Products not in Smart Content
Hi, I've bought several packages recently that don't appear in Smart Content. They appear in the Content Manager as 'installed', the files exist on disk, and when I reset the database and reload the metadata from within DS I can see the products listed.
However, if I create a new workspace with nothing in it, a search for the packages in Smart Content shows nothing. If I load Genesis 2 Male, select the figure, and look at wardrobe, they do not appear. Two examples of what I mean are
Christopher for Regency
Fitzwilliam for Regency
The same is also true of a number of pirate and Viking packages I have bought recently.
Thanks,
Valkeerie

Most older items do not have metadata and will not show up in smart content, but newer items should. With older items I mean items for M4/V4 and older.
That is what Smart Content is supposed to do, it will only show you items that can be used on the figure that you have selected, so items for M4 or V4 will not show up when Genesis 2 Male is selected.
You should see all of the content in Smart Content with NOTHING selected in the Scene pane.
These items do show up in metadata and are sold as expansions for Gen 2 base products - e.g. 'requires Regency for Genesis 2 males'. I can verify they show up in the metadata when I reload the Smart Content database.
If they don't appear in Smart Content, what is the best way to browse them?

If you read my post again you will see that I have a new empty scene with nothing selected and still don't find the products :-)

I did read your post correctly I think :)
As long as you know how it is supposed to work, that's fine.
Did you install these items using DIM (DAZ Install Manager), if so, if you look in the installed tab, all items that have Metadata are marked with a checkmark. If there is a checkmark opposite these two items, then there is a problem with the Metadata not appearing.
Is there a checkmark in the DIM Installed tab?

Yes, the Install Manager lists the items and there is a check mark. If I go into the Smart Content, reset the database, and reload all the metadata, I can see the items listed in the metadata. So yes, there is a problem with the metadata not being displayed in Smart Content, and as a relatively new user I don't know any other way to browse the many items of wardrobe and materials.
There has been some excellent deals on historical clothing recently, and I bought quite a lot, and was mystified as to why half the stuff I bought is invisible, the other half is fine. If products are old M4 products they should be clearly listed as such, and not listed as Gen 2
.
Thanks,
Valkeerie
Texture sets for clothing won't show up in Smart Content unless you have loaded and selected one of the clothing items that those textures are designed to work with.
For the Regency textures, that would mean this:
http://www.daz3d.com/regency-genesis-2-male
or the M4 version (though I don't know if metadata exists for that one...if not, it wouldn't show up in Smart Content at all): http://www.daz3d.com/regency-for-michael-4
Similarly, if you want to see textures for Viking clothing in Smart Content, you'd first need to load one of the items from the Viking outfit. If you want to see textures for the pirate clothing, you'd first need to load an item from one of the pirate outfits.
It does say they are compatible with Gen2 Male, but it looks like the Metadata has not been updated for that.
All content that you buy from the store, will be listed in the Content Library pane, no matter if it has Metadata or not. M4/V4 and earlier figures, are in Poser Format (CR2) and will be found in Content Library > Poser Formats > My DAZ 3D Library > Figures. You will also find the clothing in there as well.
Materials sometimes have DS mats in the DAZ Studio Formats area, others are only in Poser Formats. In DIM in the Installed tab, select the item you are looking for, right click on it, and select 'Show Installed Files', that will tell you where the various items have been installed to. These are also clickable links, which will take you to the actual folder where they are stored.
Hope that helps a bit more.
Thank you for your suggestions. It is the complete inconsistency that is baffling me - viz, with nothing selected I can see and browse Sensibility for G2F, and both expansion texture packs, but for many similar packages I see nothing. In the example given I don't need to load a wearable to see the textures - I can browse the packages as they were sold, and see all the materials, poses etc.
Valkeerie
If you're referring to Sensibility Expansion 1 and Sensibility Expansion 2, those aren't texture packs but additional clothing items (plus textures for those items) designed to work with the Sensibility dress. But that having been said, yes, there is some inconsistency, and it wouldn't surprise me to find some exceptions to the general rule (that you need to have a clothing item selected to see texture expansions show up in Smart Content).
Edited to add: it sounds like you've got Smart Content set to view by product rather than viewing by file. If that's the case, when you have nothing selected you should see products that contain props or figures, and once you click on that product you'll see all the related files, including textures and poses. You should not see products that contain ONLY textures or ONLY poses. But again, it wouldn't surprise me if there are some exceptions...
I may have discovered the answer to my own question ... by accident. The content I have been unable to find appears if I select 'Presets',
and under 'Presets', 'Materials', but the key step is to select the 'Surfaces' tab and not the ]'Smart Content' tab. Of course I also have to type the package ident in the search box. Somewhat unintuitive, but I'm relieved to find all that content (there's a lot of it - some dozens of purchases).
Valkeerie
Thanks again. You are correct, I'm tending to view by product, as I bought a lot recently and it seems to be the only sensible way to preview the items intended to work together as an outfit. The file view is looking a bit crazy. From a novice perspective I expect products to appear, even if they are material packs - they appear in the metadata as a product, and lots of products that do appear in Smart Content contain mixed contents - wardrobe, accessory, material, pose, light etc.
Anyway, it appears that some products only appear under "Surfaces". I expect there will be more gotchas :-)

Hi,
I'm having the same problem with my "Smart Content" tab in that it won't display products/files I've bought from the DAZ website. The files do have the metadata check mark, and if I try to re-import the metadata to the tab it does list them there as options to re-import, but after the import they still don't show up.
For some reason DIM seems to like burying some new products away in the Content Library where they're quite hard to find.
I'll give you an example: I just purchased http://www.daz3d.com/iggy-hair-for-genesis-and-genesis-2-female-s and installed it with DIM. DIM says Iggy Hair has metadata associated with it, but it just will not show up in the "Smart Content" tab, no matter what is loaded into the scene. I have to go digging around in the Content Library every time I want to use it.
I'm not averse to the Content Library, but it isn't very good for browsing and it can sometimes be difficult to find stuff in there.
Does anyone know why this is please?
** I never view by product - always by file.
I would have thought that the Iggy hair could be found in People > Genesis 2 Female > Hair easily enough. It is made for Genesis (original) as well, so that may be a problem. In DIM, select the Installed tab, right click on Iggy Hair, and select 'Show Installed Files', that will tell you where DIM has installed them to.
You could also use Products, under 'I' for Iggy, and it should show up there too. Also, the search option in the Content Library pane should also find it easily enough.
I don't have this item, so I don't know where it would appear in Smart Content, but you would need to have Genesis 2 or Genesis selected in the Scene pane for it to appear there.
Thanks for your reply and suggestions.
The bit above is not entirely true. As long as you have nothing selected in the screen pane, then everything in the Smart Content tab will show up.
Anyway, yes its actually found under People > Genesis > Hair > Goldtassel > Iggyhair. But that isn't really my point. I can find it by name in the Content Library if I'm specifically looking for it, but if in a few months time I'm creating a new character and decide to browse hairs in my Smart Content tab, then because it doesn't show up there I might forget I've got it.
Products under 'i' for Iggy doesn't show it either.
With this example its not too much of a hardship because, as you say, the location in the library is fairly intuitive. But thats not always the case - especially with a lot of 3rd party content.
I'm not particularly a big fan of the Content Library, because stuff seems to get deposited in there at random sometimes. Is it easy enough to sort it according to where you want everything? It doesn't mess anything up if you start moving files around does it?
You are correct, of course, all Smart Content will show up with nothing selected, but there again, you are in the same position as in using the Content Library pane, you have to find what category it is under. With Hair that should be easy though (hopefully). I just wanted to make sure that you weren't expecting it to show with the wrong figure selected.
By far the best way of keeping track of your content, is to use Categories, you can then place items in categories that make sense to you, and store materials along with the figures they are intended for, not in separate folder (Poser Format)
There is a youtube video on this by adamr, and I'll see if I can find you a link.
Thank you! Yes, that would be ideal. At the moment my Content Library content is scattered to the four winds and its a nightmare trying to remember where everything has installed to, or what I even have lol. If I could just put it all into folders that made more sense to me, then it'd all be a lot easier to handle and as easy to browse as the Smart Content tab.
So the stuff in your Content Library doesn't have to be in particular folders then? You can move the files around and everything still works?

Categories can be arranged and named however you like, which is what I do. Moving the folders around on disk can break things if not done correctly.
Here is the link to the youtube video from AdamR as promised :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_nnPf8nCcc4
As Mike says, moving things around on disk can be fraught with danger if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Using the Categories as Adam shows in his video, does not 'move' anything, it just makes it available through the database, and it gives great control over content.
You MUST remember to export user data from the drop down menu in the Content Library pane, especially after adding a lot of new categories, that way, if something nasty happens to the db, it can be recovered, and re-imported again.
Ok, cool. I'll take a look at that video. Thank you guys, you're stars! :D
(I've actually got another issue to ask about, but I'll start a new thread for that because its a completely different topic).
I just bought and installed Iggy Hair for Genesis and Genesis 2 Female(s) and the problem is most of the items are not categorized:
Iggy Hair for Genesis (1 item) and it's materials (6 items)
Iggy Hair for Genesis 2 Female Hair (1 item)
If you assign categories for them the product and its contents will show both the Smart Content Products and Files tabs. The Iggy for Genesis 2 Female(s) is also not showing in the Products "I" listing, but that isn't a factor in it not appearing in Smart Content.
I'll file a Problem Ticket to get it fixed.
edit: Problem ticket submitted: 18038 11/16/2014
edit: Added to Problem ticket: Iggy Hair for Genesis 2 Female product type needs to be changed from "Materials" to "Hair" which fixed the problem of not showing up in Products "I" listing.
I have installed DIM & DS 4.6 - and they seem to work fine.
Every product seems to show in the Installed panel, and I can find the files in the Manifest folder.
The only problem seems to be that some of the products that do install with DIM do not seem to make it into the DS library panels.
For instance:
Garden pond https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_2697
World Gardens Japan https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_8813
show as "DIM Ready" on the product pages, do download and install using DIM, but they don't show up in either the Smart Library or the Content Library...
Is there any way to fix this? I'm sure these are not the only MIA's in the list.
If I download the zip files manually, then install them to a new path that I set up in DS, will they act like non-Smart products
Also - on the product page where it gives me the option of download & install using DIM, I get an error page...
What's going on there? I get this on every product page!
Edit: Where do I find the version loaded in DIM and DS? I see no "Ready to download" for them, so can I assume I have the current ones?
Something being DIM-ready isn't the same as being set up properly to use Smart Content. DIM only needs the item set up properly in a .zip file for installation, Smart Content needs a certain file in the .zip file with data for the Smart Content settings — it's been a big job doing this for all the thousands of items in the DAZ store, and it isn't finished yet.
The thing to remember is that Smart Content, despite the name, is not a view of your content files. It's a filtered and sorted view of a database of links to your content files. No data, no links, no Smart Content view. The Content Library is split into different sections, the ones for DAZ|Studio Format and Poser Format do show every product that's been properly installed into your content folder.
Also, these are quite old products, so they will not have DAZ|Studio files unless they've been recently updated, they will be all Poser files. Where have you been looking in the Content Library tab? Anything with Poser-only files will be found in the Poser format section of the Content Library, you will not find them in the D|S formats section.
I just noticed, World Gardens Japan isn't for Poser, it's a Carrara only item, and you've only mentioned using DAZ|Studio. Do you use Carrara?
OK, I can see how "DIM-ready" isn't "Smart Content", but shouldn't it at least show up in the Content Library?
I search for "World Gardens" & "Garden Pond" - and nothing comes up in the Content Library.
If I search for "World" & "Garden" & "pond" other products are shown, but not the two I am looking for.
Yes, I have Carrara - don't use it much. Do I have to use the manual download to open that (the downloaded & installed files won't load into Carrara)?
From the Product page it looks like "Garden Pond" should be a DS product...I reloaded the content meta files, it still doesn't show - I saw it on the readout.
Just so I am clear, should ALL DAZ Studio products be shown at least in the Content Library? If not, is there any way to load them?
Thanks.
Edit: Also, are some of the products only in Poser format - Ps - so I need to include Ps formats in my DIM filters?
Yes, the Content Library does not rely on Metadata at all, so everything will appear there, assuming that you have the paths setup correctly in Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager. DIM by default, installs to :
C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library
DIM does not communicate with DAZ Studio, so you need to make sure that the above path is listed as BOTH DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats in the Content Directory Manager.
I have Garden Pond, and it is installed into Poser Formats > My DAZ 3D Library > Props > Scenery in the Content Library. I was able to find it fairly easily by lookin in the DIM Installed tab for the product, right clicking, selecting 'Show Installed Files'. These are also clickable links to take you to the actual folder.
An even easier way is to type 'Pond' in the search box at the top of the Content Library pane, or simply use the 'Products' category in the Content Library under 'G' and you can even load it from there.
Garden Pond does not have Metadata, so wont show in Smart Content.
I don't have the World Gardens, so I cannot check that.
You don't need to include Poser in your download filters -- if the Poser version is the best one to use in DS, then it will show up if you have DS in your download filters.
Yes, I am using C:\Users\OrcaSoul\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library and that seems to be active.
As far as finding "Garden Pond" in the Content Library, I do now find it under "g", but it doesn't bring up anything that will load the product.
OK, thanks.
Did you look in the Content Library pane in Poser formats as I explained above?
There is something wrong with your Metadata, one of them has a yellow exclamation mark, and the others do not have any icons. In the dropdown menu in the Content Library pane, select 'Content DB Maintenance' and tick the box 'Re-import Metadata' to see if that fixes it. If not, you can use the Reset Database option, which restores it to it's default state, and then reimport the Metadata again.
If you have any categories that you have created yourself, those will be lost, so try reimporting metadata first on it's own.
EDIT:
The yellow exclamation mark may also indicate orphaned file references, to you could try that as well as reimporting metadata
