I love the upgrade. It's great that they don't have to be made invisible now.

I don't think I had a banner at any stage, yet I own all three ghost light products. Now $10+ in the cart. I supported this product iun the past, but that seems to have passed me by.

Daz gave me the discount which was very generous of them, as I hadn't seen anything about it at the time.

My problem is they don't seem to work in Daz Studio 40.20.2. They work fine in the Beta. I've changed the lumenance as well and nothing. Anyone else have this problem

    and hopefully a solution? Cheers

By updating the ghost lights to using W and setting the lums to ridicouls levels, you will kill your render quality. Test it and see.

What do you mean by "using W"?

  • I have this product, but I've been doing my own ghost lighting for years just using primitives with a emission setting and the cutout opacity of the primitive set to 0.00001. It always worked wonders. Now trying the workaround of jacking up the KCD luminance value to absurd levels I get emission, but significant firefly effects from the ghost primitive.

Why, oh why, did they fiddle with this!? It's impossible to light interior scenes effectively. I use spotlights a lot, but they have limitations. Ghost lights were such an elegant solution to the limitations of spotlights and now Daz ruined it.

The hack was based on a bug which is why one shouldn't base things on bugs; they get repaired sooner or later.  A few vendors have figured out workarounds that don't generate fireflys and there is a script around in the Free section that should help.

  • This seems to be working for me. My own ersatz ghost lighting is bust now with 4.20, but this works.

If you set the translucency down to 000001 and crank the Lums to offset it now after the BUG FIX. (And how were we suppose to know it was a BUG?)  Iray will waste too much processing on the over cranked light and will degrade the quality of your image. Simply try it once with a ghost light, and then again with a point light and see if it makes any difference.

Hm, i will have to try this. After upgrading to 4.20 i created a new scene with "self made" ghost lights with cranked up lumen. It looked fine, but i only looked at it in iray preview mode. I should probably do a proper render, and then compare it to a version using point lights. Will post the results here, but i'll probably be a while until i have time to do this.

No, the change was made by nVidia - as was the change to the behaviour of Thin Film.

By the same token, how was Daz meant to know it was a bug?

  • jestmartjestmart Posts: 4,449

Actually it was pretty obvious that it was a bug.

Well, it was kind of you to note that and make sure others were aware so that they were not taken by surprise when the bug was fixed.

Hm, this might be true. frown

First version: central area is illuminated by point and spot lights. Area outside the ring of pillars is illuminated with self-made ghost lights (Opacity 0.0000001, Luminance 1000000000 cd/cm^2)

Second version: All ghost lights are made normal emissives (Opacity 1, Luminance 200 cd/cm^2)

Both versions reached Max Samples of 15000. I think rendering time was roughly the same, I didn't really pay attention to that. Second version had reached higher convergence by the time it had reached Max Samples.

2nd version definitely looks less grainy, including in the central area, which in both versions is illuminated by normal lights.

    Rendered in 4.20.

You are welcome as I did point out that I had stopped using ghost lights as I suspected it was a bug several months before the update.

  • Just picked up on this thread. I own all three kits and cannot see the discount for kit 1 in my cart what's happening?

You will get a discount on the updated version of Ghost Light Kit 2, when it is released.

I have the original Ghost Lights set 1, but the discount isn't being applied on the new Iray Ghost Light Kit One. Richard or @KindredArts, can you please help me? Thanks!

Ditto... I didn't know this was a thing...  I cannot upgrade daz without this fixed.

Ditto. And shouldn't an update be made available for free to those who own the original product? Assistance, please?

Yikes! I would like to get in on the discount as well. I didn't realize we'd gotten to this stage.

  • I also have both of the original Iray ghost light sets (bought in 2017) and now they pretty much don't work.  I thought about getting the new ones, but same here, no discount.

So... should we ask the sales team?

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 102,243

Yes, if you open a ticket they can check the offer is working as intended, fix it if not, and give you an answer in any event.

  • maraichmaraich Posts: 494

So, I simply added the new version to my cart today, and it automatically showed up as $2 when I went to check out. It seems like it's automatic, so hopefully that helps some folks.
