    Wow isidorn looking really good, puts my first few attempts at using the atmocam to shame :) 

  • Greetings!  I have been away and have a question.  Can you submit the same entry in this contest as well as the 13th Anniversary Contest?  Would also like feedback on the attached.  Thanks!  smiley

    I like the more greenish one seems more natural.

    Hi Giovanni, to your question. No you can not use the same entry. Needs to be new. As to comments about the attached image. I think I would turn the guy around to face the subject on the alter. Make the elements react more together to help tell a better story.

    isidorn, I would encourage you to ask yourself what is the story I am trying to tell here from that you will know which one is better.

    AtmoCam seems like one of those tools that can be finicky. You just can't plop it in a scene and assume its going to make it great. But with a some work it really can make an image come alive.

    Yes it definitely seems to need some practice with. If I had more time I'd fiddle some more with it in my image because I would have liked some more distinct god rays. But further practice for me with the AtmoCam will have to be with another render some other time.

    @ isidorn - I like the green version too.

    @ countryhillcreations - you've got a great scene but the render needs to run longer or maybe its a lighting issue. I see a lot of grain in the shadow areas; the main woman's arm, the shadows in the doorway, the shadows behind the shutters...  Maybe a fill light would help with that? I wish I had more technical knowledge but I don't - but that's what I would do to fix that, add a dim light not to knock out those shadows but to help the render.

    Looks like tomorrow is the last day for entries, so I wanted to stop in and wish everyone good luck :)

    You've all done some very nice work, so picking a winner won't be easy this time around.

    Mhh, for me, the first pic has a greater atmosphere than the last two. In your first try, there is a mystic touch in the air. All looks foggy and the environment get lost in the mist, also the bridge crosses a dark ravine, whats looks very cool.
    But thats a personal thing and how you see, many other people prefer the green version. ;)

    It is an amazing tool, like you say though it really pays off to toy around with settings etc to really enhance your render in the way you'd like - I love it and after some crazy "I MUST have GOD RAYS!!" (see attached render showing Skyler's more..... scary side) I settled down to using it for more subtle atmospheric renders like my first entry for this competition!

  • Title:  I See You In Midnight Blue

    Software:  DAZ Studio 4.8

    Postwork: none

    The family of rabbits stayed in the tree all day for safety.  Now day has turned into night time, and a shroud of darkness has befallen.  Outside, rain is falling heavily, each rain drop glistening in the bright moon light.  The baby kits have retreated further back into the shadows where they sleep till morning.

    All along, I wanted to work on a night scene but found initially it was better to light the scene in daytime in iray.  Then once I had that, I sould start converting the scene to night with as much atmospheric conditions as I could use.  This is my first attempt ever at adding rain, fog, clouds and mist to any scene I have created.  I really appreciate the information you guys have posted as I went carefully through the different techniques suggested.  

    Here are some of the tasks I worked on to get to where the scene is now.  I took my background and in PS I converted it from daytime to night.  I grabbed a dark sky with bright moon from free image source online.  I had never done this before but it turned out better than I thought.  I love the way iray can be setup as an emitter and will enable an image to become a light source.  I then added many planes in the scene for the rain drops.  This took a LOT of experimentation.  Getting the scale right was tricky.  I have also been trying diffferent settings for the temperature, emission strength.  I still may lower the brightness of the drops although it does give a ethereal feeling to the image I think?  Then I added some fog/mist as I think that there would be some of this kind of hanging around.  A muggy, dampness to the air.  This was using another plane.  I then felt I needed a "blanket of mist" that would lower the moonlight intensity a bit.  This was with multiple atmosphere cubes of progressive intensities going into the distance.  

    During and after all these were added I continually updated iray parameters and performed quick test renders.  Unfortunately, my laptop is not as powerful as I would like, but it does have an nvidea graphics module.

    This is very interesting. If you could somehow get little circular ripples in the puddling water in front of the den, that would really sell the rain. If the puddling water is a separate object, you might be able to create a normal map for it, or perhaps a displacement map. I've experimented with these and have had mixed results, but when it works (i.e. I didn't screw it up) it can produce a really cool effect. Not sure if there is something in the market that could do it.

    You've got some of the rain drops going in different directions, perhaps a few more. Perhaps also some more variety in the size of the drops.I think you are right about the knocking down the brightness of the drops a bit - especially if you vary it on each plain. You've got a pretty cool sense of depth there with the rain drops. To me this looks like it is right on the edge of being spectacular.

    I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

    Thank you for the excellent feedback!  I have redone the rain accordingly.  I added a whole bunch of splash circles to the scene also.  They are .individual OBJs which took a bit.  I will likely keep experimenting with the rain-circles.

  • I fixed a few things in my first scene.  The baby rabbit's head was more like a rat so I fixed it in PS as that was a problem with the figure itself.  I also added a highlight to the left bunnies eye.  Lastly, I made the round tail look softer and got rid of the edges it had.

  • Just wanted to leave some notes here outside the entry thread about my latest piece. Having had a bit more free time this month, i revisited the idea of Superman fan art going through  few different ideas before mixing and matching enviroment parts. Atmosphere was a very challenging concept to wrap my head around. I ended up going the Uber Volume route, its used in the background corridor to represent dust in the air from wall smashing. Render times were quite long until i reduced the scene to the bare minimum of what was needed.

    The entry thread has filled up nicely this last week, although still a bit shorter than last month. Maybe a more difficult concept this month? I know it sure was for me.

    also these effects take forever to render. I have about 50 hours invested in the one I was working on.I never got mine done because of the long render times and the amount of fixing it was going to need to be presentable.

    I had over 100 hours invested in last months DOF contest because of the long render times with that effect as well. I also had issues with fireflies on one of them and had to learn how to deal with them along the way :)

    still, this one has been interesting and I see lots of great work being done.These contests are a great way to learn new stuff.I can find my way around the program pretty good, but that doesn't mean I'm very good at the art part of it yet :P

    This contest is fun and frustration in one. It's cool to explore DAZ, but it's also a pain in the ass to see after hours of render, that a setting not do the things i wish it should do. My wife gets the crisis, when she see, that i start DAZ in the evening She knows... now he is busy for hours *gg*

    I did another render with increased resolution.  I fixed a few things in PS, the shape of the rabbits profile was off in a few places, and smoothed the droplets a little bit.
