Joe's Toon Heroes are of course totally awesome... I think a mix of the female Toon Hero and a little bit of Josie 9 might look really good, too!

Re HD, I too was under the impression that all G9 core characters will include HD. If no one said it explicitely then it was implied, or at the very least poorly communicated. The error in the copy of Josie was just a very unfortunate cherry on top. I think that's why some are put off, I totally get it.

I have always believed that Daz core characters should be setting the standard, setting a high bar that all PAs strive for, whether it be realistic or toon. With Genesis 9 being so new and prices going up, it is even more important to set this standard. Try to blow our minds, not our wallets. If you can set the bar high, the wallets will open, and people will move towards G9 naturally in order to get that quality.

I shared that belief until Daz repeatedly disabused me of it. Their history suggests that Genesis 9 Core Figure quality will be just as inconsistent as Genesis 8/8.1 Core Figure quality. I'm hopeful for a shift, but the Genesis 9 People store category containing less than 10% people is not encouraging.

Also, catching up on this thread, dang guys, some of that is harsh. I don't know if you're living in The Netherlands or Deepest Montana where the women are built like the mountains, but in many place in the world 163cm is a normal if not average height for an adult woman. Here in Finland, she would be a full inch taller than average. The eye size is a little on the large size, sure, but the nose bridge and slope, lip shape and chin point, and skin shading suggest Thai, Phillipina, or other Asian Islander mix, not a freakish babyface on an adult body. Yeah the lips are a bit full, but there's lip gloss these days that will puff them up temporarily (chemically increasing circulation to the lips) without the need for fillers. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it reflects current youth a lot better than trying to resuscitate young looks from 20-30 years ago because it's what us old farts imagine a young person to look like - an important factor in trying to bring a younger generation into this hobby.

I checked the files, the only thing I see different is the large metadata image was replaced with a small one.

I'm pretty sure I posted this before, maybe it got deleted for some reason or was in a different thread?  But anyway here is Josie's skin on a mixed character with some Josie dialed in. I don't think her skin looks as bad as others are saying. Looks like normal human skin to me. I realized after rendering that the lips look off but I'm pretty sure that's an issue with my morph, not the texture.

Like I said right before you first posted that render, I think the problem with Josie's skin in the promos isn't the detail map, but the lack of specularity. Promo Josie looks dessicated, while yours looks normal (no pun intended).

Personally I think almost all promo renders for DAZ core characters look awful. At least the first few. They often post more artistic renders towards the end, maybe by PAs or professional artists that are much better than the first several promos. I'm not sure what lighting they use but it's usually really awful. Sorry to insult anyone but I really think they should switch out their main promo artist (s). Thorne does great promos for their non-DAZ characters, too bad they didn't do the renders for the DAZ Originals.

  • She looks like a good character and her mega bundle looks really good too. I like the poses, outfits and Chanelle Sweet Hair and the hair has so many options! When I can get the bundle I definately will

No one has posted anything about the new face materials update yet, so here's a test render.

a little less than 600 iterations with just the sun-sky light.

    Looks better to me.

Turning the "Detail Normal Map" strength down from 0.70 to 0.35 helps in my opinion.

edit:Just to be clear I changed the strength on the Head map. I also dialed out that weird top lip of hers with the head shapes morphs pack.

If that had been how she had looked when she was released, I might have bought her. You did a very nice job on fixing her up to look like a older teen/young college age woman.

    Thank you.

  • Sorry for the bump. Her top lip really bugs me. To be honest I was hoping for an 8.1 release with PBR materials, but it's easy enough to load up G8.1 and dial it in from there so c'est la vie. Going to keep an eye out for more characters to come out for J9 before I really dig in. Definitely interested though.

Thanks for the bump, @kraftwerkd, because I'd missed the new materials post by IceCrMn, which just put Josie 9 on my wishlist.

    Speculation!!!

In the past, Daz did not, as a rule, list products used in promos for Daz Originals.  This lead to a lot of complaints.  The bland, lifeless promos we see now may be in reaction to those complaints.   It may also be a matter of saving money on promo artists, so that they can pass those savings on to us.

Edit: Thank for the texture renders.  They're an improvement over the promos.  I've purchased a lot of Thorne characters, but Josie had very little appeal based on the promos.

  • I reduced her bumps and upped the transparency, I think she's looking pretty good

I actually prefer the blander promos, to the gussied up ones, for the same reason I like menu pics to be real with me. Don't show me the hamburger under the exactly perfect conditions, angle and lighting, show me how it's gonna look on my plate!
