very cool .. and reading your process in the challenge thread is very clever... I must try it out.

I stuck my modeled head on another Lo-Rez figure .. I think I'll render again using your process HW yes

    great head Stezza!!

looking forward to seeing what you come up with the casutics

I used it on a huge ballerima scene for my show last year - I made the whole floor of Bal de http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/3036/start

a reflective surface and used casutics so the ballerima dresses were softly lit from the bottom - quite effective - and random lighting as well

I just posted this to the 3d group on Facebook - They deleted it because they assumed it was a painting.....

    A backhanded compliment perhaps

Like it, would it have been possible to make the helmet a shade darker/bluer so it stands out a bit more from the background ?

  • HeadwaxHeadwax Posts: 9,939

    yes great idea thanks :)

I made some subtle changes - hopefully not too subtle!

A bit about the process for anyone who is interested: I posted it over in the Artstudio NPR thread trying to talk carrara up. ;)

Method: I use Photodonut on Carrara render passes.

So I use different photodonut styles on eg shadows pass, reflection pass, outline pass etc, then combine them in post

the watercolour paper is generated by filter forge and I paint over the whole with Ron's watercolour brsuhes -

I also use them (the brushes) to erase parts of the overlaying render passes to expose other passes

the idea is to build everything up slowly and to preferable not start with your beauty render (beauty render being the render straight out of the box.

these are some of the render passes available natively in Carrara that I might work with

    this is the raw scene

this is Carrara's inbuilt toon renderer combined witha third party line renderer ToonPro (now Free). This is just in the assembly room spot render, not a full blown render.

I use a depth render - create atmospheric depth by inverting it.

I use a shadow pass to control the darker bits for detail. You can blur it for soft shadows or use any PD filter on it. You can even invert it and use the screen parameter to lighten unwanted shadows.

The possibilities are endless once you can separate your image into so many render passes.

I also do a bit of tone mapping - try it ;)

    thanks Veronika,

I used Akvis sketch for part of that finish in PSE2018 then used layers for extra blends smiley

OK am a bit slow on things having been ill with a nasty virus, then pleurisy and chasing two grandchildren around at the same time when over that... not much C-time.  Here's where my modern family will be living. The brother and sister are in the here and now and have found a palaeolithic artefact in the East Midlands.  It is really hard to break down the big scenes into passes to get better NPR effects, so I might leave any distant shots as they are. Then will concentrate on the closeups to get an illustrated feel. Not as happy with the two kids lighting. Will have to go back to the scene and make it brighter to get more contrast with DAP or any PS post work after applying Toon III.

There are Tango Alpha's Jackson Fields and Tangy Apply Orchard props in here.  Vehicles and buildings are from CGTrader or the other site and have been heavily modified, except for the Range Rover. There are rooms and stairs in the buildings, but as so small that I will build movie set type rooms instead of trying to get a camera in there. Looking foward to using Andy's Carrara kitchen!  Hedging and landscape in the distance is mostly my own.  The children are Misty's C3s which I love working with and can dress them in almost anything now.

Off to bed.... any criticisms or ideas welcome...they are needed!  smiley Silene
