DIM: Install Error: This package cannot be installed.
Doing a clean install on a new laptop. While I was away from the machine, DIM was downloading and (hopefully) installing the new Studio package along with Genesis 8 and Genesis 3 Starter Essentials. No other products, just the main files to requires Studio to get itself up and running.
I returned to my laptop. Downloads are done. But DIM has this Install Error popup message, repeating 11 times, "This file could not be opened for reading. This package cannot be installed." DIM shows only four packages were downloaded and installed:
dForce Starter Essentials
Postgresql
Default Resorces for DAZ Studio 4.9+
Interactive Lessons for DAZ Studio 4.10+
11 other items were downloaded but not installed due to error, including the latest build of Studio itself.
The good news is I've encountered no other problems my first day back in DAZland. (I'd been staying away from the store and DIM since before the changeover in late October.) My account logs in fine, DAZ recognizes my PC+ status. My downloading and installation of the latest DIM went without a hitch. This has been my first hiccup.
Does my problem sound similar to what others have encountered for the past two weeks? Suggestions as to how I might resolve this situation myself, or do I need to add to the growing list of Customer Service tickets? I'm on a Win 10 Laptop if that means anything at all. Thanks.
Comments
I'm guessing one of two things:
1) either Windows or security software blocked Studio from installing, and that caused any plugins to fail. Not sure why the G8/G3 Starter Essentials would have failed.
2) the downloads failed or were corrupted
What does the helper log say?
EDIT: looking at the error message, I'm guessing the second, Studio itself and the G3/G8 Starter Essentials being several hundred MB each
Well, as to 1) Windows Security popup asked if I wanted files to make changes to my system, and I said yes. My only security software is Defender, and that didn't give any false warnings.
It would seem that 2) would be more likely at this point.
How do I access Help log? Clicking Help on DIM Interface just brings up the DAZ Help web page.
Click the gear icon in the upper right corner > Show Helper Log
Thanks. Here is Helper Log:

Check the owner and permissions on C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library/
It looks like DIM isn't being allowed to write there.
Check how, precisely? Are we talking about a setting under DIM or more globally under Windows 10?
Under Windows, not sure if it's different in Win10, but right-click on the folder > Properties > Security tab
Nope. Don't see that tab in Win10.
You should - right-click on the folder, select Properties from the menu, then there is aSecurity tab in the dialogue that opens.
Can you take a screenshot of what Properties shows?
Oh, you mean under File Explorer (or whatever Win10 calls it now.) Okay, I see it now. Alright, I right-clicked on the C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library/ and brought up the Security tab. Now what should I be looking for, and what do I change?
What groups have write access?
If I'm looking in the right spot, I see Group user names such as SYSTEM, BATCH, ADMINISTRATORS, SERVICE, CREATOR OWNER. Nothing for DAZ... again, if I'm indeed looking at the right tab.
You ant OWNER, which should be you, at least - Daz isn't a user on your machine, what an aplication can do will depend on the account which runs it.
Okay, so what field do I select to edit, and how? I'm lost here. What additional information do you require?
For now we are just asking what it says
Okay, gotcha, sorry about the miscommunication.
Assuming I'm looking in the right place, below are screen captures for the various permissions.
The blacked out area is simply the name of my computer tech guy.
The last permission field not showing in the screen captures is "Special Permissions." The names checked for Special Permissions are CREATOR OWNER, computer tech guy, BATCH, INTERACTIVE, and SERVICE. System and Administrators do not have checks next to their names.
CREATOR OWNER should have Full Control. Click the Edit button and see if you can add permissions.
I clicked Edit and changed permissions for CREATOR OWNER to have Full Control, but whether I hit OK or Apply, when I return to the previous screen CREATOR OWNER still does not have Full Control (see attached).
You may need to close the dialog and reopen it to see the changes.
Nope. I thought of that, tried it several times. Even shut down Explorer and opened it again and checked Properties. CREATOR OWNER is still denied Full Control.
Hmm, I would have expected it to tell you if the operation failed. What about just read and write access?
Read only for main folder.
Okay, will it allow you to uncheck Read Only?
Sounds like you are not logged in as an Administrator
It's asking me if I want to apply the change (uncheck read only) to main directory -- or subdirectories/files as well.
I assume I should choose the second option?
Yes
I applied changes, hit OK. So far, so good. Closed Explorer. Opened it again. Went to DAZ3D directory. Checked properties. Still "read only."
So... none of the changes I've attempted so far seemed to take. What are my options?
I don't know why you aren't being prompted if it wants you to have admin privileges, but I don't use Win 10. If you go back to the Security tab in Properties, click Advanced and go to Ownership and see if it ill allow you to take ownership.
