    No it is not suposed to be speckled , I am gonna have to redo this one, work on his lighting and such try to figure out how to despeckle the background shadows.

    Here is the updated versions I have been working on and still can not get rid of the grainyness!!!

    Even pumped it up to the set quality 4Hi and still grainy!!

    I used candle light for UE2 and turned down the Intensity to 70% for the last one.

    Edited to Add: I also changed back to the original textures of Johnny's clothing.

    Okay so the best way to get rid of the graininess is just to let the render run longer.  You can go to Render Settings then go to Progressive Rendering and Update Max Samples as far as it will go.  And update the Max Time as far as it will go as well.  Then let it render until the graininess is gone.  Also go into Filtering (also under render settings) and turn FireFly Filter Enable to On.

    You dont' have to let it render the whole time, check on it occaisionally and you can stop it once the graininess is gone.  Good lighting helps but sometimes, you just have to let it render longer.  A lot of darker or night scenes, you can't increase the lights that much, so just letting it go as long as is needed works well.

    I will have to try this... I used to think that grain wasn't a problem but that is no longer the case. sad

    Ya something changed the last update, I've heard that its taking longer for some people.  If I know its probably going to take a while I just crank those two sliders up and leave it to render overnight.  Then I take a good look at it and see if the graininess is gone, if it is, I stop it at that point.

    Another way to get rid of graininess is to go to the Sampling tab on the Render Settings and increase the Pixel Samples and Shadow Samples.  I never had to max them out - usually just squaring the Pixel Samples is fine (i.e., if the default is 4, make it 12).  Shadow Samples defaults at 64, so try doubling it.  This usually worked for me as it was a good balance between clean renders and render time.

    Since UE2 can render slowly, this is why I have been suggesting that you pick up AoA's Advanced Lighting Bundle.  It gives similar results as UE2 and renders fast.  It's on sale again... if your budget can manage it.  I noticed the sale price tends to be the same when it goes on sale, so save up for it if you don't have the cash right now.

    I wanted to make sure you saw this comment which I put on my Tips:

    As far as color is concerned, I like your choices.  You've got some very nice soft shadows here - it's lookin' good.

    One more tip, see if you can tilt his right knee down a little for a more relaxed look.  You might need to adjust the posing limits to do it.

    Hey Saphirewild -

    That render is looking pretty good.  I like the background and the oddity of the story.  Like, what's a guy with a beautiful truck like that doing in the middle of a ruined city... and where the HECK did that gorilla come from???!  Pretty funny. 

    One thing I noticed - the sky and the background fit very well together and the bright red truck jumps out a little too much.  Because the color is so bright in relation to the background, it doesn't quite fit. 

    There are a couple of ways to make adjustments.  Perhaps the most simple is to modify the light pointing head onto the truck by adding some blue/gray to neutralize it a little.  In your color picker, choose blue but down closer to the bottom where it's a little gray.  You can even make the color slightly darker.  You just want a touch here.

    Another way is to put it into GIMP and desaturate the colors a little.  This will affect everything unless you use a mask.

    Here is yet another experiment with IRay I had gotten the creature creator for M4 and wow am I gonna have fun with experimenting with it!!!

    Hi Saphire, Wow ! your progressing quite well at a rapid speed, as always a ton of great fun renders to view.  I enjoy viewing them all.  Mr. Evan would be a cool rocker for one of my rendered drumkits.  Keep up the fab work, will visit again soon.  Cheer :)

    Hi Saphire, was about time I hit your thread again, so I found this experiment with the UE lights. I don't own the candle light for UE2 buit my experience with UE2 in general is thet its easier ( and less grainy) to use in combination with a spot light or a distant light. graininess often means there is not enought light to get the calculation done properly. then again there are some parameter you can adjust to increase the quality pf the UE itself. So when you look into your light Tab presets you will find those teapot icons in grey starting with " Set quality ..."  you can apply one of those to your canlde lightand to get rid of graininess you choose 3Hi or 4xHi. a warning ahead, that will increase rendertime!

    Apart from that I would actually suggest some additional spots or Linear point light to make the setting more interesting. Right the light is rather evenly distributed wich is the basic quality of UE2, what I frequently use is two lights (distant/spot linear point) plus the UE2 base at 30 %. for test renders I leave the quality low but for the final the occlusion smaples need to go up to 64 or even 128 other parameters ajust as needed.

    Thank you so much for the amazing advice Linwelly, I am gonna take this back to square one and redo it with the setting you suggest and hopefully it helps with the grainyness.

    I like that background! Real old-time circus or travelling carny feel to it... btw we actually have one of those tomahawk weapons in my family. I'm not sure of its provenance but generally speaking, you want a lot of dirt and rust... think "Parkside Freight textures" here. There are also Iray shaders, like by Jen Greenlees, that do "old metal" quite well.
