The only thing I wish...is if I could use the Iray preview. I know it's not a fault of Ultra Scenery, that it's a fault of Daz's programing (or NVIDIA's?) because of the instancing optimization when using the Iray preview...but that's the one thing holding me back from going nuts with this. Even when I limited the scene to the camera, because it was a farily wide camera view, the Iray preview still locked everything up. The preview did come up, but Daz froze out in the end and I had to end task it. I suppose the only thing I can do is render out a small ~1,000px test run to check my lighting, etc and use that in place of the Iray preview. It's just a pain in the patoo. Again, I know it's no fault of this wonderful tool...it's just me whining.

What I do is group all the plants and then hide the group when doing a preview.

That allows me to see how the lighting looks on the land and maybe some of the rocks and logs and stuff.

Oooh, that's a good idea...I'll have to give it a try.

Would that break the build process if you wanted to rebuild your scene?

I don't really understand what I'm about to say, but can't Draw Settings be used to change the optimisation paramters for Iray Preview in the active viewport?

@MelanieL : Iray preview still locks up for me. I might get to see a preview, but DS becomes so unresponsive that I have to end it with task manager.

    So. Much. Fun. :)

And yes..I'm aware that rhododendrons don't bloom in the fall. Just wanted a little pop of color besides green, yellow or brown. LOL. For as much as I have in this (the UltraTree "hero" tree on the left foreground, various extra plants, the bridge, dynamic leaves, vines, insects, a flock of birds, not to mention the deer), all of this fit on my meager 6gb 980ti.

    Amazing :)

Thank you! (I forgot to say that.) blush Setting "Instancing Optimization" to Memory is the recommended setting in the pdf too. When I changed it in render settings, I believe it also changed it in Draw Settings b/c it is set to Memory too.

Lovely scene, AllenArt! It's got a real Autumnal feeling (rhodos and all) - I can almost see the steam from the stag's breath!

ETA: And yes, the memory use is tiny isn't it? I normally render CPU-only because my card is a paltry 2GB for all purposes, but the memory use shown for DS in Task Manager is so tiny for a basic UltraScene that I might switch on my GPU and try again.

Interesting - mine was set to "Auto" when I opened it up, although I had the Render Settings - Optimization at "Memory". Shame it doesn't work. I just started up my render PC and got exactly the same freeze as you mention.

I am also getting the issue that running the script again seems to make all the instances vanish. They are still listed in the Scene panel but do not show in a render.

You didn't hide or delete the actual objects that the instances are based on, did you? If the objects are hidden, instances of those objects won't be visible.

No, the Build script when run for a second time takes hardly any time at all, and then all the instances are no longer visible in a render. I am wondering if when run a second time, it is somehow in the background so it appears to have completed and the DS interface is active, but it is still running away in the background and if I left it long enough, it would re-generate the scene. If I get time, I'll check that.

Ooh, never seen that happen. No if the script is finished it's finished - the only background process it has is the code that draws the heightmap noise which only takes a few seconds.

How was it installed on your machine? Through DIM or SmartContent?

    Installed through DIM.

I am noticing strange behavious after running the script a second time - basically the Viewport is not updating at all. The tabs etc all seem functional but I can't see any change on the Viewport, and when I collapse the tabs on the right hand side (which for my screen partially overlays the Viewport), it looks like they are still there as the Viewport does not refresh. Also when I then close DS it reports a fatal error - I have saved the error log from this if that is useful to either you or Daz.

Man I hate problems I can't replicate... as you can imagine that as I was developing the tool I was constantly re-running the script over and over on the same scene and never saw this problem. I built this product on 4.8 but also tested on 4.12 and really not sure what's going on here.

I would certainly send a bug report with error log to Daz if it's causing lock-ups of the UI/Viewport then throwing errors on close.

I'm uploading an update for the script later today to fix some other problems encountered and will endeavour to have the SmartContent metadata sorted out too.

Sorry I can't be more helpful at this time. Can't help but think it's related to the fact that you are also seeing a problem with the parent objects to the instances not be scaled and moved out of the way. Something in your set-up failing at loading and transforming the models.

What is supposed to happen when we uncheck the water checkbox? I thought I would probably get a dry pond or riverbed. I just did a grassland with pond and uchecked the water checkbox, but I still have water in the pond.

I think it's a relic of a time before I had fully worked out how "Features" were going to work inside the script and it just sort of hung around there and lost functionality over time. I'll get it removed because I think it's redundant now.

Hi! The images in this thread are amazing. And here comes a 'but':

But I'm wondering if there's any chance of an update adding the ability to choose the landscape's area size, and the elevation for self-made height maps? This product is three or four times too large for any scene I normally need. And, elevation is very limited when using your own height map.

My little old machine is super-fast in Iray as long as I keep it simple. Plus, I love simple. This is a beautiful product, but it's too big area-wise, and too shallow height-wise.
    Thanks for listening :-)

Changing the area of the terrain is not feasible in the near term but it is on the to-do list.

You can already change the height/elevation - even when using height maps - by setting the "Max altitude (m)" setting on the Noise tab. I realise it's not super intuitive where it is right now so will do something about that.

Well, I've installed and uninstalled a few time susing connect. Seems like it's still not fully installed. Please see my screenshots and advise of a solution.

If installing through Daz Connect is not working then I advise contacting Daz - there's not anything PAs can do about that. You could try using DIM instead also. An update is being uploaded and I'll try to stress that getting the metadata corrected is high priority too.

Here's my first render with the product.  The little stand-in tree "placeholders" made me think of gaming.  So I tried to go for an RPG kind of idea, with the big statue serving as both a landmark and a warning.

Hello! The script was working yesterday and I was able to build one scene, but today I'm getting a script execution error and scenes aren't loading. I did install/update some other products in between my successful attempt and now. Log of the error is attached!

I'm not sure if it's a problem with the script or if I've accidentally snorked something up.

Since it's a bridge we'll guess that it was one of these new everblooming varieties (although I think those everblooming types are actually rhotodendron - azalea hybrids). Nice render in any case.

What lights are the best to use with Ultra Scenery?

I have tried various HDRI maps, but they does not look right on the render,

so I use mostly just a sun light.

There's an Iray render settings duf supplied with the product which is pretty much what I used to create most of the promos with. Can adjust the time of day or rotate the dome to change the sun angle. I have seen some pretty lovely renders in this thread from people using HDRI though.
