I had a comment about computers but I forgot what it was. Thanks for the advice Kyoto Kid and Jaderail. I'll need to update my spreadsheet tomorrow. It's bedtime for me.

I can put the old 2 GHz computer in the guest bedroom after I build my new computer. I'll need to buy an extra monitor, keyboard and mouse though.

oh, I remember what I wanted to say: I just realized that I can play some MMORPGs on my computer without memory problems. I guess the 3D models and textures are optimized for 32 bit Windows. Daz Studio and Luxrender on the other hand sometimes uses more than 1.5 GB. There was a thread on this forum where someone said that their scene with multiple figures of Genesis uses 10 GB of memory. Ok, I'll try to buy 16 GB of memory.

y'know, sometimes the direct approach is best. i went in and asked.

Manager here approved the contract renewal. so far so good. not actually submitted yet. don't know how long the approval chain of command is.

and i'm seeing an extra 25 cents in this week's pay stub, i usually have to sign something when they give me the extra 25 cents, don't understand what changed.

anyhoo. back to the pita spreadsheet. it'll be easier to work on knowing it won't be my last :)

Gimp hardly uses the hard drive to store temporary files. Daz studio, on the other hand, generates 300 MB of TDL files the folder C:\documents and settings.

I need to learn how to format a spreadsheet. Autoformat doesn't work for me. Ugg.

I just logged in to answer your question.

For the video card that I want (7850), the resolution is:

    DisplayPort 1.2: 4096x2160 @ 60 Hz per display

    HDMI: 4096x2160 @ 30 Hz

    Dual-link DVI with HDCP: 2560x1600

    VGA: 2048x1536

    But I only have a 15 inch monitor set to 1024 x 768. lol

Ok, I'm going to eat lunch now. Bye

I suppose you could put some version of Linux on it to play with. I understand there's a good Windows emulator for Linux called Wine. It would work until you could afford to upgrade. Or you could keep the notebook offline, and use the desktop for browsing and downloading. A WiFi card would probably be less expensive, then you could go online with the desktop. Of course, the router probably has an Ethernet connection, anyway, maybe even a gigabit port. Your desktop is pretty new, it might even have a gigabit Ethernet connection built in.

    Just some food for thought.

....not that savvy anymore to set up Linux. I'd still have to wipe everything off and start new anyway which is what I'd like to avoid as I don't have an extra HDD to use for backup. I need the notebook for online work so I can view tutorials, search for jobs, and access the forums without interrupting what I am doing on the workstation. Often times when I am on the forums here I am also running a render process on the workstation. If I went on the forums with the workstation while rendering I'd be getting very poor Net response because the rendering puts so much demand on the CPU's resources.

The workstation already has a direct connection for downloading and uploading only. The modem I have is a combo wireless/ethernet (in effect a mini hub) so to get online I primarily use the notebook's built in wireless. The Workstation also do not have a sound card so streaming video tutorials with it is pretty useless. And again I like to have whatever application I'm working in open at the same time so I can actually follow the steps as illustrated in the tutorial at the same time (I'm still much better off with illustrated PDFs as I find it a bother to stop back up and start again to understand what is being done - basically retention from printed matter is much better than video).

I have a pretty tough AV/firewall (third party, not Windows) on both systems as well as anti-malware/adware utilities and wondering if those might be sufficient.

So, you don't have a router? Even when I had only one computer I had a router. They are much safer than using the modem straight. Software firewalls are only so good. The hardware firewalls that are found in routers are much better. I'm not saying they're perfect. In this day, nothing is perfect. But they are much better than a software firewall. It is recommended that you still use the software firewall. As far as viruses and worms, no software protects you from all of them, especially when there's a new one out. But they all catch up pretty fast I think.

Unfortunately, if we are concerned about security, I think we'll have to bite the bullet and get what is needed to move to Windows 7, or stay offline with that computer. The latter is not an option for me.

...that actually is a good decision as the MB most likely can support up to 32GB. The cost for 16GB (2 x 8 GB DDR3 Dual Channel) varies form as low as 114$ to around 200$ This will leave you two slots for future expansion to 32GB

    NewEgg 16MB

Since you are building a new system you might want to consider an OEM version of WIn7 Pro for (139$ at Newegg) which has an XP Mode meaning it will run older software compiled for XP. WIn7's UI is also much closer to the original Windows concept and it has an auto backup and restore feature which 8 doesn't. Very handy if you need to restore your system back to an earlier date for whatever reason.

An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) OS is primarily for system builders and has some restrictions compared to a Non-OEM version.

-- Once installed on one computer it can never be installed on another machine, nor are you permitted to replace the motherboard (basically what this means is if you ever do replace the MB you need a new copy of the OS).
-- You receive no technical support from Microsoft. (other than using their normal online help & FAQs)
-- You can only perform a clean installation of the OS, not an upgrade (again, since you would be setting this system up from scratch, this doesn't apply).

...just a few ideas to save a bit.

...no router, again being unemployed made it difficult at the time to afford extra hardware. Also, I wasn't aware they had their own "built in" firewalls so that was one of the reasons I never got one. The other reason was that the modem I have through my ISP included both hard wired and wireless connectivity (the latter requiring a WEP key).

I just looked at the MS page on upgrading and it looks like an absolute pain in the bum for even if you backup you entire system, you still have to reinstall all your programmes manually. For me that is really bad, as my Office2k install disc was corrupted and I really can't afford, or want, 2010 because they screwed up the workflow with that stupid ribbon concept as well as messed with the standard hotkeys.

Hopefully the video card will fit inside the mid-size ATX case.

    The approximate dimensions are:
    centimeters : 24.1 x 11.12 x 3.81
    inches : 9.5 x 4.4 x 1.5

Edit: it weighs: 1.25 kilograms / 2.75 pounds. How big is the heatsink?? lol

Yeah, but at only 30 Hz refresh rate, video will be choppy. Even old standard television video was 60 Hz.

Keep in mind that the dimensions alone won't tell you if it's deep enough. The motherboard doesn't mount right against one side, there's always some kind of space, sometimes more than you'd think.
