Non-photorealistic Renders (NPR)

  • Hey mike, wow that was a long time ago. I cant imagine how hard it must have been to render back then. The first poser I got was poser pro 2014. I was actually trying something in the intro I only rendered every 3rd frame. I think it might have been better if I rendered every other frame instead. I felt it gave a more anime style.

Hi Walt, all animation was done in poser pro 11. More and more I am no longer using the spline interpolation but instead use the constant selection and move the character pose to pose. I animated her to a reference video. The skin shader which I use on all my characters in the basic cartoon/toon shader in the materials in the poser content folder that comes with poser. I made one change. It has edge blend which does not look as good at certain angles. Now poser 11 has geometric edge lines which work great at all angles and can be modified by material group and also can be animated. For example extremely close to far away the thickness can be adjusted acordingly. Edge blend was good in prior versions but I really like poser 11 new edge lines. I think that is one tool that really makes poser work well for this style.

I then render png sequences in seperate layers. background is rendered in firefly the foreground and vehicles rendered in open gl preview render and finally the character also rendered in open gl preview. Sometimes I will render the character in b&w then color without line and multiply the 2 layers if I need to correct a line. Then I import all images into final cut pro x and composite (layer) them there. Finally I and a little blur and shadow on the cars a little diffusion on the whole scene and adjust the color to my liking.

One good thing about this workflow is that renders are very quick. The longest it takes to render a frame is about 30-45 seconds for the firefly background. (I only use one diffuse ibl light). Open gl renders about 1-2 sec. This particular sequence was 800 or so frames. I did the character animation and set up the background in one day. Rendering and everything else in a second.

David: Yes, it was very time consuming and the render times were verrrrrrry slow. That's probably why I only made the one video – weel, that and the fact that I really don't have a video series in mind. I prefer to work in print, as you know.

Poser 11 does have the best geometric edge capabilities right now. Carrarra is possibly second (and, of course, I'm talking about the entry-level consumer tools we are using – I'm pretty sure Maya and Lightwave have amazing capabilities, but they're out of my budget ad sphere of influence). Thanks for the detailed workflow. I hope it will help people remember that approaching images (both static and moving) as layers is really the key to speed and good results.

If you all are interested, there are some free toon/anime skins and eyes at SHARECG.com for G3M and G3F.  The author says they work for G8F too.  I downloaded them last night but I haven't tested them yet.

Another Carrara job. Same poor lot as last night.... Dangerous job being a Bosun. I treated the candle differently. Thanks for the c an c on the previous image !

Carrara render passes (about ten) plus a ToonPro 111 pass. Postworked in topaz simplify and impression. Attached is also two of Carrara render passes (covverage and toon pro 111) joined up.

I love this image!  Nice illustrative effects.  It does not look like a render which is really good.

This is a straight up Iray render no post work.

    Superb render!  :)

This is one I made just a few weeks back using one of the comics methods I adopted.

It relies on compositing 2-3 renders together in Photoshop/GIMP. The background and laser effect was postwork.

The text is also done in Photoshop, even though I would normally do it in Illustrator.

I started a channel and put up a YouTube video on how I made this one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4Y6eN4Wr78

A bit long, but it's an inaugural effort so I plan to get more efficient/brief :P

And just like an Oscar's speech, I gotta thank @mmitchell_houston for inviting me over here...thanks, man I appreciate it!

I love this!  Very nicely done!

Man, you guys have been busy.  There were over 200 posts to get through since the last I was able to catch up with the thread.  It's nice to see the NPR thread getting so popular.

  • I just got some cool news. My Ms. Marvel image was selected as a "Staff Pick" for "Image of the Week" over at Renderosity.

Quite an honor, especially when considering the quality of the company I'm in.

I'm actually amazed, as I didn't put in nearly the work on this that it desrved (I need more blue in the mask, hair and the line on the boot closest to the camera really needs to be thicker). Oh well! A pat on the back is a nice thing, especially since it happened on my birthday (...hmmm, wonder if there's a connection?).

Congrats man.  I've never uploaded anything at Renderosity because I found their process a pain. LOL!

Congratulations, mmitchell_houston, and do not forget, that you will get render reward points for each uploaded image to the gallery at Renderosity.

Thanks. I always do forget about those new "Render Rewards." I've been uploading art there since 2003, so i never really think about that stuff. Whenever I have somethig I want to share, up it goes! Kinda the same here, although I tend to limit my gallery to pieces actually created in Daz Studio. Over at R'osity, I post anything and everything, including photos.

Thanks, and I guess I'm used to it. I actually find it a little easier to upload there than I do here at Daz...

    And thank you very much!

Very nice render, the render style itself has a very animated feel to it; is that the default render style, or a preset, or did you have to change a lot of settings to achieve it?

Thanks a lot, Walt. This was made in iClone 7 Pro, with its toon settings, and then in Photoshop

I have applied Topaz Clean filter and then Filter Forge Vibrance.

Below is a screenshot from iClone 7 Pro of the scene.

I like the results you're getting with this effect. I'm not familiar with the iClone product, so thank you for sharing the screenshot above with us.

Another team up.  I was just experimenting with some stuff I downloaded and it turned into a full blown render.  I think I'm going to buy Topaz Simplicity this weekend.  I miss it.

Looks like you're having fun, awesome!

I hear ya on Topac Simplify, I'm currently using a PhotoShop action that includes Topaz Clean, Simplify, and some other PhotoShop actions that I wouldn't give up for anything.

Thanks a lot. I am a long time user of iClone (from 2008, when I have bought iClone 3 from Daz3D store),

but were not impressed with its rendering possibilities, unil now. Toon renderer in iClone was there quite a long time,

but I have forgotten about it, while using Daz Studio frequently nowadays.

On the other hand, there are opinions, that the new Blender (2.80 series) with Eevee PBR renderer will become

    strong competition to iClone.

Thanks. Yes, I like this toon output from iClone, even more with this new version of iClone 7.

A good day for art.  I found a free comic book script for Photoshop that I can't wait to experement with and I got two new art books.  Unfortunanty, I'm being draged to the beach tomorrow, so no renders until later.  Happy rendering everyone.
