I'm happy to help.
I see that you're applying what you've learned to the next render. You've got those cool spooky shadows on the wall from the brazier/torch thing going. I always loved that effect.
Increase the ambient on your flames - they should be brighter.
I see that your scene has ambient light and backlighting (the torches). Now you need a key light - that's your main front light. Add an AoA spotlight on your dwarf - make this one slightly cool-colored to balance the yellow light coming from the torches. Pick your light color near the bottom of the color box at the bottom of the blue area. You want a blue tint but not really blue.
Now depending on how you want the render to look will decide what you do with the shadows. If you position the left side, you will get cool shadows on the right. Or you can position the light in the center and turn the shadows off to just bring up the lighting. Another option would be to lower the shadow strength and/or increase the shadow softness value. Keep in mind that the stronger the shadow softness, the longer it will take to render.
The spider's body seems to be glowing on its own and that doesn't quite fit with the lighting in the scene - unless you want a glowing spider, that is. If you want it to glow, increase the ambient on the abdomen a little bit, then add a pointlight between the belly and the ground.
Glowing mushrooms would add some cool ambiance if you have any or can find a free one. Same as the spider for anything you want to glow - increase its ambient and add a pointlight to light the area around it.
Any of these little lights being in a different color than your overall color scheme will add interest. Purple is complementary to yellow, so that would really make it pop. Blue, red or green will also stand out.
Also, the light in the room behind the doorway is identical to the main scene, so it's hard to tell that's a different area. Change the light there, either darker (which will make it recede) or the color (cool color or gray will also recede).
Ok I will work on those tomorrow as it is late here and I am just off to bed.
For some reason I can not post my renders no matter if I make them smaller or not!!
ok this is so weird as I am not seeing my renders before posting!!
The new theme for next month's freebie challenge
Here is the postworked one:
I had that happen some times now as well, and then I like attached them three times to my post ;)
Now why did they throw away all their clothes to look at that plant? They seem to be really in awe about that, looks cute :D
The new theme for next month's freebie challenge
They threw away their clothes because they wanted to be 1 with nature so Dusk could explain more about nature.
Here is yet another lighting experiment:
Not sure if I have the right kind of lighting for that render or not any and all advice is welcome!!!
Since you asked;) If you light that table lamps so the light falls on her left cheek, it would work as a kind of rim light and add to the depth. It could be enought just to set ambience for the lightbulb to white/100% strength and load a pointlight with no shadows, just to make it render fast. But if you want realism you need to use area light or some other emissive.
I am using 3Delight I forgot to mention that not IRay because Iray causes havic with my laptop when I even try to do a scene in it.
EDIT TO ADD:
The main thing it does is give me a big black screen that I can not get out of until I hard boot my laptop.
Iray can be evil sometimes. I still love playing with 3DL, myself.
Is there a (linear) pointlight inside that lamp? In that case think the lamp shade is blocking out most of the light. While that is what lamp shades do, they also tend to 'glow' a bit with the light coming from inside.
If there is indeed one of those in there, making is stronger (or larger) can help making it look more natural and light more of the scene. You couls also try adding a second, less bright/smaller, more orange one and turn shadows off on that one.
Just some of the things I would play with :)
Hey, Saph.
I put together a little tutorial for applying the water brushes to your dolphin render. I took the liberty of downloading your last render so I can show you. The screen is going to look different because I'm working in Photoshop, but the concept of the brush tool is the same even though the interface isn't. I found this pic showing the brush dialog:
We will be using the following controls:
Opacity: This controls the transparency of the brush.
Aspect Ratio - You can make the brush skinnier vertically or horizontally. This is what it says in the GIMP instructions:
Aspect ratio
This parameter controls the brush Width/Height ratio. A diamond with a 5 pixels radius and an Aspect Ratio = 2, will be flattened with a 10 pixels width and a 5 pixels height (1.0-20.0).
[If this just confused the heck out of you, you're in good company. I made it simple in the instructions below].
Angle - This rotates the brush. You will be using this one to line it up at the right angle. It's in degrees - so think in terms of 360 degrees.
I'm hoping you already know how to add layers in GIMP. So here's how I would do the brushes. The splash brushes you picked out are for smaller splashes, and we need something a little bit bigger. Here, download these:
https://www.brusheezy.com/brushes/12317-brushes-splashing-water
1. Load your render and create a new layer - this is where we will be adding the first brushes.
2. The brush. I picked out this one:
3. Set the brush opacity to 29%, the size to 70 px, color to white. The angle is wrong - change that to 34 degrees.
4. Move the mouse so the brush is over the waterline under the dorsal fin. Tap the mouse and apply the brush. It will look something like this:
5. Tap it a couple more times so we have a few splashes.
6. Now we're going to squish the brush down so it's shorter. Change the Aspect Ratio (here's where I will be guessing because it's a percentage in Photoshop). A value of 2 will make it half as high as it is wide. So try setting this to 2. Angle is the same.
7. Apply the brush a couple of times from the body to the base of the fin.
8. You can zoom out to see how this looks.
SECOND BRUSH FOR THE 3 DOLPHINS
9 Add a new layer.
10. I picked this brush:
11. It starts out vertical and it is HUGE! Reduce the size to 100, Angle to -100.
12. Apply the brush to the back of the closest dolphin a couple of times.
13. In the middle of the dolphin, change the Angle to -97, and tap a few more times. You don't want too much active water here, because these dolphins are not actively balancing like the first one.
14. For the last two dolphins, just one tap with the brush to cover the waterline. That's it. That's all you need.
The brush sizes are assuming that your final render is the same size as the one which you posted - otherwise you will have to make some adjustments. But you should get the idea.
As you can see, the more you apply the brush, the whiter it becomes as the color lays on top of the other.
Thanks so much for all your help Dracorn!!!
Here is another render of my me playing with my AoA lights and also checking progressive rendering witch did not take long to render with that switched on only 35 mins to be exact.
Used: GF1 Dwarfology
Titled: Dwarf Girls Can Have Fun Too!!
This one I am using for this months theme @ the freebie contest!!
Here is the Banner changed it up a bit, did it all in GIMP
Halloween contests are always fun.
Yes they sure are lots of fun!!! :D
That's good
I absolutely love your attitude and contributions!!! Thank you for sharing your explorations. I'm always learning. I'm a little late on this one, but add me to the folks enjoying your dolphins.
Halloween season inspires great renders from you. Looking forward to seeing more.

Just getting caught up!
I had to laught at this one, he wants to show her how to be one with nature. Havne't heard that one before!
Great brush tutorial Dracorn!
I can't help much anymore with 3Delight since I gave in and render almost exclusively in Iray. I wish I had time to play more with 3Delight as I really like the way it looks for fantasy renders.
Your dwarf girl is super cute!
And I love your monster mash render! Halloween is my least favorite holiday but I do enjoy seeing what everyone else does lol!
Finally got the render posted after messing around with it in different ways lol!!
That looks great, Saph! Sclera is a bit bright, but great detail there! I bet she's thinking leave me alone I know what I'm doin
