I've given it a bit of a go, bought a one or two characters, picked up free items, but to be honest I struggle to 'like' any of the characters I make with G9 compared to what I can do with G8 or G8.1, and even G3 to be perfectly honest.
So i'm stepping back off the train and return to the old carriage
Genesis 9 is a wasted chance for a better base figure.
I've been working on my G8F for years giving her custom JCM to make evry limb pose as realistic as possible.
The problem still remains, that one JCM fixing a problem on one pose, giving another problem on another pose.
I had high hopes on G9 having a better topology, better rigging, and improving and fixing flaws.
Instead G9 became DAZ's biggest disapointment.
Worst ideas of G9:
Unisex base figure.
Mesh topology leads to render artefact on joint bendings.
Separate Eyes and mouth figure.
UV layout.
The more I dig into G9, the less I like her.
Skipping G9 and waiting hopefully for G 10.
maybe there will be a G9.1 I xould see that happening, correctig some of the flaws with 9.
Which flaws? If you are one of those who dislikes the basic topology, or having a common base, then those are not things that could be fixed with a dot release.
Genesis 9.1 adding back the material zones 9 ditched would be a huge step in the right direction.
I got on the train but am getting off. G9 is just too difficult to work with. The new material zones and makeup issues are driving me crazy and stifling me creatively when I have to use pre-made makeups rather than easily customize my own. Yes, I can go into Photoshop and make my own makeups but that's extra time spent. The lack of an ability to easily add lip gloss, play with iris colors and more is driving me crazy and I'm wasting a lot of time trying to do things that are simple with G8 with no perceived improvement with renders. In fact G9 characters look a lot worse to me than G8 and even G3. I wish I had not invested anything in G9. I think I'm done with it unless there are some MAJOR improvements. The only advantage is the loading time.
I tried G9 a bit around the time Josie9 was released because I got a really good deal for those bundles and the rest of the essential G9 stuff, also zev0's shape shift. I only messed around a bit with it creating one character and the only thing I can say is that it felt good and I did like the result I got quite a bit. Still, I wasn't going to switch at that time because G9 still lacked some things I needed in my normal workflow. At this point I think the only thing I still really want is zev0's 200+ head morphs for G9 and maybe RSSY G8 to G9 hair converter (if it's even needed, not sure). I'm feeling like it's about time I start using it as my default so I have less characters to convert later, so I think I'm getting fully on the train. We'll see if I start seeing the issues people keep talking about when I start using it more, which so far, the lip material separation is the only thing I can think could be annoying but still wouldn't go as far as saying it's a deal breaker.
I have almost everything I need to work with G9, lots of morphs, nails, makeup options that "easily" work around the lack of a lip material zone, heels, clothing, 3rd party nipples, bellybutton and private parts, a way to convert skins from G8 over. The only thing I really need that will save me time is a hair converter since parenting does take a bit of time to get it right and there are not many hairs that I like for G9 yet.
I am no longer purchasing anything for G8 or 8.1 if I can help it, but I still use both of those figures depending on what I need for a scene but I try to use G9 as my primary choice now when I can.
Could you point me to the make up solutions you mentioned?
But do you see the problem.
"I had to buy this, this, this and this to rectify an issue I didn't have with the previous generation!" is not a viable solution for everyone.
They are the same kinds of products people bought to make things easier for G8. 80% of the products in the stores are made for things you can do yourself in DS. I am not trying to get people to get on the G9 bandwagon, just voicing that not everyone has the same view that G9 is harder to work with or not worth trying out, especially for new users that don't know any better or PAs that are trying to make money off G9.
This. Exactly this. If anything I'll probably end buying less clutter for G9 since I'm way more experienced now.
I have to say though, one thing that kinda makes me wonder if I should jump on the train is that I see a lot of PAs still making G8/G8.1 stuff only, some made some G9 stuff and now are making G8/G8.1 stuff again and some are now just making stuff for everything. Which makes me wonder how well is G9 doing. I don't *think* Daz would abandon G9 if it doesn't seem like it's panning out as they hoped, but I also wouldn't bet something important on it
Making one buy two or three G9 bundles before letting the client get extra 10-30% off of older G8 items, says something. As does bringing the tokens back.
I think it's still selling better than horse3 judging by the recent discounts
Six and a half months into G9, and Raiya & Crocodile Liu have released one G9 character each. Can weekly Core Figure releases make up for the shortfall of new G9 characters when longtime mainstay character PAs have slashed their output?
And P3D released a G8.1 character today after releasing some G9 characters before.
Choosing one or the other isn't ideal for PAs right now; the only way to maximize sales is to make both 8 and 9 versions. While a significant part of customers will stick with 8, a significant also probably moved exclusively to g9 by now. So going back to 8 won't brig back the sales pre G9. I personally hope to see as many 8 items as possible, but it is what it is.
That's to HID3D, I now have a decent base to use with the G9 items I really like, so I no longer feel bad about getting them, and I can get any future releases I really like.... which kind of puts G9 somewhere behind G2 at this point for me. And I doubt it'll ever move from there.
I am mostly disappointed with G9 clothing. One argument for the unisex base is that it allows creators to create for all genders in one go (paraphrased), but I gaven't noticed an increase in male clothing.
Most PA's didn't get V9 before she got released.
So nearly everybody had to wait till release to even make a morph for her.
Maybe I'm missing something, but to me, the fact G9 is not backward compatible without spending more money is a drawback. I'm pretty much done buying the same type of clothing for every character. So now, if there is a G2 item on sale for real cheap, I'll buy it and use it all the way up to G8. There were a couple G2 clothing items set free not long ago and they work great on 8, might even work on 9. I've tried 9 clothing backwards to 8 and they do not work. Maybe with a lot of messing, but I'm not into messing around, I just move on to something different,
I tried it and I can't continue with it at the moment. I do animation and I decided to use toon heroes for the lead character in this film I'm doing for a client and I can't use FaceMotion with it. Though I can totally hand key the facial movements and lip sync, the amount of time I have until the deadline is proving to not be in my favor after I already finished a few shots. I had brought him into Blender to use since the FaceCap files works there through diffeo, but Iray is so much faster than Cycles, so I had to jump back into Daz to have a chance at this deadline. So I created a new lead from G8 so I can use FaceMotion and get the films done quicker. I have to get two of these done before September, so I just don't have time to handkey everything. I tried making a G8 version of it thanks to Jay's tutorial the other day, which I got so excited for a moment because the character transfered over, but toon heroes' eyes came out super wonky on G8. So maybe regular characters are fine, but the client wants toon style. So I know for the next five months, there is zero use for G9 for me. I'll see in the fall if I want to start picking things up.
I like G9, although I admittedly only got into Daz around the time G9 dropped. That also meant I was starting from a zero library on all generations. I see no difference to the buy-ins/add-one you need for G9 vs G8. If anything, the unisex character means I have to buy less gender-specific morph packs. There's a trade off there in that I've bought a few gender-specific fixes that, reading through the comments here, I wouldn't have needed to do with for the separate G8 bases. Not sure I agree with that as, comparing G8 and G9 side-by-side on those specific parts, I'm underwhelmed by what I see on G8 and would've bought the add-ons anyway had I started with it. I struggle to see any material difference between the two figures if I'm honest, so I'll happily go for the more dense mesh.
What I have noticed, however, is that the quality range between what's available for G8 vs G9 is wider. The best products for G9 are a step above the best products for G8, but on the flip side, poorer quality products have less space to hide on G9. I think you can see the quality gap widening on every generation. I take from this that as the density of a mesh increases, the pool of artists able to produce higher quality work reduces and the skill needed to work on a newer generation can expose the inexperience of newer artists. That's not G9's fault and we shouldn't shy away from advancing the generations because of it.
Even saying that, the size of my G8 library blows the size of my G9 library away, and there are absolutely many brilliant G8 products. If I don't have a comparable option for G9, I will use those G8 products on G9 instead (skins, outfits, hairs etc.) And while G9 cranked up renders better than G8, I can still use G8 for actors or shots of characters that don't require the extra fidelity G9 brings.
I've had a play about with G3 recently. I find it amazing for stylised 3D characters and don't see why I'd use a later generation when doing work of that specific type. If I want to go down the realism route, G9. If I want a more traditional comic style, G8 seems to fill that hole. Could do that on G9 too, just don't need to. When G10 comes out, I suspect G9 will be the generation that's dropped from what I currently use, but that doesn't mean G9 is a failure here and now.
I know that forums don't represent the majority of users but a lot of the g9 core character threads are a mix of luke warm receptions and what the character should be and less about the character renders. Though a lot of the later g8/8.1 threads were walls of text with very little renders too but it seems like the more dedicated users aren't as happy for g9 as was expected. Daz will keep pushing the g9 cores out but when the hard core users don't seem to be rendering them I wonder if they'll slow down and go to a quality vs quanitity approach at some point.
This has been a general trend over the past few years on the forum. A few years ago, most new character threads were filled with people experimenting and trying things and being excited.
I really miss that.
I wonder how many new people will get into rendering these days, and will stick to it? If I had to decide today whether to learn Daz3d and constantly buy new content vs learning to generate pictures using AI, I'm not sure.
My assumption: most of the persons using Daz3d as a hobby and have spent $$$ will stick to it, but rather buy content for and stick to G3/G8/G8.1.
If history repeats itself as with every generation since V4/M4 then yes. The more content that gets released the better the generation becomes because of the sheer number of alterations morphs you can apply to the figure to fix the areas lacking in its base. Every generation has had practically the same critique and by the end, it's become one of the favorites.
This right here!
What do you mean? Genssi 9 has AutoFit clones for all previous Genesis geenrations, so its backward compatibility is better. The morph transfer options are about the same (using Transfer Utility), and there are free pose converters. Textures are the trickiest, and would require some work in an external application, but that has been true with other generational jumps too.
Oso3D,
When I started a few years back, I got on the Daz+ program and quickly waded into the Daz Plus Members Only forum. That spirit of show-and-tell you mention, in which people share their renders and experiments, is alive and well there. (Jack Tomalin runs a lively inspiration contest and render challenge every month.) I don't think my enthusiasm would have survived had I dipped my toes in this here Commons first.
Cheers!
