I'm hoping things pick up and get better when Mike makes an appearance ;)
The Victoria 9 vs. the other released figures is right on point. Victoria 9 was a great figure with a great head/face and wonderful skin. Everything since has been pretty generic and honestly, I could not tell you the difference between g8 and g9 except the posing and bends look bad on g9 and that's how I can tell the difference. And I'm sure someone is gonna say "they don't look bad, or we updated this to some new something or another..." The attached pic is from the Stella HD figure's promo images. Feet don't do that. Heck, I13 has a product on Renderosity design to fix the foot bends of V4 so it doesn't do that.
And I don't think that g8's bends and jcm's didn't have issues, they have their own. But I'm not seeing any real fixes for g8's issues, but I do see new issues for g9 that I'm going to have to fix too.
I do see improvements to the eyes, but you can easily turn g9's conforming eyes into a prop for g8 and I've written instructions for that in another thread. I do think the higher rez base mesh is an improvement but neither figure can do HD morphs so it's a minor improvement not a major one.
I just don't see the point in starting over for so little improvements, and new issues. And I say this as someone who has eagerly moved from g1 to g2 to g3 to g8. As others have said, this seems like a cash grab to reset the figure and have us buy stuff again. Which only works as a business plan if you can convince the users to leave and move to the new figure.
The only thing I have been surprised by this time is that many more people still seem to feel this way about g9 3 weeks post launch.
My Genesis 9 content is still the same as the one I started with, so the morph pack, nathy's morphs and the character essentials. My wishlist is growing but pretty much all the stuff there is sort of "eh, okay, nice but do I really need this?" stuff. I mean the demons are cool but I already have demons with G8. The Dystopia Pompahawk is the only piece that really stands out to me, but I can't yet use it with the type of characters I tend to roll with (it would require brute character shape), so there's no really much reason for me to pull the trigger. I guess the Barbarian armor is sort of interesting, too, because it has a lot of "tons of leather straps" potential which is not something you often see for guys but again I'd have to wait for suitable morphs for a Diablo style fantasy barbarian.
On a positive note this sort of renewed my interest in G8/8.1 and I've been rolling out some character types and themes I don't normally do, and redoing older ones that feel outdated. I was stuck rolling out characters which in game terms I would call background NPCs or just the hulking brute types instead of ones that are more varied. Now I have added a bit more variety though I guess even my skinniest adventurer characters still have biceps the size of beefier than average bodybuilder... just can't help but dial at least a bit of brute in them.
Eh, that's my kink I guess...
THIS.... is precisely the sentiment I am sharing. The return on investment for incremental progress is not worthwhile. If anything, I think Victoria 9 should have been gifted to all DAZ users and then all the addons are purchasable or even throw it in to commemorate the launch of GEN 9.
...G8 content already has shown up in the "cheap Seats". During the abbreviated Daz+ Anneversary Sale a number of products wound up inthe Daz+ For A Day selection for 2.99$ (1.99 for Daz+ members). Im', also seeing more and more in Fastgrab and in Flash Sales as well
I'm at the point now where I can't see much in the store that I actually want. I have amassed so much G8 content (even more than I had for V4 all those years ago) that I hardly ever see anything in the store that tempts me - even at big discounts. I'm certainly not going to start over again with G9 because I don't see - from any of the renders posted so far (or even the nice promo done by Jay) - anything that I couldn't do with G8. I don't do close-ups and I have tons of body shaping morphs and skins for G8 so why would I want to start over?
I get it that DAZ needs to keep releasing new figures to renew the sales cycle and I can see why people with healthy bank accounts might be tempted to jump on this train but I don't see any convincing reason for me to follow suit. So I can see my spending tailing off for a while until DAZ does come up with something revolutionary - perhaps a human figure with soft-body physics? I would start buying again so readily if that appeared in the store but I am beginning to believe I am too old to hold out a hope that I will see it in my remaining lifetime.
In the meantime, I enjoy dressing up my G8 dolls and making pictures while cursing how slow dForce still is or how I have to redo my render because I notice a toe going through a floorboard. I have high hopes for DS5 but DAZ has crushed high hopes so often in the past that I find myself wishing that some other revolutionary software will suddenly appear.
While I'm leaning more towards giving G9 a chance. The "make or break" moment for me will be how the next generation of anime/toon adult characters look.
I am thinking a similar thing I know for one, I might start working one more and varied environment content. Such as props, complete scenes and that sort of thing, also scripts for Studio that make work flow easier. But yeah I am hoping that DS5 is good, but will have to wait and see I guess.
I'm mostly interested in using Daz stuff for game dev, so I don't see any reason to get into G9 atm. The promos look nice, though! And I'm looking forward to previous generations getting cheaper.
You should never need to redo a render over a minor issue like a toe going through the floor, unless you need to raise the entire figure to fix. Just make the correction, then spot render the part that changed, it will be a lot faster that way.
Hi. I only saw this post just now :-) The pose converter by Protozoon and myself is still in the queue at Daz and will come out soon -- we have no control over the release dates, but it has not been forgotten!
I only recently got on the G8 train so I'll stick with that for now as there is plenty of content and now probably a bit less expensive, I hope that content vendors will provide the ability to use the new stuff on both G8 and G9 for some time yet, or a way to bridge back to G8.
As for G9 in its introduction state, I was really hoping for something that would really advance the technology here, such as some sort of soft body mechanics incorporated and/or skelitan/muscle/flesh paramemeters that would still work with morphs, but advance the platform is such a way that posing and animation was a bit more reactive to physics that DAZ has recently developed. As it stands now, G9 simply is a higher resolution version of G1 with less compatibility with the rest of the Genesis generations.
It will be interesting to see how the new content layers onto and advances G9 as many times the capabilities of a new generation platform is not immedeately realized until that content becomes available.
But Zev0's pose converter is already bought. Perhaps yours is more straightforward and intuitive; it certainly seemed so when Jay used it.
at least there is a new Gen9 female swimsuit bundle. 4 more swimsuits for Gen9 female. with the two originally released there are now 6 Gen9 female swimsuits. no powerpose template officially released but there are swimsuits.
yah know I don't think I have ever rendered any swimsuit renders, of any kind ever. oh well, more waiting while the train goes by.
There is absolutely no point for me to buy any Genesis 9 characters. If you're good at post rendering to enhance your renders, Genesis 8 characters can look just as good as G9.
I was actually very surprised to see Joe Quick's excellent kid toons arrive so close to G9's debut, I don't think we've ever seen a toon show up that early in a cycle.
thanks for the information. I was going to ask if Genesis 9 can wear clothes that were made for Genesis 8.
This is about what happened to me. I didn't see much difference between version 7 and version 8. I saw no difference at all between version 8 and 8.1, except that some things stopped working. And I can't see any difference in version 9. All I've read is the eyes are better, and other things have been made incompatible for no reason. It seems like maybe they've hit some kind of plateau in which things can't get much better but they still want to release new, somewhat incompatible products to keep revenue coming in. With no noticeable improvements in the new products, I'm better off using all of the previously existing products I've collected for older versions.
I might be finally done with the DAZ store forever, for the second time. The first time, I eventually came back years later because I found out IRAY was introduced, and it made lighting much easier. Maybe I'll come back years from now when there's a new revolution on that level. Or maybe when Victoria 9 costs $10 USD. Maybe I'll just end up bored and having extra money at the same time, and spend it here. I don't know.
The point I was trying to make was that with a more advanced collision technology I wouldn't need to worry about toes poking through or any kind of poke-through. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have "Genesis X" sit on a bench and have the thighs spread out a little to simulate their weight on the hard surface? As for the spot-render - you are right, I don't use it enough but there is still the long wait for everything to load each time before the render starts.
I'm on the train , I'm just waiting for it to pull into a station and some nice G9's get on that I like and I hope they bring their luggage and some friends . :)
..still on the #3 and #8 bus here.
That's so sweet really, I kind of pictured it in my head :-)
Swimsuits are created by vendors, powerpose template is internal and being worked on to get the best possible version out for users :)
Yes I understand that and was not diggin' at the PA vendor, more that Gen9 basics are still unreleased yet and clothing that is released seems to be more of the same.
There's a reason why you'll find swimsuits, lingerie and simpler items hitting the store first - its not because Daz is insisting on releasing that kind of content - its because G9 is new and its the easiest and quickest kind of content to create and get through testing. More complicated outfits require more time and testing.
Have already seen body adjustment morphs, that allow a heavy set G9 on another site, plus many more.
Personally I like G1 the same as G9 but there are deep technology differences, though from the artistic point of view they're indeed very similar.
G1-G2 use the triax system for posing that's daz proprietary and can't be exported, unless a daz plugin is provided as for Poser. Use 3delight for rendering that's a "old" raytracer, though PBR extensions are provided in the shop.
G3-G8 use dual quaternion for posing that can be exported in most professional animation platforms. G8.1 adds FACS for standard face mocap. Adds dforce to simulate clothing. Use iray for rendering that's a pure PBR engine.
G9 is HD based, that personally I don't like as a design choice. That means that only PAs can do HD morphs so limiting non-PA users and 3rd party shops. It is also difficult to export HD morphs to professional animation platforms. Other than being heavy on the hardware. This is why personally I believe G9 is a step back from G3-G8, they did things worse. With G3-G8 you can have HD figures as well but it's optional, the base figure gets a detailed topology so you can bake to normal maps instead.
G9 is not 'HD based.'
I have an anthro character coming out that's not HD.
If anything it's easier to use without HD because of the higher base polygons.
