs that I'm seeing for the characters (this is not to disparage the quality work of PAs, it's just the current economic state of things..I feel kind of bad, I think it's just bad timing for a new figure to be released when inflation is sky rocketing and the economy is in the state that it's in..I think more people would be open to G9 but when you see the prices...sigh.) sad

It's always fun to put G8 and G9 together in the same scene and find ways to improve the G8 texture and shader so that it's not overshadowed by G9 (or the skin looks even better than G9). I love doing that

I think I'll be getting OFF the G9 train for a while, until something similar to natural bend morphs or auto shape enhancer is made for G9. It's really needed for this figure because bending on limb joints make it look almost like a throwback to M4/V4.

Edit: maybe I'm being too dramatic making this comparison. More like throwback to G3, but it's a downgrade for dynamic poses.

But not everyone wears thirteen layers of makeup. I don't. I do my brows, some eyeliner, and maybe some finishing powder on my t-zone to keep the shinies away. That's it. I'd like to think the whole thirteen layers of makeup thing is reserved for instagram models, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's just that I live on the east coast and I don't see many women walking around doing their daily living behind a virtual mask they need to scrape off with a spoon.

So it would make sense to me for character skins to drop out of the box makeup free. Show me that real skin! Then if a user so prefers, they can cake on the makeup as thick as they want. V9 even has makeup that does that. It was sold separately, but it's out there. The full-face makeup presets reduce the look of the pores. I think there should be an option for those who want the full monty makeup-wise...and also a clean face for those who don't.

    Can't decide:

    - I'm having the train sideways anyway, right now.

    - I'm the train.

    - I'm the tracks.

    - I already laid out all sorts of traps for it.

    - The elusive G9 is a train?

    - Feels more like i'm the roadkill.

    - Haven't noticed, just keep buying stuff...

    - Wasn't it supposed to be a moon?

Other than that, i am getting some stuff i deem good per se, as well as some of the first stuff available, just so. It looks like some of the stuff i am planning can profit from G9 more than from the other generations, being a beginner at actually using stuff, and G8 remaining the heaviest part in my library. It's not on the "must fit into monthly salary"-budget, in my case, though.

    Here`s a trippy thing though....

I work with people. At least 150 during my shift.

I dont know about everyone else, but when I talk to people face to face, Im drawn to their eyes, never to their pores, In fact I never notice thir pores unless they have a really bad complexion to where it really really sticks out to the point where its disctacting.

Now it may be that the artists are shooting for that, but a lot of times when I look at some daz portrait art, Im drawn to the pores more than anything else. Im not saying its a bad thing because that may be the artist`s intention. Im just saying that pores that become the "center of interest", make the image look unrealistic.

But thats just my opinion, and it may stink LOL
