I'll have to try the RSSY one again. I didn't have much success my first try.
EDIT: And if I still have no luck I'll see if I can squeeze in the ManFriday one, which wasn't out yet when I bought mine. But I have RSSY for Genesis 3 to Genesis 8, and that worked Great!
EM3D Padma HD for Genesis 9 finally got me to buy a G9. I love it when you see a figure and she says "Hello, I'm so-and-so, from your script."
I'm very happy now with G9, especially because of more realistic expressions which can be applied.
But the most I'm missing still are high heels for G9, just like this ones for G8:
https://www.daz3d.com/the-power-pump-for-genesis-8-females
or similar. As I already own many of cool high heels for G8 it would be great if there would be a converter script which would enable to use all of the G8 high heels also for G9. I'm not sure if there is an already working manual process to make them work, all I have found was with much of effort to use OBJ exports/imports, Joint Editor, Wheight map editor, etc....... but still didn't manage to make it work, as I'm not so deep in this techniques.
My problem with G9 has been the migration has been made harder than previous generations. All of a sudden, everything was "G9 only", whereas in the past, it was common during the transitional period to have products that work on both generations. Things have improved, and the Autofit has helped, but we still don't have an RSSY that would let me fit G9 to G8. If we did, I'd buy more of the "G9 only" things.
Depite this, I decided to try G9 the other day and discovered that all the basics were missing. Of course, I should have remembered how little you get for free (fair enough!) but to get all the basic morps and G9 versions of things I use in every picture would cost a lot, so I need a good reason to do it... and that's the thing. I don't have one.
I'm not looking at renders of G9 and thinking they look better than my G8.1 renders, and I think that's how I have to look at it. I don't think that investment would get me substantially better images.
Anyway, I stuck the things I'm missing on the wishlist, but I won't pay a lot for them because I'm really happy with G8.1.
I customise a lot, and there are things I think I'd find awkward too, especially no separate lip surface, and I guess I need to try it, but I can see it being hard to make morps in the areas where the mesh has been split. But I think I'd appreciate the higher base mesh density.
The gal on the left of the render is G9
There were a fair number of products for both, still are - I didn't count and compare with the 3/8 transition, but it certainly happened to a degree.
I tend to use G9 for several nonhumans (like Rawart and Oso3D characters) and G8 for the humans. I had trouble with joint corrections in the early days of G9. I believe those were due to a particular character or setting and have been dealt with since. But the ripple effect is still there; I am in the habit of loading G8 for regular people.
MMX Genesis 9 Clones for All lets us autofit Genesis 9 clothing to any Genesis generation
With the new update to DS, I'm going to give Genesis 9 another shot.
Victoria 9 being on sale while I have all of my punches, I couldn't Not get her. We'll see how it goes.
Even if it doesn't, Victoria is one of those bases that seems to put magic into their generation.
Through TeamViewer, I'm helping a pal learn Daz Studio for his D&D portraits. He wants to stick with Genesis 9.
I helped him pick out some base figures that match the description and somewhat resemble the images he got using AI.
I have to say, Genesis 9 is one beautiful piece of work!
In wanting to give it another try, I'm relieved to see that I've been collecting deals items for the generation all this time. I didn't quite realize how many support assets I've collected for it so far. At first it was hard to find even the smallest discounts for anything G9, now there are deals all over the place.
It'll still be a while - aside from perhaps a little dabble here and there. I'm right in the middle of other things. But at least I'm wrapping my head around it.
Something that I've noticed while helping someone else with this - I have the habit of collecting All sorts of stuff - not just the particulars that I'm aiming for. This has an Amazing consequence when designing a special character - like a trademark actor. I use dials from all manner of figures to get the right head and face, while the body is another story altogether, which I'll blend many more to get what I want - using the Essential Shapes dials to fine tune. Trying to help someone who doesn't share those habits gives me a huge appreciation for the fact that I do. It's so nice to be able to blend custom sculpts like that.
Just food for thought.
I wonder why some people appear to have trouble loading their content? My content has always loaded quickly. In the past I had troubles working with some scenes that had higher quality detail.
But those troubles went away when I got a new computer with 32GB RAM, and a decent nVidia card.
G9 Core Figure skin (specifically, Victoria, Michael, Angela, Lawrence, Freja, & Snow Queen---others too) looks like skin. I can almost approach the look with G8.1, but closeups reveal G9's indisputable superiority---for skin. As @alken said, however, the morphs for G9 don't yet allow me to make the characters look uniquely distinctive. Add to that my G8-induced fear of morph bloat, G9 Core Figure morph sameness, and less character morphs I can use from bluejaunte.
I converted my two main G8.1 female character morphs to G9, but they lost their X factor. So, I used Cayman's Genesis 9 UVs on my G8.1s. Now I have G8.1's vast morph options with G9's superior skin and eyes. The best of both worlds.
I've never been able to get the RSSY one to work properly...all the converted characters end up ultra-wonky, even just base characters. The ManFriday one works for me, though. I've also had some luck moving morphs myself, if I want to move simple stuff like soft-body collision morphs that come with clothing, etc.
I love G9 for face sculpting and facial expressions.
But...
I'm not a fan of G9 for the lack of male content...
And...
For the fact that G9 comes pre-loaded with boobs, and even many of the male figures still have boobs...and sometimes it can be difficult to get rid of the boobs...
Lastly...
Clothing fitment from G8 to G9, particularly with males...isn't so hot. I've found that after auto-fitting or using an auto-converter tool (like RSSY), I need to manually fit the clothing and create fitment morphs myself. It's always the chest/shoulder area that is the problem.
...true but the RSSY clothing converters smooth out "rough spots". I notice using a converter clothing tends fit and pose much better than just relying on autofit.
..I've fund that as well. I picked up the G8 to G3 cpcharater converter whne I sill was jsut working wth G3 and it was a bit stange.
For converting G3 to G8 I found that Zev0's XTransfer works better. I can also transfer G2 characters that were converted for G3 with GenX2 to G8. A very useful utility.
For example this character uses the head shape of 3DU's Tamra character for G3F
Thanks! That's what I meant by the Autofit. I couldn't remember the name!
If you missed the commercial topic about it, it's in the pipeline and should be available soon, according to @RiverSoftArt:
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/665041/coming-soon-rssy-clothing-converter-from-genesis-9-to-genesis-8-commercial
Thanks for all the info folks! I may get a different convertor, but only if I can get successful tests in animation/simulation without breaking my PC.
If I can get it, however, I'd love to get a good Sol and Ensley conversion over to 9. Others as well.
Yeah, that MMX Genesis 9 Clones for All works well for me. I have Fit Control for all Genesis except 9 so far, and I like to tweak anyway, so just a good basic auto-fit usually takes me where I need to go.
I feel badly I didn't get a chance to help you out in time... The Shapes bundle was on sale the other day for 60% off and with added discounts, I got it for like, $16. Keep your eyes open for a sale! It will be worth it!
*hint:: Also, the smoothing modifier works wonders on clothing that doesn't Autofit perfectly!
Yes, and in worst case additionally the push modifier with 0.1 or a little more strength is a useful tool against poke throughs.
and i dont really see that much of improvement on skin. the eyes are weird..looks like they have cataracts on the lower half. expressions not very good. morphs seem weak.
...still getting a lot out of G3 and G8. I'm content.
I wasn't around to falll in love or invest much in Genesis 8, so my experience of all the Generaions of Genesis from 2 onward were simultaneous. My favorites have been Genesis 9...and Genesis 2, actually. (Genesis 2 is more awesome than people talk about). And honestly, I feel like the morphs and shapes I have for Genesis 9 "do more" than what exists for most of the other figures. I have about 3 or 4 complete shape and morph collections for Genesis 8, male and female - and STILL struggle to get details or the "look" I want to see. And it takes what seems like forever.
What I like abut Genesis 9 is the way the face has more nuance and idk how to explain it... It seems less cartoony and "smooth". (Though that's the exact reason I love Genesis 2) Genesis 9 characters just look more like real people to me. I have seen some Genesis 9 art that I have had to *really really* scrutinize to tell it from a photo of a real person. That's impressive to me. And while I do have a few issues with 9 "out fo the box" (like short shins) all of them are easily addressed once I got a few character morphs and shapes and begin creating my own characters...which feels REALLY easy by comparison to Genesis 8 (even with all the morph packs).
I've heard people say stuff about the eyes, but from my playing around, I think it might just be a need for "better" ( I know that word is subjective) textures.
Here is an example of a character I've been developing with Genesis 9. It's a fantasy "non real" character, and even though it is incomplete and kinda "rough" there's STILL something about it that looks more "real" to me than the other figures I have in my collection to work with... even though it's not a "real life" character. Idk... (btw, she's made mostly from Thornworks "Nala" , for anyone curious)
No... Your experience of Genesis 9 without any characters or shapes, is going to seem as robust as however many years collection you have invested in your Generation 8 figure feels... But, I really think that it is WAY better than previous figures were without those things and actually with only a minimal few added, is actually much much better...
And you know, I get why people are attatched to their current favorite figures, but I will never understand why some feel the need to discourage others from liking sometihng else. Why throw "yuck" on someone else's "yum'? It's also interesting to me that the people most adamant about NOT liking it are the one's saying they're not interested to try it at all. (shrug) I'm liking it very much.
Genesis 9 mesh is more suitable for 3d sculptors. If you like to sculpt at high resolutions than G9 is much better than G8, also G8 eyes was terrible! I can't understand how someone can say they were better! If you like realism G9, if you like dolls G8.
Since I don't really go for realism, I don't have a problem with any of the generations. Only thing I look for is being able to share clothes, hair, footwear and poses. So far I have yet so see a proper belly roll on any model, of course, to get that particular action I have to invest in muscle morphs or create my own. My biggest complaint is with animation. No matter what generation you use, they all look stiff.
well I must say G9 is definately the best option for sculpting stuff myself due to the higher polycount
not that I sculpt well
nothing to show as embarrasing but one can add weird bulges and stuff for alien monsters easily
...as I've mentioned my primary reason is economic as I tend purchase a large amount of resource content like standalone morphs skin, shapin, and such rather than premade characters.. Characters that I do purchase need to have unique features and/or shapes that I combine with others to create more "personalised" custom characters. Also the newer content is more expensive while there is still a lot of G8 content available which often goes on sale.(some even getting the "legacy" tag).
Photorealism is not my #1 goal as I am more into illustration work and graphic novels (I still use Aiko 3 for example). I often mix aspects of G2, G3, and G8 together through plugins that are either no longer available or are not updated for G9 (I imagine the return to the single unimesh may be a factor in this). The change to the base UV map (which actually occurred with 8.1) is another matter as well as I can use G3 skins on G8..
The bottom line here is, moving to G9 doesn't offer much more than I already can do with what I have invested in. This is not to say it is "bad" and that people should avoid it it's just a matter of personal taste, need, and workflow. If I were a newcomer to DazI likely would have picked up on G9 as it would make sense to start by investing in the newest figure available. When I first got into this 16 years ago, I started with V4.2 right out of the gate, pretty much bypassing Gen3 (other than Aiko 3 [who came in a freebie starter bundle[, I sometimes used David as he was a built bit more like a "normal" person you see on the street everyday).
See, that's the exact reason I think I will end up falling in love with G9. Those "premade characters" can be dialed in at small (or not so small) amounts to give you a great starting point or to mix with other shapes, male or female, young or old to help create that something unique in a way that G2-G8 simply can not.
And really on the economic thing? Because ( I don't know if this was just a holiday thing or not) but I found G9 items cheaper than most G8 items. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Most of the G8 stuff I like has been full price, no sale and more expensive than the "new release" price of the new G9 stuff I got.
But... for anyone wanting to get a few starter freebies, here's some (still) FREE stuff I got:

If there's anything free for male characters, I haven't found it.
I get all that for sure! I still love Aiko 3 myself! I don't have any issue wth people who have love for another figure and/or generation at all. I plan to use all of them! LOL I just don't understand why some people like to come into the forum and tell people this or that sucks and they don't even want to try it if anyone mentions liking the thing at all. Do they not see how mean that is? I mean.... even if they really DO thini it sucks, it (whatever it is, new figure, character, prop set) was still created by a human person who has feelings! geesh! (...just saying)
Not implying you said anything like that, KK.... all my thoughts just got caught in my response to you. (lol)
I don't know how to sculpt.... but it sounds like fun! LOL
