    All of that scares me because I'm overdue for my yearly new hard drive... I usually get a new hard drive early on in the year and dedicate most of it to the previous year... I usually have multiple copies of everything, but sometimes it get hard to find stuff if it's not done that particular way, because I usually resort everything a lot better.

My daughter has a back problem and we've been going to all sorts of specialists and so far because of her age they don't recommend either of the two scenarios you mentioned (SCS and fusion)... Having become fully updated on what's involved in those treatments, I really feel for you man... that's pretty brutal. I hope you are able to find relief soon... real soon. Back pain sucks.

    I love this. I mean, I love when people come up with ideas to make situations work with very limited resources. It makes me feel all like Jell-O pudding on the inside.

    Can you manually turn the blades?... if they are frozen the bearings probably seized... that's not uncommon with energy efficient fans where you have a very small motor that eventually overheats... most modern consumer fans don't have any ports to lubricate the bearings. If tge blades rotate, maybe look and see if there's a How-2 on bypassing the thermostat... I've done it before and it's not that hard (technically... I know you have limited dexterity because of joint problems)... but you seem pretty knowledgeable and mechanically experienced.

    Either way, sorry to hear about that... it sucks that they chose now to die.

    ....sadly, no on the lubrication points. I tried opening it up but the design does not fully allow that. The blades do not rotate at all.  I already looked on the Net for ways to bypass the thermostat but could find nothing for this model

    The  really annoying part is  this is a company that supposedly is supposed to be a reputable brand according to Consumer Reports. Maybe I just got a lemon however this is the second item that crapped out after the warranty expired.

    Why does the fan cost $70? Most of the fans on Amazon seem to cost $40.

    I've got a half-height, dual-fan, window unit for my bathroom.  It doesn't have reverse, but it does have a molded arrow on it indicating airflow direction, and is easily turned around. Which I have done exactly once.  But yeah, also no remote, so there's that.  But since I'm on the ground floor, the window would be easy pickin's for a burgler, so I remove it every night to deter a burgler incursion. (not that we have a lot of burglers around here, but "The times they are a'changin').

    But what I really want is a skinny window fan for a tall, narrow window, for the most appropriate place to put a fan in my apartment layout.indecision

They are generally trustworthy, but for factors like longevity of a product, they'll most likely use methods that accelerate wear and tear... which may not necessarily be the greatest method, but without a time machine, it's usually pretty much the only way to guess at what a product will perform like two or three years down the line... so generally if a product is kinda new, they are probably going to be running or using it based on what they have concluded is a normal amount of usage say in a year, times whatever their lifetime target is... so like if it's something most consumers use say a couple of times a week, they take that total times fifty two...
    Or if the product uses major components that have been around for a while it's based on the past performance of those components... it's not perfect but it gives one an idea... but of course an individual item may be a lemon or been mishandled in shipping or even the company may have changed vendors after a certain point, etc, etc... One of the frustrating things about CR is more often than not, the particular item they tested isn't necessarily available or cheap... I can't count the number of times I've found a good item reviewed, but the only one I can find has a different item or model number... so say the item is fairly new and its model number is #12345 and it's $200, the only item I'll be able to find is #12346... it mostly similar, but the handle looks different and it's a different color... is that the difference or is the motor now different and thus it's not the same?... If I look for it online the only place I'll be able to find that exact model number will be on Amazon or a specialty shop where the price be $300 plus shipping... 

    Thats annoying.

    But generally, if I can get the actual model/item for the target price I usually find CRs findings accurate... and there's another good thing they do, which is update findings...  like for example if they reviewed an item with a Samsung power source and the manufacturer now uses a Crapco adapter, they'll usually note that if it still has the same model number.

    Either way it's still way more accurate than other online reviews... like forget Amazon where people give great reviews because of color or quick shipping... okay, so you are giving it four stars because it arrived on time and not on fire?... great.  Or you are rating it one star because you ordered an indoor product that caught on fire because you used it outdoors and it got rained on...? Ugh. 
     

    Anyway... that was an overly long reply... sorry about the fan and the accelerated wear and tear on your eyeballs.

    So apparently they have these Amazon Vine reviewers. And people don't trust products with zero reviews, so product makers will just send products to these Vine reviewers in exchange for their "honest" review of the product. So now there are hundreds of "honest" reviews of the product from people who received it free. I don't know how one gets on the list to receive the expensive appliances and consumer electronic devices free but I doubt you get there by saying they don't work. Anyway, one of my early experiences with these Vine reviewers is a guy who declared the new Denon receiver was a great product with the one downside being you have to control it with an app on a phone because it doesn't include a regular remote control. Never mind that the remote control can be seen in the pictures. Never mind that I have the same remote control beside me right now. It's as if he did the whole review by reading the promotional material for the device and didn't bother to open the box and look inside. I don't know if it's even possible to set up the app or receiver without using the remote control at some point. Somehow he managed to determine it sounds great though.

    This may have annoyed me as much as the C-NET reviewer who said one of the downsides of the video camera he was reviewing was that it didn't have any manual controls. This, I was reading as I was manually adjusting the focus on the same camera. However, neither of these things annoyed me as much as the Amazon reviewer who declared that the recorder had poor video quality when you set the recorder quality to the lowest setting. Never mind the five other settings. Perhaps the same person turns the television brightness to the lowest setting and returns it to the store because the picture is too dark. Maybe they turn their volume down and complain that they can't hear anything. I don't know.

    It got to a point that I only trust negative reviews if many people have the same complaint about the same thing and none of them have the same writing style. And I don't trust any positive reviews with exclamation marks. If they're this happy!!!!!! over a toothbrush then they probably work for the company who made the product.

    Non-complaint:  After euthanizing my ancient laptop a few weeks ago, I took out its relatively new 500MB SATA SSD and added it to my hoard of used storage drives.  But today, while working on my old HP with the wonky Recovery partition, I discovered, stuck in a nook under my desk, the external 1TB HD (not SSD) that I had used for backups for the laptop.  Wheee..., another used, but empty storage drive for my hoard.yes  I'd rather have a 2 or 4TB drive, but 1TB is still useful.

    Query:  When did 1TB drives become not "big" anymore? indecision

    Complaint:  My landlord hasn't answered his phone in days.  My last rent payment was sent over 3 weeks ago and is still not posted at the bank.  I'm afraid my landlord may be having very serious medical issues, that are keeping him and his wife out of town for weeks.  I don't want to lose this landlord.  A new landlord may not treat me as well.

    ...this is a double window fan with reversible motors. It goes in the window much easier as well as fits much better and more securely in my apartment window than a big box fan and has extenders that seal off the rest of the opening.  Over last couple years it worked perfectly keeping my place cool even during the usual July heat wave we get up here.  It was also nice and quiet in comparison.

    The fans turn freely so it isn't the bearings.  As I mentioned it has to be something in the electronics and my thinking is for some reason the thermostat chip burned out. I have no idea how to fix or bypass that. Again all the panel lights come on when turned on and I can cycle though the thermostat settings, but the fans won't start on any of them, or when the thermostat feature is turned off.  

    Yeah I routinely go to the Consumers Union (which publishes Consumer Reports) site on any major appliance purchase and there were no issues with this reported. During the "cold seasons I keep it unplugged so there wasn't a power spike or anything like that.  

    A total mystery and an inconvenient one with the hottest part of the year here still to come. I bought it when we were still getting stimulus cheques and can't afford such a price hit today on my income..

    I remember when I was working for the multimedia development firm, we had  660 Mb hard drive on which the data would be assembled to send to the CD pressing company.  The thing was literally a "brick" (we affectionately called it the "doorstop")  Back then having a 40 MB HDD in #your desktop was "top end" and they were half the size of a shoebox. (still used 5.25" platters).  When we moved to Windows 3 my desktop got a 115 MB HDD, which was about the size of a pack of cigarettes.  AS time moved on capacity grew and from factor continued to shrink to what smaller than playing card size SSDs we have today.. 

    My old Toshiba Techra had a whopping 2 GB HDD, and the notebook I bought after that had an 80 GB drive..  I thought how was I going to fill that up(?)... that was until I came across Daz.  Ended up replacing that with a 320 GB PATA drive which was the largest of that drive type I could find at the time. .  Today if you have accumulated a lot of content over the years, 2 TB is almost too "small". Crikey when I see compressed files of 1+ GB in the DIM I think about that old Techra, half it's HDD would gone for only one item (and that may be part of a bigger file that required a couple download packages).

    Wondering when we will have to start considering petabyte drives.

    Yeah, a change in landlord or building management is scary.  The  new management company that took over my building seems not to know what they are doing half the time and O feel may be in over their heads which is not good. We don't even get 48 hour notices (which are required by law) about maintenance, inspections and other matters. Instead they use a "24 hour" form and don't post it on people's doors until late morning on the same day. The old management company would give us a minimum of 5 working days, sometimes 10 for any thing that required entry into units.

    Just the other week I got a "final notice" concerning verification my income.  When I brought this up, I was told they sent this as a "general" notice to everyone (thankfully I have a strong ticker).. When I see a "Final Notice" that claims I never replied to previous notifications (a total lie as there were no "previous notifications") and I could be evicted if I didn't comply, that's serious scary stuff.  I've been living here  fo nearly 7 years now never had an issue with the previous management, and never had to deal with this sort of rubbish.

    When I looked them up on the BBB site they had a grade of "F" and reviews from various people were pretty much all very negative. .How are  companies like this even allowed to be in business, particularly one that has to answer to city, county, state, and federal  housing commissions..

    Either way it's still way more accurate than other online reviews... like forget Amazon where people give great reviews because of color or quick shipping... okay, so you are giving it four stars because it arrived on time and not on fire?... great.  Or you are rating it one star because you ordered an indoor product that caught on fire because you used it outdoors and it got rained on...? Ugh. 
     

    Anyway... that was an overly long reply... sorry about the fan and the accelerated wear and tear on your eyeballs.

    So apparently they have these Amazon Vine reviewers. And people don't trust products with zero reviews, so product makers will just send products to these Vine reviewers in exchange for their "honest" review of the product. So now there are hundreds of "honest" reviews of the product from people who received it free. I don't know how one gets on the list to receive the expensive appliances and consumer electronic devices free but I doubt you get there by saying they don't work. Anyway, one of my early experiences with these Vine reviewers is a guy who declared the new Denon receiver was a great product with the one downside being you have to control it with an app on a phone because it doesn't include a regular remote control. Never mind that the remote control can be seen in the pictures. Never mind that I have the same remote control beside me right now. It's as if he did the whole review by reading the promotional material for the device and didn't bother to open the box and look inside. I don't know if it's even possible to set up the app or receiver without using the remote control at some point. Somehow he managed to determine it sounds great though.

    This may have annoyed me as much as the C-NET reviewer who said one of the downsides of the video camera he was reviewing was that it didn't have any manual controls. This, I was reading as I was manually adjusting the focus on the same camera. However, neither of these things annoyed me as much as the Amazon reviewer who declared that the recorder had poor video quality when you set the recorder quality to the lowest setting. Never mind the five other settings. Perhaps the same person turns the television brightness to the lowest setting and returns it to the store because the picture is too dark. Maybe they turn their volume down and complain that they can't hear anything. I don't know.

    It got to a point that I only trust negative reviews if many people have the same complaint about the same thing and none of them have the same writing style. And I don't trust any positive reviews with exclamation marks. If they're this happy!!!!!! over a toothbrush then they probably work for the company who made the product.

    I don't always trust negative reviews because suspicious me thinks they might be from the competition. That said, the first thing I look at is the negative reviews because I want to know the complaints first. Oftentimes I will find a negative review that exposes a flaw I cannot live with. I bought some cages ($150.00 a pop ). . .  (medical housing for birds) and read a negative review about how flimsy they were. I thought maybe this reviewer is the competition, because they look solid and the details infer such. Bought haldf a dozen. They come in a box you have to assemble. And during assembly, I thought these thing seem to be flimsy. After I assembled them and used them for two weeks I sent them back. Took me three hours to, disassemble them, clean them and tear down boxes to fit them. And had to empty dog cages from my van to accomodate the boxes, drive tio UPS and return them. I should have embraced the negative reviews. The cages I was replacing were old and faded and looke weakened, but were far stronger than these by a long run.

    ...well wonder of wonders.

    After looking around on the Net at some troubleshooting ideas, I loosened (sisnt full y remove) a few screws a little in the centre section which houses the circuitry for the controls as well as  where the wiring passes through to first control panel and then to the fans. I then held the start button down for a few seconds to keep the thermostat from kicking in, after which "propped" one of the fans (as was done with biplanes in the old days) using a narrow screwdriver.  On the third attempt, "contact" and both fans started spinning at full speed. so I'll see how long this "gerry rigging" lasts.

    I knew it wasn't the bearings as like I mentioned the fans moved freely and smoothly without the power on and the last time i used it there were no unusual noises that something was amiss.

    Complaint:  When one door opens another closes (or something like that).  Now that you've revived your fan, it's caused my A/C to poop out(quantum entanglement?).  Yesterday wasn't that hot (high 80s instead of mid 90s) but my ancient A/C didn't make much headway with it, because I kept checking on it and listening for it to stop when it reached desired temperature and it never did.  Even last night I had to turn it off to get it to stop trying unsuccessfully to cool.  Opened the window and turned on a big fan.  Temps won't be above the 70s today so I'll survive,... today.indecision  Replacing my A/C was not in my plans this year.  And now that I'm ancient I'll also need to get someone to carry it up the stairs to my bedroom and take the old one away.  And it may even be too late in the season to buy an A/C.  Especially this year with all the hot weather depleting stocks of A/C in the stores.

    Non-complaint:  My symphony buddy called and offered a ride to breakfast next Tuesday.  Wheee..., another day out of the cage.  I've been putting off walking to the local grocery because of the heat & humidity.  So, with a car and a driver I'll get him to take me to a proper city grocery for heavy bulk items like potatoes, onions, milk, hamburg, ham, juices. etc.  Things I can't get delivered.  "Oh happy day", my feet/knees/hips/heart are thankful.yes

    I went to Petco yesterday.  I brought home a bag of aquarium water.  It also had 3 platies in the bag.

    I floated the bag in the tank for a bit afterwards I took the rubber band off the bag and put some aquarium water into the bag.  Just a small cup of water.  The cup used to be a pudding container.

    I left the bag up right and did something.  Probably put that chicken breast into the oven.

    Then I came to check on the aquarium, the bag was now submerged into the tank, but the platies were still in the bag.  I looked at my phone and it was doing a system update.  Before I could take pictures of them "stuck" in the bag, they got out.

    If you do decide to update your A/C, look into the Midea U-Shaped unit.  It is so quiet, and the way it installs, you can open the window if needed/desired without worries!

     I looked at those once, but was unsure if they'd work in my window.​  The only window I have is only abut 6 inches above my bedroom floor.  It's on the 2nd floor, just above the front porch.  The porch roof is also about 6 inches below the window sill.  How does the "U" shaped unit attach to the window or sill?indecision

    I'd like to do an aquarian again. The last time we had one my oldest was just born, so about 26 yrs ago. I always loved them, but we didn't have cats at the time so not sure how they would act with it. The old girl would just sit across the room and think about going over and then go back to sleep and the youngin would probably try reaching in. Apparently Savanna's like to play with water (sure does not like bathes, though.) cause one of her favorite pastimes is to get up on the counter in the bathroom or kitchen and swat the water coming out of the faucet or take a drink.
