Another thing.
When saving an expression you need to save it as a Genesis Face Controls preset and not as a Genesis figure preset.
So create your expression, make sure the Genesis Face Controls is selected, then go to File - Save As - Pose Preset.
When loading the pose you need to load it on the Genesis Face Controls and not the Genesis Figure.
I have checked and Face Controls are still marked as selectable in scene hierarchy, but I still cannot select GUI controls in scene view.
Anyhow, another funny expression on Mark... https://www.daz3d.com/mark-for-genesis-8-male
I'll have to double check if that's what I was trying to shut off when my render finishes. I can't access that right now. I'll let you know. It's possible I was trying to turn the wrong thing off and that's why it wasn't working.
When I created a new scene, the GUI controls are selectable again.
What a fun tool it is. I am already addicted to Face Controls.
Another example on Asher - https://www.daz3d.com/asher-hd-for-genesis-8-male
Works for me in both the older 4.12 pro general release and the 4.14.0.8 beta.
One more expression on Asher - https://www.daz3d.com/asher-hd-for-genesis-8-male
Thanks Faux2d - next quesiton will the saved pose preset be useable without having face control loaded? quess the real question is can the poses be saved and distributed - asuming of course posed made can legally be used.
for some reason, the face control attachment loads at 0,0,0 for me. selecting a posed g8 character and then doubleclicking the "Genesis Face Control" icon at the base level of the Genesis Face Control folder (which i eventually found in the Pose directory) does not place the nifty control mask on my figure.
applying it to a zeroed figure seems to work. but applying a saved pose preset then leaves the nifty control mask hanging in the air at 0,0,0.
what am i doing wrong? the controller is parented to the figure. it just doesn't seem to care.
i installed via DIM.
I think my favorite thing about this is how much easier it makes it for me to tweak expressions on monstery characters. It can be hard to get subtle expressions or human emotion to work with faces that are really far from the base model shape.
You have to parent it to the head for it to follow, but it works no matter where it is. If you want it in front of the face of an already posed character you'll have to position it; I think the align tool should work to get it near them easily.
still not that impressed. i feel like i can do most of the things in powerpose already.
then i can add some nice wrinkles to it with AFE.
having a standardized system is probably handy for professionals, but I think powerpose should suffice for the average user .
If you load Face Control on an already posed figure, just select Face Control and loading it and changing the parent to the Head bone, and then right click on the parameters tab and choose "Zero Figure's Pose" that will set it to a relative zero location to wherever the head currently is. It will also reset the Face Control dials and give you a Zero expression face.
I've also found it handy to move it about 3-5 points forward on the Z translate and then lock the Z translate so it won't zero out if I need to reset the Face Control's position relative to where the figure is or clear out the pose that's on the Face Control.
I hadn't thought of this, thank you for sharing it!
The poses (the facial expressions created with the Face Controls) are presets for the Face Controls thus you can't load them on a Genesis figure. The Face Controls is a figure in of itself independent of the Genesis figure.
There's a workaround to this. Create your expression with the Face Controls, then delete the Face Controls from your scene. The changes made should be transferred to the Genesis figure and you could then save the expression on the Genesis figure as a pose preset for Genesis. However, loading this Genesis pose preset on the Face Controls will not work.
If the character is already posed, the tool won't change position at all when loading it in the scene.
Here's what you can do. I always keep Keyframe 0 clear of any changes, Genesis is at zero pose. Let's say that in Keyframe 1 the Genesis figure is posed. If I load the Face Controls in Keyframe 1 the position will not change. If I load the Face Controls in Keyframe 0 and parent it to Genesis' head, then at Keyframe 1 the Face Controls would move accordingly. This is a valid trick for any item you wish to parent on an already posed character.
My render is finally done. I did a little bit of post on it. I had fun getting this expression. I'm looking forward to playing with the Face Controls some more.
I can't hardly do anything in PowerPose without a long struggle so this is on my list.
Save a scene with face controls and reload it I got this error message:
dzassetdaz.cpp(6870): Duplicate formula found linking XScale & XScale in D:/Daz/My Library/data/Faux2D/Genesis Face Controls/Genesis Face Controls/FACE_CONTROLS_G8.dsf
This looks fantastic!! I love the look on her face. So many more possibilities with this, can't wait to see more renders!
Thanks for the tip about "Zero Figure's Pose". For the stylized characters is a must.
Below is an example usage on Atlas - https://www.daz3d.com/atlas-for-genesis-8-male
Only the first product has the Interactive License option. Which is weird for the others not having it as they all should be useful for facial motion capture.
Finally creating expressions is fun and easy, even for the stylized characters, like Atlas.
To drink or not to drink, that is the question...
Well folks kept mentioning toon characters so I did have to try.
I may have gotten carried away.
my favs
I really like the chin raising stuff It is usually kind of painfull to do manually with powerpose but it makes for some fun expressions
did this just subconsiously feel like a movie poster because shes got the whole smirk with one eyebrow up al la pretty much every animated movie poster post-shrek?
It seems to work better for stylized characters than for more realistic ones.
I wouldn't necesarily say that - I find it very useful for modifying the daz hd expressions, I personally find it more intuitive than powerpose
However, used completely in isolation it is operating at the base res so for things like smiles where in the real world we get all sorts of creases and crinkles its not going to capture that like an hd morph.
pls ignore bald head examples, but daz Smile open full face dialed in to 100%
vs smile open full face at 80% modified with the face controls
now I could theoretically do the same without this tool using a combination of dials and powerpose and it is but this I find faster and easier to get something that looks less painful. Being able to select the corner of the mouth pull it in any direction and have the rest of the mouth and cheeks follow it is nice
I will be releasing an add-on with corrective morhs + HD morphs. Here is a sample. Normal results on the left and on the right same pose but with corrective morphs.
I am a newbie here. After going over the comments about Genesis 3 & 8 Face Controls, I purchased it yesterday. After installing the product using DIM, I tried to follow the instruction given. Because I couldn't find face controls in my already-defined Studio base directory, I tried to locate it under the product folder in the content library pane. I found it but something was wrong. Unlike the other content products, this one had a strange icon. I think this icon means the product was not properly installed. Am I right? Attached is a screenshot. This product consists of two files. However, it looks like only one file was properly installed. However, when I used DIM to install the product, there was no sign of a failed installation. Then I tried to download and install the product manually. When I unzipped the 2nd file, I got the error message saying 'failed to extract some files'. Is there any possibility of something wrong with the 2nd file? How can I fix this?
Now we're talking! I'm excited for this!
There's one small zip file and one large zip file. The Face Controls are in the small zip file. The large zip file contains some tutorials (already found here) and the Daz to Dynamixyz pipeline plus some documentation.
I don't really know what's with the alert thing icon, it might be because there's no official icon for it. The Genesis Face Controls file that you load in the scene can actually be placed anywhere. I recommend following Daz's advice as it helps keeping your files organized, which is what you did in your case. Load it in the scene on a Genesis figure and see if it works.
File management was a struggle for me at first too. If the tool doesn't work I recommend unzipping the archive. You'll get a folder file called "Content". In this folder there are 3 other folders "data", "People", and "Runtime". Copy these folders in your base Daz directory (the location where all your content is installed). You'll know it's the base directory because it will have a bunch of folders including "data", "People", and "Runtime". Then in Studio the tool will be located under People -> Genesis 8 female (for example) -> Poses.
I got it. After following your instruction, I finally located the face controls. Thank you for your detailed explanation. Have a nice weekend!
Want. Now.
... Pretty please?
I agree! That's exactly what I thought when I saw this product.
