    Aladdin

Little known fact: the original story of Aladdin took place in China. The genie in the lamp was actually the second genie; the one that helped Aladdin escape from the cave came from a magic ring.

    Very nice!

I am trying to add vdb smoke but I'm not sure if I need to add just the last frame, the first frame, a random one in between, or all of the frames to get the smoke? Are adding vdb files to the volumetric shader in DS additive or replacing?

I don't want the smoke animation, just a "photo" of the smoke at one second in time.

Does anyone know how to completely fill up a shape with smoke? I can only ever seem to get part of a shape filled.

It's going to depend on which frame of the smoke you want. I'd expect most VDB sequences to start basically empty, so you'd want to go closer to the end. You can keep Iray preview active so you can test out different VDBs in the sequence. It may also depend on which fields are the closest to what you want, so to the extent possible, you'll want to know which fields the VDB sequence has.

You'll get exactly as much smoke as the VDB provides, so your options are to create a VDB yourself within the size and shape of your container, or make sure "Clip to geometry" is off and the VDB sits correctly within the shape.

  • I can't get clip to geometry button to work for me. The explosion vdb remains contained in the box whether the button is on or off.

The surface name of the container has to be Volume in order for the clip geometry button to work. That is discussed earlier in the thread.

OK, I chose the last frame. It's also the largest in disk space usage but when I render it, it's invisible. I chose a DAZ Primitive cylinder to assign the volumetrics shader * vdb file too but maybe the cylinder needs to be made much larger. I applied a clear glass shader to the cylinder beforehand so so maybe that's the problem.

    Thanks.

I can't find anything called "default resources".  All my product library is showing is 3 generations of Genesis and dForce Starter Essentials, several bridge packs, and subsurface shader base. Nothing was showing DIM except the Beta Build itself.  I set the beta installation to point back to my regular content runtime folders, so there's also no "custom" beta content folder.  However, I did just notice a download file called PublicBetaContent1DS. Is that what I'm looking for?

You should see this in DIM

Aha!  I found it.  Thanks for your help.

  • Feel like a dunce. I'm dyslexic, I misspelled Volume, would you believe. Seems to be working now. Can someone show what the color setting are on the Fire Bunny further up in the thread?

Help, please, if you know what's wrong here. I still can't get the free smoke from the previously linked site, to render in DAZ Studio. See attached. Thanks.

At first glance I can say two things: The density multiplier is way too low, and volumetric effects only work in Iray.

Daz uploaded a video tutorial in their official channel in youtube that may come in handy to you.

OK, thanks. I will raise the density multiplier. The render is actually in iRay but my viewport is only Filament as I have no nVidia RTX card. I will watch that video too.

  • Here's a quick 'HOW TO' for VDB's....I'm using KindredArts Iray Storm 2, as it has a very nice Volumetrics box (saves hours of trying to rename things, & getting it wrong). You'll find 'Iray Storm 2' in Props, turn on Iray first or you'll see nothing at all, bar the 'box'. In the Surfaces Tab, click on 'Browse' in the Volume File window, This will take you where Daz thinks you should have put the VDB Files, go to where you put them, click on one, & hey presto, a cloud will appear, depending on where it's from is how much you'll need to play with the 'Density Multiplier'. To Colour your cloud, use the 'Scattering Multiplier', anything from white to black will give you pale to very dark clouds, if you use a colour like green you'll get a green cloud, if you then add a red to the 'Absorption Multiplier' you'll get the effect in the 5th image, the 6th image has one of the 'Rolling Fog's' from 'Iray Storm 2'.

    Cool tips! Thanks for sharing.

  • I use with success volumetrics for my next shop asset but i've a question. This feature could be used to generate dust atmosphère in godray ? I've never been satisfied by old technic shaders. I've done some primitive test but i don't find the good settings to turn volumetrics into particules.
