Early SS is at age 62...for now.  But you lose some of your benefits.  Full retirment is 66...for now.  If you wait until 70 you get even more.  But it sounds like you aren't going to make it unitl 70 (to retire).  I may be forced to take it at 62 as well.  Nothing else happening.  sad

...well, if I want, I can now retire however retiring early only gives you 75% of what you would get on Social Security compared to if you waited until your optimal retirement age (65 or 66). If you waited until 71, you'd get an extra 24 %.

The deck is totally stacked against us.

I have Medicare and Medicaid because I am mentally ill. I have an official diagnosis which gives me perks like half fair for buses.   I do not suffer from insanity but enjoy almost every moment of it.   I do not enjoy the spontaneous suicidal thoughts which range from quitting my job to giving up on life.   I do not act on them as they are not well planned out or good ideas most of the time.  Sometimes I think quitting my job would be a good idea if I could figure out a better one than this one and get that job.   Rule is no quitting a job unless I am moving too far or already have a new job to start the next day.

I did not quit the Winn Dixie job even when they were closing down.  I quit the Wendy's job because I had to move to a different state.  Three hour commute one way was too much for a low paying job.  I actually only quit one job and that was my first real job and it was at a pet store. I just finished high school and went to college in a different state but did not think of just putting for leave of absence and promise to come back for breaks. I did do that for Winn Dixie.

I started SS at 62. When I balanced the amount of money I could draw until 66 or 71 against how many years I would have to live after those ages until I was able to draw enough money to equal the money I could have already drawn from age 62, seemed like a good idea to get the money as soon as I could. Sure, I could get more money per month if I waited, but how long will I live when I get that much older? (shrugs)

Still no snow.  Not even ice.  Lots of rain though.  If it had all been snow I'd be trapped for days.

Made it out to the postoffice today.  Finally received a new CD disk I ordered weeks ago.  Very moody.  Sounds like I'm trudging through cold mud into a deeper and deeper hole expecting any moment to turn a corner and find a vast entrance to the underworld with demons waiting for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X88o7dt-qQ  Cesar Franck: Symphony in D minor 1st movement.

...therein lies the rub and the quandary I face. Unless I can qualify for HUD, what I will get per month will not even cover the rents around here.

This is why I jokingly refer to the Lotto as "the last chance for a real retirement plan" as unless you had a career in the military, worked for the railroads, for Boeing, for the Post Office or the for the giverment, there is no such thing as a pension anymore. 401k's are a total sham.

...as I understand there is this freak storm inm the Atlantic which has sent temperatures at the north pole soaring by 50° above normal for this time of year.  It is predicted to be the strongest ever storm to hit the North Atlantic with hurricane force winds and torrential rains and threatens not only Iceland, but the UK as wel, the latter still reeling from flooding in many areas after a previous storm.

Have to disagree about the 401k in my case. Was able to save enough for retirement that way. It depended on the company plan I was offered. Hope you get the HUD, KK. yes

...yeah, for me 401k came too late to make difference when I was working (right at the start of the recession which is also when the company moved out to the western burbs and I had to start bus commuting). As I was still also finshing off paying student loans, the wage I was making pretty much had me living from paycheque to paycheque. Crikey, it came down to me having to make the choice between a monthly bus pass to get to work or the company sponsored health coverage.

Hence Social Security is all I really have to look forward to.

Next week going to check with the local housing authority on HUD qualifications (seems nobody wants to deal with anything important during the "hoiliday" week).

Still 3 more years for Medicare (in a way, not looking forward to that, as the premium costs are to go up in 2016), however I will still qualify for the state medical plan I'm currently on.
