Lost some files and my Content Library Tab
I don't know what happened but some glitch and I lost the tab to look through my content library and cant find how to get it back.
Also is there a link to somewhere that shows the folder type organization in the daz program folder? I have a ton of different folders in there with content that doesn't show up and am figuring it needs to go in a specific place but cant seem to find any info on the proper folder layout.
using window 64 version on windows 7
thanks in advance

If you go to Window > Panes (Tabs) > Content Library, you should get the window back. You can dock it anywhere in the interface.
You should not have ANY content in the Program Files folder? Are you sure you mean the DAZ Studio program folder, or do you mean the library content folder?
What folders are they that you are worried about, and can you please post a screenshot of the problem?
ok I got the tab back up here is a screenshot I circled a few items im wondering about maybe there re others there but the ones i circled i see in runtime folder and not sure if they sb in the data folder or where
What folder is this exactly? It appears to have some content in it, as well as folders that should be in the Program Files folder.
ImageFormats for example, should be in Program Files, as should Displays and Phonon_Backend.
Folders like 'Runtime' and 'People' should be in your content folder, called 'My DAZ 3D Library' if you install using DIM (DAZ Install Manager) or 'My Library' if you had an earlier version installed. It all looks a bit of a mess, and as you are using Win 7, you definitely do NOT want to keep user content in the Program Files area, it should be in Documents at the very least.
Can you post a screenshot of your Content Directory Manager, with the expanded listing for DAZ Studio and Poser Formats?
You can find it in Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager.
not sure what you mean abt program files as all those files are in program files/ Daz 3d / Daz Studio 4
I was hoping it would all show up in my smart content tab but doesnt seem to be so thats why i was wondering if there was a guide somewhere showing a folder arrangement so I know where to put things. Like I was also getting for example clothing showing up in my figures folder
Click the arrows next to "DAZ Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats" to see the paths that DAZ Studio is looking for content in.
Any folders under "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" are protected folders in Windows 7/8/Vista, so you should not install content there. That is for the application, not for content.
When you install content, you should install it to it's own location. It appears that you installed some content into the same folder that you installed DAZ Studio in.
I would suggest you try to identify the content that is installed in the wrong place (perhaps by looking for readme files that might have the product name in them), then reinstall it somewhere else. (You could then delete the content you moved from this location, however if you are concerned about accidentally deleting something important that really should be there, it probably isn't doing much harm other than wasting disk space where it is, and you could just ignore these extra files.)
If you only have a single content folder, you would want to install it there. In your screenshot, you need to click the '+' icon in front of "DAZ Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats", which will expand them into the list of all the content folders you have mapped for each of those types of formats. (ex: see my screenshot showing part of the expanded "Poser Formats".) If you aren't familiar with this, you'll probably have only one or two, and those will be the file paths you want to install into.
When you install content, are you using DIM, or manually installing via the exes and/or zips? The process you need to install correctly will vary slightly depending on how you are doing it.
Mike beat me to it Don't Install content to Program Files...EVER. Reinstall your content to any folder you like on what ever drive you like and call it what you like, just not in Program Files. There is nothing wrong with the order of the folders just the place. :)
PS and beaten by Sean Riesch too. Man I am off to bed. :P
thanks guys for replying
I used some exes and they sent it to the program files place so the ones that dont have installers I was just putting them in the same place
so if I ? and will all that stuff show up in my smart content folder? I like the smart content folder for navigating because it is so much easier for me
Ok before I move folders what are the base folders that sb in the daz prog file dir so I dont move the wrong one
I wouldn't Move I would reinstall unless all your scene folders are in Duf format then you could move them and still be able to open your scenes but not guaranteed though.
Oh and EXE's are always customisable in where they will install things, always. Are you computer savvy?
Here is a screenshot of the default content installation path with how the folders are set but as I said earlier put it where you want. But wherever you put it you will need to insert the new path in to the EXE's install window when it reaches that part of the installation.
ok thanks I wasnt sure what should have gone into the data folder for daz or what. my next for the poser files will be to figure out which go to which so i dont have clothes showing up with figures. I think I have enough to clean it up tonight. I just did a fresh reinstall because of some bugs I had with genesis not seeing something in the figures and just had square blocks showing up. so now I made a my library folder in C drive and will copy the folders not supposed to be there into that then spend thousands of hours cleaning it up lol then back it up for next time need to reinstall
thank you all for your help all these files and where they go is so confusing.
oh and yes I am pretty computer savvy
As far as I know all Poser content goes into he Runtime folder. I have got Poser installed on this new rig yet so I can't check but from memory I think that is right.
If zipped Poser content is setup properly all you need to do is to merge the Runtimes. If it is Daz3d Zipped content then everything inside the main folder inside the zip called "Content" should go directly in to you Main Content folder. In essence the folder called Content is the same as my example above called "My Daz3D Library" just a different name that is all.
The reason I asked if you were savvy was to know how much info you would need or not need in this case. Some of the older Exe's will not have a Browse button for the installation path but does allow CTRL+C and CTRL+V to copy and paste the path in to the installer. But I am not sure how many of those old Exe's there are still in the DAZ3D Store. I use DIM to install all DAZ3D content. So much easier for me to do so.
gotcha on copy and paste. no i know that the poser goes into run time but some these guys don't put the files in the proper folders.I had poser yrs ago and remember even when you had exe files the items didn't always go into the right folders. u would have clothes or poses in the character folders and visa versa. I know there used to be a link somewhere that showed what file extensions went into what folders. I remember way back when spending a week or more moving files lol wished I still had them folders. I love using Daz for a base for creating basic characters to take into 3d max and ZBrush. seems most of the content you find by users is really hokey so for the most part I like to sculpt my own chars and clothes in ZBrush but some creators do have some really nice content
I found it so Might as well share it here since it is along the same discussion http://poser.smithmicro.com/basics/file_hierarchy.html
I do have a backup of my old DS3 content folders so tomorrow I can take some screenshots of the Runtime and folders within if that would help.
if it is not too much trouble. I would like to get everything organized properly and will make life easier in the future. I don't mind spending several days arranging files so once its done its done lol im 52 yrs old nothing better to do all day
You old fart...I just turned 50 and have loads to do all day every day. :P
Ok sometime tomorrow (being 1 am here) and will get some screens run off and posted and no it is no trouble at all.
hehe only 7pm here
:cheese:
well im at square -1 now. I got everything over to my new library folder and uninstalled daz then reinstalled it and nothing works. I get errors that it cant find files etc and the daz and data folder that installs isnt there and looks like it put them in my library folder. which is probably why nothng works and it cant find files. even when I get genesis to open i get an error and cant modify it and none of my character morphs show up
lol I knew I should have left everything in the program file dir didn't really see why it hurt anything
just need the file structure for daz so I can make sure all the files are in the proper folders too
screenshots coming
first is a screenshot of my library second is screenshot of program file dir
and my program file folder
You where never suppose to put user content in the Program Files folders, starting with Windows Vista and all later versions of Windows MicroSoft added UAC (User Account Control) to prevent unauthorized writing to the Program Files folders. One more thing, clothing, and anything that has rigging, is a figure. While the placement of files make not seem to make much sense there was/is a good reason for it. Studio and Poser versions from 8 on are more tolerant of file placement but you still shouldn't be moving them if you really don't understand the file hierarchy system.
You say you had your files in the Program Files folder and yet in the Content Directory Manager screen shoot you posted you had no link to it. Studio needs to be told where your content is.
You need to do what fixmypcmike suggested in an earlier post, and expand the two formats so that we can see what you have listed as content folders. DS needs these paths to be correct to see any content at all.
ok here is hot of my content thingy. just got up was up all night trying to get this stupid prog to work. abt to throw computer through window rofl
You shouldn't have "Runtime" as part of the path, it should just be "C:\My Library".
It also looks like you pulled some folders out of the Data folder -- 3_0 and 4_0_2 are supposed to be inside the Data folder, and some of the others may be as well.
yea i figured the runtime thing out this is just so frustrating because a lot of my stuff it tells me something is missing when I try to load a file and it was there before
also with all those messy folders is there a way to clean that up and how can I make all that stuff load in my smart content to make it easier to get to
Once you correct the path to exclude the Runtime you can use the options menu on the Content Library pane (rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner) > Content DB Maintenance > Re-Import Metadata to get your Smart Content back. I suspect that some of the folders with vendor names are supposed to be in the Data folder.
ok re imported but I still get errors this is one when I try to load Viki 6 on top of gia
