I'm really liking G9 so far. I can make good looking faces with it and there aren't even any 3rd party morphs out for it yet. Of course, I don't really do nudes, so I'm sure it's different for those that do.

It started well before it was even released, actually.

well to be fair i think which many peoples like myself where not expectating the "short comes", they where expectacting "improviments without "cut off", or minimum cutt offs, but gen9 ended coming with many cut off and short comes and some dubious acts, which really make hard for many peoples to be "happy and enter in the train to easy and fast.

...and it also "cut off" my favourite sale of the year by two weeks.

May it be there's a reason ? G9 is HD based that means only PAs can do HD morphs for G9, and HD is stressing the hardware not everyone can afford it. Plus DAZ made a mess with the shop we have Victoria 9 without makeup, basic skins without anatomy etc. Honestly, G9 is the worst genesis ever.

Luckily 3rd parties come to the rescue with G9 expansions, but these are workarounds on features that should have been fixed by DAZ.

Same, this did prejudice me against her. It wasn' a very smart move, in my opinion.

Still, she looks fine and improved, I'm sure - just not interesting for me.

Well, if you're gonna ride this G9 train, you'd better keep up with its releases, because the rampant miscategorisation that has turned G8 store searches into exercises of frustration or futility is continuing with G9. G9 products may be found under G8, G8.1, or G9, but some are not found under any category, giving new meaning to the phrase "go figure."

Unfortunately this is one of the main gripes I have with Daz's Store, it can get very annoying and confusing trying to find content that I am after.

There is one 3rd party vendor that I know of had recreated one of their G8 characters on G9, and it was a completely different looking character.

Yeah... First they should fix the categorisation of products, which is currently all over the place and has no logic to it.

Then they should give us filters for categories we are not looking for, ie. when one is searching for characters, one could select not to show additional texture sets for some clothing, poses or expression sets, etc...

Exactly, it would be nice to just be able to search / filter a specific type of content a lot more than what there is now.

I agree. Gen9 is in many ways 2 steps forward one step back, and what REALLY pisses me off is that G8.1 is still so new (The funny thing is G8.1 had finally hit the point where it had enough unqiue morphs and support that I was willing to overlook my bugbears with it (incompatability with many Geoshell products, the screwy UV, and less compatibility with non-standard auto-fit clones) to start using it.

In fact, I think the mistake is Genesis 8.1, not Genesis 9.
That's why I didn't take G8.1 seriously and pretty much ignored it. Nothing of the G8.1 version justified a new figure. It could have all been done on G8 alone.
People shouldn't be angry about G9, the should about G8.1 instead.

Agree there, not sure why G8.1 was ever created. With how quickly G9 came out, G8.1 was a total waste.

  • Well, I bought in a little into G9 but will definitively wait to fully embrace. There are still a lot of open questions. Regarding the fact that new products might focus on G9. Well I do have so much stuff for G8/8.1 already I can safely ignore and pick only the one or other thing.

As long as there are no valid ways to port over G8/8.1 skins and morphs with ease I don't feel the urge to go all G9. AFAIK there are ways to port over a Gen8/8.1 shape to Gen9 and to do a Gen9 clone for G8/8.1 to use clothing etc. on previous versions.

Only thing which really bothers is that HD thing. Why can't DAZ make this available on large scale for Non-PAs? If I understand it right this would make it much easier to port morphs and older HD stuff, no? Still need to get used to having to increase viewport SubD to get a better idea what my render might look like.

(Sorry if I might confuse things but for an end consumer understanding how the whole G9 is supposed to work is not that easy to understand)

I think that's a quite unfriendly way to talk about people who just say that they don't like and probably won't work with a new product offered by a company. Other's might call it "valuable feedback", as in the majority of posts even the reasons for the unwillingness to use G9 are given. And as DAZland - and about every company on the planet - usually states: the number of people writing here on the forum is only a minimal percentage of the happy people out there using whatever product is givent to them... so a handful of complainers call for "time of death" on a product should be in no way noteworthy... unless sales' numbers show that they would be right.

    Are they right? devil

  • Returned a couple of G9 items today.

Yeah that attitude is really convincing me, Oso. People are right to be incredulous about G9. I mean look at 8.1. That's only been on the market for a short time and it's already being supplanted. PAs already pledging to go full steam ahead on G9.

The new UVs required the new surface groups, the new surface groups required a new base mesh. So no, it couldn't have been done on Gensis 8 as was - but Daz went to great lengths to preserve almost complete compatibility with Gensis 8, which is why it was just a dot release even though it was strictly a new figure.

They are not, in fact. :)

The frustration is, we've been working with G9 and have seen all the improvements and how much easier and better it is as a whole than previous generations. While the forums are indeed a very small percentage of the user base, it's hard to see something you're excited about get bashed completely-- especially when a lot of the complaints are unrelated to the actual product (like a sale being shortened), or simply wrong because people don't know how it works yet. But the phrase "calling time of death" was used by a user here in the forums who used it about G9, so I'm not sure how it's unfriendly. It is dishearteneing to see so many people unwilling to give something new a chance. A real chance that is. If you go into something expecting to hate it, you'll find a reason to.

I think the overall vibe is somewhat generated by the way G9 wqas released, imo haphazrdly. Different than previous releases, and the fact many of us are overwhelmed with products and by the increasing prices. There were really no introduction sales  that contained the necessities. Why not a package of the morphs, at minimum, upon release? there were not even morphs at release. V9 is very nice looking, but no makeup? then you have to buy a separete makeup package?  A lot of us not into unimesh. Yes, it is easy enough to create a feamle and male and save those as your starting characters. I'm not sure about all those brows .. and the cards .. maybe a product without cards? what the heck are cards anyway? Genitals in a separate product of brows .. it appears as an afterthought, with no materials. OVerall the entire release just seems off.

Will I use G9? Its in my content so probably, and I will probably buy the morphs. Products are, at this moment, slowly rolling out. I'm not technically knowledgable enough to worry about the mesh, quads, triangles, and all that stuff, or why there are no nipples built into the mesh, or why bends, joints, bones, and all that work or not. I just use the stuff and strike a pose. I like simplicity and not having to learn Blender or Zbrush to obtain a morph or whatever. Overall though, having to buy a zillion products to fill out the G9 requirements isn;t happening anymore. As a hobbyist, my budget has shrunk. If I can port over clothing and hair, I'm good. You might see me flying in the breeze holding on to the caboose, not quite on the train.  I need to learn to do my own skin textures too.

We don't want you to think it's the best thing ever. We think it's the best we've had to work with so far.

G8.1 was out for 21 months before 9 came out and was more akin to the 4.2 update for Victoria 4 than a generational change. G8 was out 3 1/2 years before that. That gives G8 a very long in the tooth 5 1/2 year run, during which industry standards were established or changed, and the user base expanded exponentially. Prior generations ran about 2 years before being updated to a new generation.

  • EllessarrEllessarr Posts: 1,395

yeah calling int "death" is a lot of dramatic" for me, while for me it's a no no i know which many customers will buy it, because like any stuff you have many type of customers like "die hard fan"/addicted which will buy anything no matter the quality, you have "average joe customers" which will buy it or by curiosity or by really needs, or peoples which liked the new features like the unisex mesh" then its not dead and it gonna sell "well" to pay for itself, the only big change will be the "probably the sales not will be "big" as previous genesis" and you get more 'pass" and refunds" than in previous genesis, because some changes where really a big "game change" for those users,

Another note which is important to take in account is "what some peoples see as "improvements" others can be it as a downgrade what is matter is perspective and direction, g9 is more directed towards "rendering" with HD whiich is also displayed in the current new outfits since many of then are really high poly means "rendereing", while it become "amazing for PA artists it's become "bad" for some customers because the "improvements" for they point of view and "needs" it is a downgrade, that is a point.

Making more easy for one side not aways means "awesome" for all sides or all peoples" all choices have good and "bad effects".

  • vrba79vrba79 Posts: 1,398
I've thus far had PAs try to convince me that fewer material zones, bloated poly counts and models lacking basic features (now sold separately) are actually good things. I'm sure these are good things, for them.

The tell is that we're the ones that have worked with it extensively already. I'd also point out there's not a single G9 thing in my store. I have no new products to benefit from G9 sales. There is zero gain for me to push G9 over G8 or 8.1 at this point. In fact, there *is* gain in me pushing 8/8.1 over 9.

The other tell is that people who like something tend not to visit forums to talk about it.

I'm certainly not a Published Artist and I defended it. But my use cases are not like some. I don't really do nudes (I think in the 20 plus years I've been doing this I can count on one hand all the nudes I've done). If I did do nudes I might be slightly peeved. Maybe. There's that naughty site for the nether regions that those that do that kind of art will get their equipment from ANYWAY and another site has nipples already. I even thought of getting the nipples just to be well-rounded but got a feeling they'll only work on the females correctly anyway. My females will be covered, but it's the gents that need better nipples IMVHO. LOL. Either way, I'm not that worried about that part of the anatomy. However, I know I ain't everybody. :)

If there is a train, I guess I am already on it, I am having fun with G9 so far. I have only made one character, but I like her so far. I don't know why everyone is ragging on G9 so much, I mean it's not like most of y'all haven't had to switch to a new generation and start mostly from scratch before.
