Interesting thread!
Got some nice ideas and interesting impressions out of it, thanks for that.
Anyway, figured I'd share my take on this as well... Genesis 9 really has become a bit of a love/hate for me. On one hand I really like the fact that they moved back to using one basic figure which we can then utilize in any way we want. Of course I am biased, years after the facts I'm still enjoy working with Genesis (1) every once in a while.
Yet I also don't fancy buying into a whole generation from scratch again either.
So in the end I'm planning on doing both... I'm not anxious to purchasing into 9 from scratch, so for that I'm sticking with 8 / 8.1 (and Genesis) for now. But at the same time I also looked into my options with regards to content creation and well... while I'm hardly a pro I am getting some interesting results with both ZBrush & Substance Painter (backed by Designer). There are several Substance materials which work really nicely with G9 and after having messed around for quite a few years in ZBrush (mostly for making morphs) I'm also getting the hang a bit with adding some physical changes that make up a whole character, though in full honesty that's wishful thinking on my part for now (one can hope ;)).
But I can definitely see the massive potential which G9 has for posing, it's really a step up so to speak.
So yah, maybe this is a good time to put my experiences with some of my toolset to good use.
I think if anything gets me onboard with G9, is if there is a version creature creator like what came with Genesis 3, so will wait and see what happens.
Yeah, Creature Creator would be great. I got a ton of mileage out of the one for Genesis 1.
..the real "litmus test" for me will be, can I recreate my Leela character without all the requisite resource and utility content I usually need. She's sort of my version of "Crysis" for Daz. May need to wait until Zev0 releases a new Skin Builder though as I need a fair freckled skin.
Other than the first day or two and the morph packs, not really thrilled with what's been coming out for G9 :(
i'm hoping its because many PAs are taking their time to produce some real quality products that reflect their skill and not just cashing in on the lack of content situation.
@MikeyFTL - Nice work! I'm in the same boat as far as the realism of G9 drawing me back in. That, along with the improvements to the LIE (which make it actually usable), has me...intrigued. lol
Well that is actually one of the things that is holding me back. If I look at the most realisitic figures available for G8/8.1 (Babina/Victoria8.1/Jacqueline8.1) those were Daz Core figures. We've seen a couple of PA G9 figures now, but they do not reach the same level of realism that V9 gives us. Until I see the same level of realism consistenly across the G9 field I see no point of upgrading as they wlll give me the same level of realism I can get with 8.1.
I strongly disagree on that, but it also depends on which characters you're talking about. I'd put, for example, Clara and Jada up against any G8 characters.
I disagree, I think the implementation/adaptation of G8.1 could've been better and is one of the reasons G8.1 was not that popular, now I fear the same for G9. There were a few PA's that did a great job on the G8.1 skin but I was mostly disapointed in what is saw. Same goes for the HD morphs at SubD lvl 5. As an illustration:
This is what I can get after just a bit of tweaking (minimal really) from G8.1 (items used can be found here):
This is what is offered now:
Both are Mousso characters, love Mousso. I feel a tweaked G8.1 has the edge over what is offered by PA's right now, so I don't see the point of upgrading to G9.
@BlueFingers - That's why I'm really pleased about the LIE being usable/faster now. The skin material that I used in this render is one of the G9 base materials. I just tweaked the material in photoshop before loading it on Vicky. Using the LIE, I can quickly make changes to the base material to get a completely different look (along with using my previous-version character morphs that I've converted to G9).
Still playing around, but I'm happy with it so far. I agree with you though - no point in mass buying new characters now if you're able to achieve those kind of beautiful results with 8.1!!!
I really love the facial realism of G9. It's simply amazing.
However, the price that realism is extracting in terms of computing power and product cost is starting to make me wonder if I can afford it.
G9 hair, so far, is wonderful. The monetary price is higher than the G8 equivalent, and the same is happening with characters and clothing. Props, generally I can make, but not clothes or characters. And I now rarely have a portrait image render in my 6Gb GTX1060 GPU, making the computing cost significant. It's worse than the days before I fitted the GPU due to the extra grunt needed for G9's extra detail. I now need close to 80 minutes for a portrait instead of the 55 I needed pre-GPU with G8.
So, the products cost more and I need a replacement for my moderately powerful (and still perfectly functional for everything else) Win7 PC. That's making G9 look a very, very, very expensive proposition. Not quite sure if I am going to stay with this train or get off and catch it again in a year or two. I was sort-of planning to upgrade the PC when DS5 came out. I really don't want to do it before then, because who knows what further features the PC will need then. If I can't keep with DS at that point, I may well end up with another 12 year sabbatical from DS and spend absolutely nothing on it during the time. Not sure that would be a desirable result for anyone.
Regards, Richard.
I like this one more.
Zale looks like an HD photo when rendered, an evil HD photo. Torian & Necromancer can be tweaked to look more real too.
Nevertheless, sure V9 is gorgeous, but G9 is expensive in comparsisson both in price and hardware taxation. PA's really would need to deliver for me on character/clothing quality to even consider adopting G9 in the long term.
And where the industry is currently at, and the speed of development in the industry I just wonder before how long G9 will be absolete and we have to go through this circus again. Just google/youtube :"photorealistic 3d character" and you'll see amazing examples close to a year old.
I just don't see the upside of adopting G9 now.
Yes, well... this one is a cute character and has perfectly symmetrical face and sharper details where as the other one is (arguably) more realistic and has slight imperfections (like slightly bent nose, the other eye staring straight ahead while the other eye is staring slightly inwards etc). Also the hair in the latter is smoother and wispier (and maybe clipping a bit at points) where as the first image has thicker and sharper strands giving it more voluminous appearance even if it is shorter.
If I had to choose one for realism I'd pick the latter but if I had to pick one based on "cuteness" alone I'd pick this one. YMMV.
Edit: Typo, poyt, ypot... no matter how you spell it, I still managed to do quite a few...
Alrighty, thanks. I was mostly curious because I read they may deny a product "if they are not considered high enough quality, or are of limited sales potential" and you yourself said "It'll sell for crap"
That being said, males probably get fewer products so I guess this is not as big risk as it is with females.
These two pictures are good examples of why genesis nine turned me off or one of the examples. Here is what I mean. Look at the top picture of Genesis 8.1 female it looks feminine, but when you look the bottom picture of Genesis 9 female shape it's looks unrealistically masculine. Not too be mean but that face on the bottom picture looks like a guys face.
You can dail any kind of morph in you want, there is a assymetry dail for 8.1, there are assymetrical 8.1 character morphs, you can use a better morph and better hair than I did in this render, all these points are not G9 exclusive or selling points for G9 in comparison too with G8.1.
I was commenting on preferences concerning those two specific images. They are quite different in their style, I feel. There are even other promo images for Peppa that (I think) are better in line with the G8 comparison picture. For me the one you posted was probably the one I liked least but it was also the one that most broke away from the flawless glamour model.
My only reason for getting anything G9 related is the unimesh. It means I can give my male character some of the cool stuff that is normally exclusive to female characters like the Dystopia Pompahawk without having to hop through extra hoops to fit it. I could see this also useful to give females some sensible gear that you usually see more on men (i.e.a plate armor without a boob plate and missing thigh protection).
I feel Peppa looks perfectly feminine (this in reference to whoever commented she has a male face):
Thanks, but no thanks. Having switched over to DS with G8 (after a lot of thought) and having since spent a small fortune in the process I'm not prepared to start throwing money at 'the latest thing' just because Daz have moved the goal posts again. When 8.1 appeared I actually hoped that Daz had realised that its customers represented more than a ready source of income and settled into a steady development process to an already top notch format. More fool me. I'm beginning to feel that I'd be wiser just burning a few dollars every day rather than throw it all away on something which will all stop as soon as the next (G10) latest thing arrives!
I skipped 8.1 entirely, because I know a stopgap when I see one.
So did I but only becuase I didn't know how compatible it was. In fact I just bought my first 8.1 character a few days ago (on sale, of course) and my compatibility fears have been somewhat allayed so I may buy more as they appear in clearance sales while G9 is being pushed.
...in the same boat here, 10+ year old W7 rig. G3, G8 are no trouble to work with and render as I can stay away from HD.and donl't have to deal with 8K textures.
It's weird, I feel I'm kinda putting one foot halfway on the train now, after saying for weeks that I'm not interested in G9 - and that's mainly because there're images of the character morphs people are achieving cropping up now, and they look absolutely stunning to me. Such diversity seems to be possible all of a sudden, even with just the basic morph packages! So, my resolution to stay clear (and not spend any money of G9, especially) is wobbling. But I'll restrain myself still and first go and check what I can do with all the G8 morphs I already have and the new Metamixer plus tool that I haven't tried yet - maybe there's equal morphological freedom achievable for G8 now, and I hadn't noticed yet. Soooooo - on the platform now at least, I guess ...
Edit: Weeeeell, the restrainin' didn't work out too well ... Seeing it's my last day of DAZ+ discounts today, and what with the V9 bundle being on offer again ... I managed to hold off until I saw that even the lovely ponytail hair from the Intro bundle goes down from just 30 to 51% off once it's in the cart - that was kind of the final straw, because it's really so, so pretty ... So, we'll see now. Hope I won't be disappointed.
...I'd like to see some fullly posed images, not just close up protraits
you can always convert your G8 character to G9, just that now the skin can't be transferred yet. The free eyes of G9 are indeed stunning enough, so if you mostly do portraits you might need G9. For expressions, if you own Genesis 3 & 8 Face Controls, your G8 and G3 characters can use FACS expressions like G9.
I bought the DO expressions, head shapes and body shapes, and I consider it far more than enough at this moment. Once my G8 skins can be used on G9 I don't see the need to splurge on G9 anymore.
