I was kindly referenced, and just want to say my big issue right now is trying to pick ONE thing to work on with VDB.

Many many ideas and cool results.

I've managed to export a frame of smoke sim from Houdini and import it into Daz, but it only shows in the viewport and not the render window.  Any ideas?

    Where'd you find that?

Maybe VDB volume is big, you'll have to rename surface to "Volume" by using Geometry Editor and set Clip to Geometry Off.

I've already done that. It's strange. I have the volume and a cylinder in the volume. It renders in the viewport fine, but only the cylinder renders when I hit the render button. Render engine is definitely set to iray!

Hi, Is there a feedback about performance of vdb files vs "billboard" fog/volumetrics ? Thanks in advance

Billboards will always render faster than 3d geometry.

That's pretty incredible. I do wonder how you got it so well mixed though. Care to share? My experiments with volumes (and lighting them) usually makes the whole cloud turn the same colour. Did you combine two separate volumes with different absorbptions, or is there some other neat trick to it?

I'm really excited for this.  There's no doubt that it will add to render time.  From my own experience, when I've used volumetrics in Blender, my render time took longer (it took more passes to get the image less noisy).  I'd expect the same with Daz.

Me, too.  And that's what sleep is for.  Let the computer render while I'm doing something else.

I put an emissive sphere in the center and turned the visibility WAY down and turned the lumens WAY up ;)

    Love this.

  • I'm quite satisfied how my experiment came out.

I used different assets from KA Rocket Launch VDB scaled down to match the turbines of the robot.

I made one complete render and two more partials playing around with flame brightness and smoke thickness. These three versions were combined afterwards.

For all the assets used see in the gallery.

Very Cool, @barbult - you're making me want to DL the latest version and have a play with the volumetrics!

    Aladdin

Little known fact: the original story of Aladdin took place in China. The genie in the lamp was actually the second genie; the one that helped Aladdin escape from the cave came from a magic ring.

    Great scene too. smiley

Has anyone figured out a good way to render flames? I've tried rendering multiple volume fields each in its own primitive, but DS and/or Iray doesn't seem to like that. There are no emissive options available in the volumetric shader, either.

Hope its ok to post this here and that this is the right place.

I tried using the gel lighting technique with the explosion vdb file from OpenVDB and this is the result, quite like it myself
    Bat Signal anyone?

That means you didn't install the update "default resources".

All the updates should have shown in DIM.

The dafult plugins were also updated

    Install all the upgraded parts.

    Start Studio.

Then run the script from the main menu bar "Window>Workspace>Update and Merge Menus"

    Now restart Studio.

Im having same problem and I have installed the default resources for DAZ 4.20 but still cannot find the 'simple openvdb mdl volume shader' in content library or in the surfaces tab.

    The volume shader is in:

    Shaders > Iray > Effect

or in the content library at:

Shader Presets > Iray > Daz Volume

For reference, the VDB shader is included in Default Resources for DAZ Studio 4.20+ and is located in \Shader Presets\Iray\Daz Volume\

I'm not seeing this on my list of files under the beta in my library and it doesn't show up in DIM.

Have you updated your default resources?
