...woa that's kinda creepy! Surreal, thanks for creeping me out, Saph
I did not realize that would be creepy sorry Sven!!!!
Hey I was (kinda) joking But yeah there's some weird stuff happening in that render, I like that;)
Well I am glad you like it even though it is a bit weird and creepy Sven.
Here is April's Freebie Challenge Poster and Banner!!
Here is another experiment with mood lighting and test of the new Wicked Queen Bundle I got from the bi-weekly Daz Freebies.
Not sure what is going on with her cheek I think I need some help with that!!
Titled: Mary The Mad Queen
Oooh, I like the Wicked Queen. Concept is great, pose is great.
The cheek problem - hmm. When did it distort? When you turned her head? Did it look fine before you posed her?
Lighting - she's a little bit dark, so I have some lighting suggestions - she needs dramatic lighting. I'm assuming you are using 3Delight, it's great for that. So what's the source of that rim light? Is it a distant light or a spotlight? I want to know your setup so I give the best advice.
The rim light is a spectular distant light, it is dark lighting because it is the mood lights I got a while ago from the Daz Bi-Weekly freebies.
Here is another one I did with Fashion lights to brighten her up some to see exactly what is going on with her cheek and it looks to me like it is a part of the characters skin wrinkles.
I also changed the pose to see if it was the posing and it isn't.
HD morphs?
yes I do belive they are.
The spring flowers made me giggle :D
Hey, Saph. I picked up Wicked Queen as well. You are right about the ripples along the jawline - they are part of the morph and not a distortion.
As far as your two renders above are concerned. I like the pose of the first one with the expression of the second.
I've been a little busy, so I haven't been able to get to the lighting - I plan on creating a quick diagram. It might be this weekend.
I can't wait to see the diagram for the lighting, anything that can help me out with my lighting struggles is greatly welcomed!!!
Can you list the light sets you own? Not just individual sets - some environments or even characters come with promo lights. So take a look, because I would like to give some specific info if I have the same set.
If you go to Smart Content, Lights, Interior (or Exterior), you will see the lights that come with your places.
@Saphirewild
A little heads up. There's a nice set of shaderlights coming free with DS, not many people realize that, as they are hidden in your content library:) They look better than the DS standard lights IMO, and you can set the shadow samples for each individual light, meaning for example if you light up some background props or figures you can set a lower shadow samples value for them, thus speeding up rendertimes. And generally I find they render faster than the standard lights. Find them in:
DAZ Studio Formats/ My DAZ 3D Library/Light Presets/DS Defaults. There you have the dz distant, dz spotlight and dz point light, very useful stuff;) They work pretty much the same way as the standard lights, but they override the shadow sample settings in the render settings pane, their shadow samples are set in the parameter pane/light when the light is selected. (This also means you can mix them with the standard lights in your scenes, set the shadow samples for them in the render settings pane.)
Also, if you haven't put the AoA advanced lights in your wishlist, along with the IBL-Master, then do it now
That is a lot of great information I am going to try it out on my next project for sure!
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain it to me
I already have AoA advanced lights in favs and when you started talking about the IBL-Master in the "Show me your 3Delight renders" thread I went and put it in my favs also!!
Great job on the banner and I can't wait to see how your wicked queen turns out once you sort your lighting. I'm not much help at lighting, I admit, I use a lot of light sets lol. I know how to do it, I just don't really like it
I picked up Dreamlight's 3DL lighting tutorial and learned a lot from it. You can do it from scratch, but AoA's Lighting made it so simple, it was my go-to lighting set.
Hey, Sven Dullah - I was playing around with the Shaderlights, and noticed that when I tried to add more than one, the new light replaced the old one, regardless of whether it was distant, spot, etc. I was able to have one shaderlight and 2 regular lights. Not sure if I am doing something wrong.
Oh yeah now I remember:) Save them out as subsets, then you can load as many as you need.
Dramatic Lights for Portrait using Daz Default Lights and ShaderLights
Hey Saph - I have a short tutorial here for your dramatic lights.
I started with the Daz Default ShaderLight Distant Light. This is your Main or Key Light. 3Delight will automatically turn off the camera headlamp as soon as you add the first light. Load it, then change your view to the distant light and move the view to the right, so it lights up the right side of her face and the left is in shadow. Keep your camera position that is facing the left side of her face. My background is just environment with a dark grayish blue.
In the Lights tab, click on Light and set the intensity to 30%, Shadow Type to Ratracyed. Click on Shadowm and keep the intensity at 100% and turn the Softness to 1. This gives you nice soft shadows, great for portraits. However, soft shadows can be grany. Samples are for removing graniness, but I found that I didn't need to increase them.

Next we add a Fill Light. This is a light that is an ambient light, environment light, or a distant light that fills in the lighting where the shadows are just too dark. It also gives a more realistic look than one light alone. I added a Distant Light. In the Light pane, the intensity is set to 2%. That seems rediculously low, I know, but your ambient/fill light needs to be very low for dramatic lighting. Keep Shadow Type to None, and set Shadow Intensity to 0%. This is one of 3DL's great light features, to turn off shadows. This is what makes the light ambient. We're just trying to bring up the light just a little bit to soften those really dark shadows on the left side of her face.

Rim Light
This adds interest, and is especially effective used with dramatic lighting. Create a spotlight, and move it behind her left shoulder. This really has to be behind the figure and just barely peeking around the shoulder to get a narrow rim. Too far to the left and it starts to nullify the shadows. In the Lifht pane, click on light and set the intensity to 10% and reduce the Spread Angle to 30%. I also added a pale blue color: 203 255 248. Shadow Type is None, and Shadow Intensity is 0%.

The Shaderlight appears at the feet of the figure (yellow). The Fill Light is behind the camera (red), and the rim light is behind the figure (green).
OK, great!
Thanks Sonja for the inspiring words, it sure helps me keep going with my rendering I tell ya!!
Yeah Dracorn I have that tutorial but have not watched it since I first did lighting in the Newbie Forum.
He's got a ton of info in those tutorials, but the older ones tended to be a little verbose. He's a lot more direct in the newer tutorials, and the run time is considerably shorter. Same great teaching.
Yeah I know he does and like you say some of it is out dated kinda, I would love to get some of his newer tutorials for sure
Here is my latest render of the wicked queen using yet another test lighting from the mood lighting and of course it is done in 3Delight with no postwork yet.
Titled: Wicked Queen Mary
Hey Saph! That lighting has very nice depth and contrast, well done!
Thanks Sven I adjusted some of the lights like the fill light I set it to 55% intesity and the rim light I adjusted it to 45%.
