[SOLVED] Iray Render Viewport Crashing GPU

sylviasobakasylviasobaka Posts: 36

Hello there !

I am a bit desperate right now, I just reinitialized my PC and I also realized Daz Studio got updated (Both public and Regular Version)

It was working fine before but now, when I load in a heavy scene and try to preview it in viewport Iray or start a full render, it will load for a few seconds and then crash my GPU with an error log. (I have uploaded it in the files)

I already tried to reinstall completely my GPU driver, reinstalled Daz Studio (I also have tried with the Public and Normal version)

Here are my specs :

32GB DDR4
i9 10900K @3.70Ghz
RTX 3090
Windows 10 64 Bits Pro

Once again, before I reinitialize my PC it was working flawlessly. Now it can't stop crashing when the scene is a bit heavy.

Please help me ! :(

Edit : I finally found a way to fix that problem. I checked Windows Page Files and it was set by default at 8Go. It was probably much higher in my last windows instalation. To fix the problem, I have set the Windows Page File to 64Go just to be sure, and it now works !

What driver version are you using?

Latest DS requires 451.(something) or higher.

I tried with both Studio Driver 456.71 and GameReady Driver 457.30

I'm using Daz Studio Pro 4.14.0.8 before I was using either 4.12.2.54 or 4.12.2.51 but unfortunately since it's a new Windows Instalation, I can't use those Legacy versions to test anymore :|

So, if you are using a more simple scene, it works fine?

And the scene that are crashing, did that work in the previous DS version?

Yes, a simple scene will works fine.

Also, I could find and use the version where it used to work BEFORE I reinstall windows. And in the worst of the case, even if the scenes where too big, they where switching to the CPU. (Although this never hapenned with 3090). Now it's doing the exact same thing, it crashes. I don't think it's a Daz Version problem apparently. Something is wrong since I have reinstalled windows... But I couldn't tell what :/

    Does your scene have instances?

If so, try to set Optimization to memory.

How can you do that ? I'm still quite new to Daz Studio !

Edit : I tried with my old GTX 1080 and same problem, Iray Viewport doesn't work and Render crashes daz and GPU

In your render settings tab, go to Optimization, and there is a parameter 'Instance optimization'. Default is auto,

I tried that, still the exact same problem I'm afraid :/

Have you tried looking in the log, if there is any clue to why it happens?

I am not an expert in reading the logs, but "2020-11-15 21:06:50.311 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(353): Iray [FATAL] - API:MEMORY :: Memory allocation failed." might look like that you are running out of memory on your GPU.

  • I also think that's the problem but then why was it working before I reinstal windows though ? And the RTX 3090 have 24 Go of Vram, I never had this problem before, even when rendering extremely busy scene @4k.

  • When you reinstalled Win10, did you also re-install afterwards the motherboard updates?  Or even go and DL the latest.

My mobo has all kind of updates that modify chipsets and kernal drivers.  Suspect most mobos would.  Looking at your crash issue in OP it does show a basic Windows kernal driver involved.  May be worth a look.

    @sylviasobaka

Have you reinstalled the Nvidia driver since you reinstalled Windows 10? If not, that is likely your problem.

Oh of course I did ! I tried a lot of different drivers as stated in one of my messages above.

Okay so... I have reinitialised my PC once again, wiped everything out, reinstalled Daz Studio and the assets required for the scene one by one, drivers have been installed on my motherboard, latest Nidia Drivers are up to date and once again, it doesn't work. It crashes.

Why was it working before ? And why is it not switching over to CPU instead of just Crashing ? What the hell am I doing wrong ?

    I really need help :/

  • Just a few rando ideas.

Are you 100% sure you are still on the same version of DazStudio where you were able to work fine before.

Have you tried other applications that are demanding?  Like for example Triple AAA games?  Idea is to make sure your hardware/software system is working properly in harmony.  Or maybe benchmarking software to stress test your system?

Also, why did you reinstall Win10 to begin with?

I was using 4.12 last time but I tried this version and it does the exact same thing now. 4.12 and 4.14 are crashing the same way.

I did, everything is fine with other games / apps. I currently have a RTX 3090 and I tried with a GTX 1080 it's doing the same thing.

I did reinstall Win10 because it has a few problems like updates not installing anymore and other minor things like that. I like to take a fresh start every 6 months or so. But it never bothered me like that before, hell if I knew what was going to happen I wouldn't have reinstalled it... But here we are :/

K, so that is really wierd.  The fact you are crashing now with older & new Dazversions and everything is up-to-date is just wierd.  Both Iray preview and render are demanding for power.  You may want to consider some kind of benchmarking software to stress test your power availablity.  Seems like a long-shot, but something has changed,  and isolating elements one by one is about the only choice I can see.  Or it's what i do, throwing all kinds of tests to see what all triggers the fail and when.

Also, maybe, go into DazStudio, edit>preferences>Interface and change the texture reources to pure performance and see if that helps in any way.  Plus there are other settings you could tweak there to change impact.  It is possible you had  a setting in Daz before that is different now, and with reinstall of Daz (as oppposed to update) that a key seting that worked for you before has changed.

  • I spent the day doing that :/ Everything is fine on my PC, everything is quite new and I never had any problem in any 3D app before, except Daz Studio, it was never really stable even before, but not like this !

I'm pretty sure that's a setting problem yeah, something was maybe ticked / unticked before and has changed since I reinstalled everything. But I need to find out what ! Also, I tried texture to pure performance and it doesn't help either.

I've also tested to run the Iray Preview in a very small window, and it doesn't crasg, but it will load forever and never pre/render anything.

Okay small edit, might be important ! Now that I have setted the Texture to Performance and now it doesn't crash at all. Iray Viewport are just infinitely loading and when I try to render it just stops after a few seconds with a full black render. That's somekind of progress I guess !

  • Wow.  Sounds like you did a ton of trouble-shooting already.  Doubly-wow that you tried with GTX 1080 only and same result.  I'd be :/ too.

The fact Iray preview in small window does nothing makes me now guess some software install is incomplete, missing, superceded, since your hardware is working fine in other 3d apps like games.

Hopefully someone with similar experience can come and comment.  Sorry can't be more help.  :(

  • I tried again a render with the same settings and it crashed. Wtf ? I'm losing hope at this point :/

Thank you for trying anyway ! :) Do you maybe know other optimisation settings by any chances ?

  • So if you add the default G8F to scene does texture shaded and filament work?

So if you add the default G8F to scene does texture shaded and filament work?

On that "heavy" scene, filament works fine, shaded works fine as well but when going to Iray (Render or Viewport it kinda explodes)

And on a regular scene with a G8F loaded, with no background or anything, everything works. Iray, Shaded, Filament, Full Render etc etc...

  • I feel like the problem is not VRAM but DDR4 Ram, my scene is reaching 99% of the avaible 32GB DDR4 of my system... Why it never hapenned before though ? I'm sure it's a setting but which one ?

Oh hey that is actually great news.  I misunderstood that somehow.  Iray does work.  Just not on your heavy scene.

In this case, would suggest rebuilding your heavy scene piece by piece and see when crash finally triggers.  At same time, monitor in TaskManager the amount of RAM usage.  I know, I know... it worked before, but doing it this way may show what item (or amount of items together) is causing this.  Then figure out from there, or post back when it crashes during rebuild of heavy scene.

If you have something like even one dF SBH Hair - well that can be a a killer, stressing not so much the GPU, but your system RAM, all depending on the hair densities.

I tried that, and it's most certainly a RAM problem, Daz is running out of ram and makes the PC kinda crashes. Even chrome said "Out of Memory" when I tried to load the page after crashing. I tried disable half of the scene assets and it still crashes ! While it was working perfectly fine before without eating 100% of my ram !

  • Sorry.  Had started my reply before your post about DDR4 Ram, so never saw it when I wrote what I did.  So scuse the redundancy to what your wrote.
