mann i'm really sick of the john and yoko christmas song.

not feeling christmassy, and it's only 21 days away. wouldn't mind some new year's champagne :) i like the frexeinet.

...riding home last night I couldn't believe how many people already have their holiday displays up. Yesterday was only the 2nd.

Speaking of holiday tunes, was talking with a friend yesterday about holiday travel and last she mentioned one time she was stuck on a plane that was forced to wait on the tarmac for a while sitting in the middle seat between two fairly hefty fellows one of whom was stuffing a goopy sandwich into his pie hole. To make her experience even more unbearable, on the plane's main vidsceen, they kept looping one of the Mannheim Steamroller holiday songs alternating with Michael Bolton singing White Christmas over, and over, and over.

...and people wonder why I don't like to fly during the holidays.

    ...complaint:

Headhunters. Yeah, you know those agencies like Monster or Beyond who you sign on with and submit your resume/profile to in order to assist with your job/career search. I love it when I keep getting referrals "based on the qualifications on your resume and/or in your profile" for jobs like:

...Truck Driver: my profile mentions I do not have a drivers' licence and this occupation has nothing to do with the experience listed on my resume.
...Sales/Sales Management: Not a sales person, don't have anything on the resume or in my profile that would indicate so.
...LPN/Medial Assistant: I have no mention on my resume of certification or a degree.
    ...Systems Administrator: Same as above.
...Administrative Assistant (high grade like V or VI): Usually requiring a degree, expert level experience with software like Power Point or Acrobat Professional (never used either, not listed on my resume), and extensive HR experience.
...Clerk - Military: I'm 60, well past the age for enlistment, plus am 4F (not fit for military service) because of uncle Arthur and a spinal condition. No prior military service listed.
...Hospital Department Director: Again no degree, certifications, or experience in the healthcare field listed on the resume.

Then there's the location: I specify "Portland City 5-10 mi radius" from my area (zipcode) but end up getting referrals to positions in places like Camas WA, McMinville OR, Salem OR, Eugene OR, San Francisco CA, Kansas City MO, Boston MA, etc, all of which are well beyond that limit, and I mention in my profiles that I am not willing to relocate (as I do not have the means, nor can I afford to do).

It makes me almost feel I have just as good a chance at winning the lotto than I do finding a job.

...still not as bad as being on one of those "regional jets" many airlines have turned to using on even long haul flights. One connection I looked at had me on one over three hours (which with airport and weather delays could become much longer).

At least the train has more room, and where I live, a pub car.

I feel like it is difficult to get a job too.

...the job market where I live seems to be terribly polarised between high level professional, medical, and tech jobs (which I don't have the schooling and/or certification for) on one end, and low paying service occupations (which I am "overqualified" for) on the other, with very little left in the middle anymore (which is pretty much where I fit in).

Then there's the whole age thing where a lot of companies choose to hire someone younger because they know they can pay them less and sidestep any discrimination issue by simply claiming the younger candidate had more "relevant" experience, qualifications, and education. The only way to challenge this is filing a civil suit against the employer, and of you managed to win, would you really feel comfortable going to work everyday knowing your boss and the management had a chip on their shoulders?

In our immediate area there aren't many high paying jobs. You have to travel about a half hour to get to them. Our area is saturated with fast food, restaurants, and retail stores. There are some factory work but they don't pay for crap these days

Oh I'm off to spend time with someone who hates me this afternoon. Always thought it goes with the territory of work but I guess that's not quite normal outside of the creative industries

Had to finally make a market run yesterday, was cold and drizzly, not very fun especially the way I'm still feeling.

Storm that blew in last night turned into summer rain while I was asleep :)

...Portland really never fully recovered from the demise of the timber industry. Oh there was the "Silicon Forest" thing back in the 80s, but when the .com bubble burst a lot of that went elsewhere (mostly overseas). About all that is left is Intel. Tektronix (which has is nowhere near as big a player as they used to be) and a branch operation of HP.

The only other major industry is sports apparel development and marketing, represented by Nike and Adidas America (both which have farmed out their manufacturing offshore).

While Portland is considered the "mecca" of craft brewing, most operations are small start-ups, sometimes owned and manned by a several friends, so there are few opportunities there for the general public save for working in a brewpub as a bartender, cook, or server at minimum (and in some cases sub minimum due to expected income from tips) wage. Actually wouldn't mind bartending in a brewpub all that much, however the transit system stops operating in most areas an hour or more before closing time so a car is a necessity.

Bolton isn't that bad. And I really liked his version of Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay. OK, maybe that's the only one I can think of that I like. But I've heard much worse. That New Age stuff bores me to death, or nearly. I like sax, and jazz, but not so much Kenny Gee I'm Boring. :-P
