That calf does look good! (Better than the Minecraft car on my thread, LOL. I still can't get over how boxy that thing is.)  The calf has good expression in his eyes.

The calf is adorable. I wish it had different eyecolors.. I wanted to do a calf on the saddle cowboy pose.... There are so many cool images on the net with cowboys rescuing the calves....  but I have a confession.... I hate Daz Horse 2!  The horse doesn't look good to me. It looks really fake... ITs mane...It's tail...It just doens't look real....There is something about it...

Just testing out some of my recent content.

For those interested in military stuff, the new Predatron dog attack suit has a great set of overalls underneath. You can recolor them nicely with shaders to get rid of the quilted look. The t-shirt is also quite nice, but it loads with the coveralls as one piece.

The coat might work as a winter coat with the right shaders. When it loads it turns the lower arms off.

Here is Owen wearing the Dog Attack coveralls colored Army green.

You mentioned looking for a coiled rope. There is one in the Terradome 3 Canal Country props. I added it to the saddle render. It needed adjusting scale wise to get it to fit in the hand though.

The coat on Daz horse two doesn't come with a bump map, which doesn't help (but is easy enough to fix). Mane has too much of a 'bridle path', but the tail can work. It's the eyes that bug me most with the model - but that goes for other animals, too. Perhaps because they don't have actual eyeballs. I still use it though. Along with the horse from Somewhere Else.

On the bright side, we at least do have a horse. And other animals. Most over at Daz seems to focus on (*cough*female*cough*) humanoids.

    I agree.

Horses aren’t always pretty smooth slick things. Many working horses are more rugged with uneven coats u-necks, jutting features and different sizes. I can make them bigger and smaller but less perfect and realistic is hard. Plus the lack of tack really kills it. You can’t do a realistic image without a ton of postwork.

Horses are amazing beasts and I think these products not having functionality to make them usable or even so you can lead your horse around is a stunning lack of concern for how the product can be used by the consumer.

It has been suggested and I agree that I may want to change the name of my thread. We are winding down to the end of this thread and I was going to wait for thread 2.... but any suggestions would be appreciated...

I like that. The lasso really ads something.

How about since you have been doing a lot of changes of time and trade in your pose sets something like "SereneNight's Time Trapeze" or "SereneNight's Trades in Time". Trade is an old word that used to mean profession or shopping (people would bargain their profession work for other professional work or for goods and likewise goods would be used to bargain for other goods or for professional work) but trade isn't use frequently with those meanings anymore. My aunts, uncles & grandparents, one of my aunts in particular, would still try and bargain for better deals, even in modern chain stores. They weren't being cute, loud, or rude but they wanted better deals and would say so. They used to crack me up. I've always paid what was on the price tag if I wanted it & could afford it so visiting and watching them was a trip!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm keeping these ideas, and will ponder this. It is a weighty matter you see!

In another thread the subject of police bikes came up. They had one at Rendo, so I decided to check it out. Not bad. I'm going to have to work on tweaking extures a bit more....I need to find a good red plastic siren emissive glass for the little red flashing light. I think SF-Design did some emissive glass wonder if it would work there.

there is also a mess of chrome on the side, which isn't all that great so maybe something less dramatic to downplay it there....

Cool... It was thought maybe I do not post enought sci-fi to call it sci-fi. Although technically Owen and Boyd live in the future. They just get portrayed in a contemporary setting because I don't have enough propes... =-)

With this I wanted to actually use that lightning bug prop that I bought a while back form antfarm. Unfortunately, they didn't show very well with the busy background and looked like just black bugs, which they are, but I wanted moar drama. So I used ron's firefly brushes to spice things up a bit.

These are the new beast character. I think they make interesting aliens.

Owen prefers to talk stuff out if he can. In a surprising role reversal Boyd is not happy with the aliens. Especially the one who just tapped Owen's chest.

The shadows from the trees on Owen's face are a distraction. If I did it again, I'd move that branch or whatever it is. A little shadow is good. That looks almost like dirt.

Having saddled many a horse and taught many how do do so, I'll say that a Western saddle usually looks pretty awkward however you carry it.

Owen has a thing for Cowboys. So, I used him to test out the pose with the calf. I'm quite impressed with the little Noggins calf. Quite nice given its age.

I think that's my new favorite of yours.

That is really great. And having lived many years on my grandfather's dairy, I can say that calf really looks great!   And just how is that black coat on the calf looking better than any of the black options on the dog 8???

Did you do some sci-fi magic?

Yes, it's be nice if you shared the shader presets for that calf or was it that the material maps are really good?

https://www.daz3d.com/noggins-cattle-breeds is the texture expansion to go with the noggins calf and bull. Not sure why its not cow and bull, but hey I don't make the rules. laughhttps://www.daz3d.com/noggin-s-bull-and-calf

The calf's body needs to be altered slightly. Longer legs (20 percent), makes it look less like a shrunken down cow and more calf-like. I also made it smaller.

The textures are quite good, and it responds well to bright light. All I did was add iray uber to the whole calf and then added some liquid shading to its eyes. All else is Noggins great texture and some good lights.

The tail is easy pose, so this tells me that Mr. Noggins is a pro. So few artists even bother with those details, but Noggins calf has an easy pose and whispy tail.

I don't own the cow, yet, maybe it will go on sale.

Okay so here, we have the cowboy rescuing the little calf and giving it a ride back to the ranch. And yes, I managed to get the feet in the stirrups of the western saddle. I had to use the morph to remove the saddle horn and lower the cantle.  No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the cow to fit on the cowboy's lap and leave the horn in place. The calf however is grateful for the removal of the saddle horn.

One thing that I wish the calf could have is some eyelashes. Every cow I know has excellent and endearing lashes.

Here's a cowboy pose from my upcoming freebie set. This is the pose with the calf.

I realize now that I need the Horse 2 pro bundle. I want those extra breeds. I wish DAZ offered the option to 'complete' a pro bundle since I only have 4 items I don't own from it... Mostly the medieval armor. But you need Horse Pro 2 to run the Iray textures for some reason. I hope it goes on sale soon... I have a hankering to get the mustang from that set, for obvious reasons... Also would like the iray texture expansion...

Today was my lucky day! Thanks Daz I was able to buy horse2 pro, the Iray add-one and noggins  cows and chickens. The horse 2 pro bundle was 66 percent off. Now I have enough to make moar cowboys.

Oddly the horse 2 pro bundle was more expensive just a few hours ago.

I found this https://ladyfyre-graphics.com/product-category/poser-and-daz-studio-content/.  Has a free replacement mane and tale for horse 2. I’m going to check it out,

I'm confused about the difference between https://www.daz3d.com/idg-iray-essentials-daz-horse-2-and-centaur-7 and https://www.daz3d.com/da-horse-2-iray-material-presets. Are they both needed or are they competing products with overlapping functionality? Do you know?

  • Serene NightSerene Night Posts: 17,647

They look like competing products. The design anvil product did not come up for a potential add on like the idg product did. I didn’t even know it existed.... the store only told me about the first one. The idg product also requires the pro bundle. The design anvil product does not.

i will test the one I bought....the idg bundle later today and give you my opinion.
