The original plan was that there was no plan to release excrypted only content. That plan lasted only a few days. But is was a good plan in hindsight.
No, that was the new plan after the previous one was abandoned. Early beta, the info we were provided was that eventually all products would be encrypted. Including back catalogue items - all products.

Actually this is incorrect, as there was no way to encrypt Poser items to make them work in poser. Also the plan was not to encrypt old back catalog items. Several posts was made to this fact despite people still making this incorrect statement.

Sorry (no offence intended), but your memory is faulty. The original plan was to encrypt everything; tbh, it doesn't matter now as they abandonned it. And what they have planned for the future we have no clue about, and can only guess, not even speculate.

I don't think they did; it might have seemed that way for those running the beta version that in fact did encrypt everything downloaded via connect to test the decryption side of things, but I truly doubt they entertained the idea of doing so for real for the reasons given by Male-M3dia

I seem to recall the Poser issue being raised, but that could be a faulty memory. Their statement of encrypting everything, may not have meant everything, but the words used and phrasing surely indicated that was the intention, as did the replies in the original thread.

Originally Connect installs were all going to be encrypted, even if the DIM install wasn't, presumably to simplify the coding and support. Happily that was changed very early on and only content that was released encrypted would be encrypted in Connect installs (and then that was changed to encrypted only for the first year of release).

I followed the initial encryption thread very closely, and Richard's summary is exactly how I remembered it.
Have there been any analyses yet as to whether or not DRM has resulted in increased sales? That was the point of implementing it, right?
I doubt that there have been enough of them to get an accurate picture yet, especially with how many tend to be deeply discounted or are combined with special offers, etc.
I'm usually fully onboard with DAZ and LOVE using DIM but I simply can't get Connect to work for the simple fact that *my* 'Smart Content' just absolutely refuses to work. Had it up and running once for a few minutes then something happened and I'm back to manual directories (perhaps it was around the time I installed Carrara?). I've tried this, tried that, did this, these, those and whatever else I found in the forum, even with supervised help we just finally gave up. No joy. No luck. (Yes even install/uninstall/reinstall of DAZ as well as firewall this and that and blah blah blah until I was sick of the whole mess. I USUALLY manage to get things working - ALWAYS actually, but this just sucked the will to live right out of me.) So, without a super simple, very bullet-proof system it will exclude lots of people. I don't care about it being locked down and I'd like to help protect DAZ assets, but *I* don't pirate or give stuff away but I sure am paying a price. The irony - hacked stuff WOULD run for anyone. Legitimately purchased stuff sits in some secret bomb shelter underground wasting away and neglected for lack of ability to use it. And I'm peeved at myself right now for having just bought something and failing to notice that it was Connect only. Grrr.
Another example of the advantages of manual downloads and installs. If you've purchased something that's DAZRM'd, you find out right away and can ask for a refund. I love the line in the CS reply: "Please uninstall the item".
As far as I know, this has not been implemented yet, so here we go.
I wrote a small script that marks encrypted items on both the category page, and the checkout page.
Here's what it looks like on the category page:
And here's what it looks like on the shopping cart page.
The script is a "first draft", it works with a manually updated list of products. Meaning: it does not automatically check the products, and as such, new products that have not been added to its brain yet will not be marked.
Please let me know if I missed any products, and if you find this script useful at all.
Link to download is in my signature, it's the "Mark encrypted items" script.
Thank you, I love these! But how do I hide PC+ items? I only see "Show PC+ items"
Have there been any analyses yet as to whether or not DRM has resulted in increased sales? That was the point of implementing it, right?
Technically, the point was to prevent products from appearing on illegal download sites within hours of release; the justification given was that it would increase sales, though it's doubtful that it actually has the intended effect. I suspect we won't know until the first few paid items become available unencrypted whether it's working or not.

Not even then, realistically: How many people got mad at it being encrypted and forgot about it by the time the year was up? How many people saw the connect only thing and dropped a shopping cart of other items? How many people thought to pirate an item, saw it wasn't available pirated, and decided to purchase it? How many people were going to pirate an item but couldn't find it pirated and didn't bother with buying anything? How many people just didn't notice an item was encrypted or not? How many people got an item from their friends or families and then decided to buy their own content as a result? How many sales have been lost because people were irritated at the connect changes and stopped impulse buying other items? (I know for me this last one was 90% of my purchasing gone.)
How do you get any of those numbers? Which of them matter?
I'm not buying any encrypted content now, but I'm not wishlisting holding my breath for the year to be up either. If some item that was encrypted is on sale after the period and it's a good deal, then I'll look at it the same as any other item, but by that point its value as a new thing will already be long gone and it'll have to be on super steep discounts to be worth bothering with, the same as people treat any older content. So nothing really changes at that point.
I don't think there's any way to really know what impact it has without magical powers, frankly.
For Daz, they can compare sales of the encrypted items against items of the same type that are not encrypted
They might well do it that way, but that won't say anything about the items of the same type being released at different times under different sales (conditions aren't equal and if the conditions are equal everyone is going to veer towards the unencrypted one, if they even notice it.) It also won't show how many sales they didn't make. This thread alone shows that there are certainly customers who are either refusing to buy encrypted content or being turned off buying unencrypted content. Suppose the forum base is as an example 10% of the customer base, all of the encryption threads have been quite active in comparison to many other threads, so it could be inferred that a portion of the customer base is buying less because of the encrypted and/or connect only changes.
But then they shelve characters for good because they "didn't sell well" when on inspection there were many other factors involved, so who knows what they'll actually look at.
I don't think there's any way to really know what impact it has without magical powers, frankly.
What's my user name?
I've pointed out what the impact will be, before.
Cause there maybe times
When you think you lost your mind
And the steps you're takin'
Leave you three, four steps behind
But the road you're walking
Might be long sometimes
You just keep on steppin'
And you'll just be fine, yeah

Yes, I can confirm that. The very first few hours, it was *all* content, but that was changed very fast as the DAZZlers were run over by hot molten lava og customer anger....

Please look at at the comment richard said about connect. Poser items were not part of connect because there was no way to encypt them and make them usable in Poser. So I was correct. Let's move on. Also make sure you read a thread all the way to the end so don't repeat stuff that has been already covered.

It depends what you meant by "Poser" items. If you mean any item with Poser support, then most of these (since they were also DS items) were intended to be part of DAZ Connect, and thus would have been encrypted at the start. However Poser users would still be able to install using manual/DIM, and so in theory it was not an issue for them that the same items were encrypted when installed with Connect.
If you mean items which only supported Poser (they are only a handful of these in the store), then I imagine that these were never intended to be installed via Connect and thus encrypted.

There.
Bringing up wildly inaccurate past things over and over only makes the case against encryption weaker.
To clarify - only Daz Studio native formats (.ds? scripts, .duf user files and .dsf asset files) can be encrypted. Other formats (Poser files, OBJs, textures) cannot be encrypted.
Comments
Since a lot of the back catalog is in Poser format they will not get encrypted, Poser wouldn't be able load them if they where.
True. But that doesn't change the fact nicstt is correct:

Are you not seeing the discount? This is what I see with both AMZ2s and the addon kit in the cart.
