    Tentacles are this one: https://www.daz3d.com/tentacles

Recolored with arm material and ngs shader and parented to a null.

You know, I saw those and considered getting them at one time.  I never would have thought of doing that with them, though.  That is just all kinds of clever!  :)

I remembered when you first did those tentacles years ago. Still looking good!

I wanted to try to do a pose of a kiss through a chain fence. I did two versions, and decided I liked the first one with Boyd/Owen in fatigues better, but there is something I like about the second one... You can decide which you prefer. =-)

I like the camera angle of the first one better. I like the bare hands on the first one much better than the gloves on the second one. Great finger posing on the fence, too!

Thanks! I liked that image too.

This is an interesting thing I've been messing with. Basically doing one iray render, one 3delight render, and combining them and tinkering with them in photoshop. I want to see if I can use 3delight to speed up some of my darker renders, and yet take advantage of iray's realism. I render on a notebook so anything I can do to speed stuff up.

I haven't messed with 3delight in a year really, so I was lucky to find an old Owen skin pre-conversion so I could test it out.

Results look interesting I think. This may need more study. =-)

Combining the two should speed up things- a very interesting thought! Will be interesting to see what you come up with.

That looks kind of interesting.  Is that background added in after or is that what was rendered in 3DL?  What did the two layers look like that you started with from 3DL and Iray?  I love the pose and then kind of pensive far off look he has.

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

That definitely sounds like its worth investigating.  There are plenty of things that just don't convert that well to Iray and mixing the two sounds very interesting

I agree. I think exploring a fusion of iray/3delight may produce some really cool results. Iray tends to bleach out renders, creating a colorized photo look. I spend a fair amount of time trying to ad nuance back, and 3delight is very good at that. I also dislike the grainyness of iray renders. I might not have that problem if my machine were high end and could render better, but I work with what I have so sometimes there is unfortunate grainy shadows 3delight doesn't have that issue, so it is an excellent means of blending those undesirable artifacts out.

To answer the questions, my initial render did have the background. I did 1 render in iray using a stock lightset. I then loaded Owen's 3delight textures, and did several 3delight rendres with stock sets.

I came back a while later and had 4 rather awful 3delight renders and 1 nicely done although rather plain iray render.

Oddly, my first render which was quite purple and horrid and blown out proved to be quite useful.

I took them into PS and using the various layer options combined them and adjusted them. With the layer effects you can brighten, lighten, burn, and change the colors of your layers so they look pretty good. Here were my originals be warned, ugliness and pokethrough

I think there is tremendous potential with this technique especially if you are going for a certain pulpy style.

Here's another go at this technique. It isn't a perfect render- but good enough for the technique to show. For some reason in Dark renders, Boyd's scalp always shows as a grainy shadow. I usually have to do two renders to scrub it out. And yes there is a thumb malfucnction on the cute officer performing the toast. You can see I introducted the 3delight image into the other render, with different photoshop techniques just to try different looks.

One thing I find interesting, if you don't bother converting the 3delight textures you can use the iray render and just render in 3delight. It has the advantage of bring out some of the highlights in the skin.

I removed Owen from the bar scene. Poor dear. But I thought it was more interesting without him. =-)

    Hi Serene Knight,

I saw that you picked up the Spartech Jumper and I was wondering if you could give your impression of it? I am interested to find out if the front light bar is a prop or if it can be hidden? Keep up the awesome work and love your Sci Fi images

Sure, I'll take a look at it further tonight. The lightbar is not a prop. The frontal roll bar/guards are props, but the lightbar is not. There are 4 mat zones for the lights and it can be removed by adjusting cutout opacity to zero, although oddly the glass doesn't fully disappear in preview mode, they don't show in when rendering.

So far, I like the look of the textuers on the set. Very realistic. I think this looks like it is going to be a fun purchase. Will test a bit more later. Want to see how the tires move, but I really like the texture and shading on the front glass.

These two pics weren't rendered to completion, but you can see what it looks like without the front light bar

Thanks! that helps a lot, I have the Tutorial that DED sold that contains what appears to be the origional version of this vehicle that doesn't ahve the light bar and lights in what looks like a grill on this version. Also missing is a gun for the back, a different bumper and a texture that gives a shoutout to its HALO roots. Now I will have to find that tutorial and see if the textures match up.

Boyd became ill at seven  and to save his life his parents opted for him to become disembodied. He lived as a brain in a special environment as a drone operator and robotics expert  until his twenties when he eventually gets this body-it is not the one he ordered though.

He is probably thinking this guy ignored him before he became embodied. And now he wants a date!

Yeah they do eventually marry after the war is over. They aren't romantically involved  for some time though due to situations beyond their control.

I've been wanting a sci-fi restroom for some time. So I took the plunge and picked up Crew Restrooms 2260 by 3-D-C at rendo. I found it cleaned up nicely with iray shaders added. Looks really good. I don't think sets need to have super heavy textures. Also liked that Aeonsoul's new outfit for men had so many great adjustment morphs. Definitely worth checking out. I don't thi

Had to paint on the moisture by hand. No good sweat brushes, and I haven't liked results with the geo shells.

WOW that looks really amazing! I used a lot of 3-D-C's stuff when I used Poser and still use them for a few projects in studio as well. You are right they are great for sci-fi backgrounds with a little bit of clean up. I am curious, you seem to have a well developed back story for your characters, are you working on an illistrated novel TPB or comic for them? It isn't very often you run across an artist that has such well developed characters.

Yeah, the 3-d-c stuff frequently fills gaps in what we don't get here at DAZ. Plus, I like that they render pretty quickly. I prefer to complete my renders fast and pull the images into photoshop for further alteration.

Yeah, most of my images have a story to tell. I only really like images that tell stories.

. If I had more time, and a better computer I'd pull it all into a graphic novel. Unfortunately work, and family mean I only have a a few hours a day to work on my hobby.

My images mostly cover the adventures of Owen and Boyd. Owen is a Master Sergeant USMC in the future. He is from a blue collar family and is drafted into the army at 17 (he is now in his late 20's)  after earth has been subject to invasion by an agressive alien species.  How he ends up in the marines from the army  is part of the story. Owen is a tough guy, who is not intially bio-enhanced. He is entirely human, which is unusual in the future where people who can afford enhancements usually pay top dollar for them, but Owen's parents were anti-gen-mod and very publicly so, so he didn't get any. He gets ribbed often for being fair, which is uncommon in the future where most people are mixed race. Owen has a secret ability which he rarely uses.

Boyd is the product of genetic engineering, however in his case, something went wrong. Despite having a superior mind, and body he became ill at 7, which resulted in his brain to be removed and for him to become an unbodied individual. He did not let that slow him down,as he earned multiple degrees, and has made quite a bit of money with his programing and electronic skills. When war occurs his business is taken over by the army and eventually becomes a pilot in . Boyd has a great sense of humor, and combats most situations with a light edge which doesn't agree with everyone. He is from the South. He wants his body back, but his first attempt to get a body is commandeered by sick US senator. He had to wait for the next compatible one, which is the one he presently wears.

The two became partners during a program pairing a drone piloted unbodied individuls with select human soldiers.

My stories mostly involve certain themes that I enjoy such as:

    Duty and honor

What it means to be human

    Family

Love in spite of how one appears

    Corporate corruption

    Government overreach

    Wealth

    Inequality

    Alien invasion

    Military action

    Action adventure

Its nice to see an artist that maintains a continuity of story for their characters. I have seen a lot of artists that are all over the place and have story lines that could never mesh together without a shipping container of superglue and bondo. I know that you get a lot of positive feedback for your images, but I want to applaud you for your ability to tell a story through images that shows a depth that goes beyond the images themselves. I look forward to following the adventures of these two as your story progresses.

I wanted to try to do some dark scenes, and so I rendered this through the glass window of a starship reflections and all.  I was really unsatisfied with the hairstyle I chose for Boyd, as I thought it just looks grassy and the hairline pretty flat.  I then went in and attempted to paint in some temples and sideburns, but its pretty hard when the hair just kind of looks odd like that. So I stuck it in my file of uncompleted stuff, and moved on.

Well, I looked at it again, and thought, hey, it isn't as bad as I thought, so I decided to add it to the thread since I kind of liked it.

I'm looking for a new hairstyle for Boyd, as I'm pretty unhappy with the shaggy weird cut on the rear half which looks odd to me. But so far, no style has looked quite right.
