Mandelbulb3D :
You can make some interesting backdrops.
Once you start messing with this program which generates 3D fractals, hours disappear.

Affable, The Ballroom and Luxus.
Lots of faffing about and 14 hrs cooking time.
Wish the walls in the sample scene didn't have gaps showings, had to rotate and scale some doors and wall sections to close the gaps.
Dawn, Luxus and trying to create some water.
Tried creating some water texture using free software - Gimp. Got mixed results, but was interesting just to mess around.
Dawn. If you want to give me something free, then I don't mind. One more for the collection, and peeps are producing free stuff to go with the figure.
Used free longer legs morph, shorter neck morph, navel smother morph, from sharecg.
I can get some larger waves using displacement, but on a choppy sea you would hold that pose ;)
Displacement.
Used 0.2 percent and faded to black to taper off waves and avoid a bumpy horizon.
Thanks HeraldOfFire, for the IBL Environment/Lighting.
Gimp plugin used : Water Reflection Map which produces a 3d texture. Just Undo a few times to get to the 2d texture.
Greyscale / Blur to antialias and gradient fill overlay black for horizon.
Still messing.
Wings3D, Luxus with IBL.
After seeing David Brinnen's post.

Thought I'd give Wings3D a try. Needs more cooking time, but after an hour I noticed picture artifacts and decided that it was time to try something else.
Same but different. Left this one rendering overnight - 2.75 KS/p.
I like this second one. Nice colour scheme.
@ Raindrop Drinkwater:
Thanks. I prefer the second as well. There's something about copper wire. Erm.
Wings3D and Luxus.
Followed David Brinnen's video tutorial on making a 36 link bracelet.
I had four Luxrender windows on the go, which in combination of the light emitting material really choked down my system, so the following renders are all only about 200 S/p.
Tried to get some environmental reflection in the copper but ended up turning it down as it saturated the image. I wanted the diffuse lighting effect anyway.
Main pic called:
Right, hope that bald wizard was on the level about this levitation bracelet. Or did he say levity?
or
Right, which pose shall I use? Ah!, this Zero one looks good.
What Bald Wizard? Where?
Nice effect there By the way.
@jaderail
Ha ha. I'm sure it was one of the other bald wizards.:)
Thanks, it just takes a lot of tweak, tweak, tweaking.. Probably because I'm the last person who'd read the manual on anything I buy!
Still messing with Wings3D and Topmod. Two more from the D. Brinnen Stable. Rendered to 1.4KS/p.
Same but different II.
After posting the one above, which rendered overnight. I left Luxrender running.
This one cooked to 2.8KS/p. Not a great deal of difference, slightly smoother internal red shading but hardly worth the extra time.
Another Dave Brinnen Wings3D model.
Topmod Interlocked Stars. Took a while to track down the tutorial to produce that shape. Tried watching the Japanese one on Youtube but I could not see the settings. (Luxball temporarily replaced).
Glass and Light.
Very pretty. I like these Wings3D "noodles".
Thanks. What can I say, I'm addicted to noodles. :)
Strange sometimes, renders take on a life of their own and you can end up with something you didn't first envisage.
With Luxrender never give up on your first render, as you can tweak the GUI settings to adjust to your preference. It's great to get a good lighting balance, adjust colours, etc.
In the past I've binned a lot of renders that I now realize could have been salvaged.
Just messing with lights in Luxus/Luxrender. What with 14 light cubes, 1 spotlight and 3 plane lights, this one crawled along.
Disconsolation, M4 and Genesis (not that you can recognize them).
The lighting needed to be ramped up to show heavier lightrays, which made the lamps look bright white and the scene then looked overexposed. No doubt I could add some lens effects in Gimp but left it as is. Guess I'll need to fiddle more with the IES files.
Sill messing with Wings3D. Two more D.Brinnen cubes. Thought I'd give blue velvet a try.
Oooh... that velvety effect is nice. Glad to see my tutorials are being put to good use! Neat. I've made a couple more over the weekend on the topic of using UVmapper. Might find them useful for further noodling.
(In case you happen to paruse back here): Thanks Dave, just had a goosey at your latest videos. I've seen UVmapper Classic before, but not used it. I'll dust it off though, If I see you using it in your videos.
Bryce is another matter again. I've got it as one of my downloads but not used it as I prefer the more traditional render layout that's in DS. I just didn't take to it's many button pushing gui screens. However, lately I've been thinking of re-installing it and having a look at creating background skies and landscapes or even HDRI's if I can figure out how to use them in DS and Lux.
In the meantime I've been using Wings3D to create Posts, Bollards and litter bins.
Just messing with ..
IES lighting in Luxus
Tried various primative shapes and attached the light and IES to the wall primatives L-R Plane/Cube/Sphere/Cone/Cylinder. just to see what happens. The Light shadowing on the walls looks great but getting lightrays around the light source is another matter.
If your interested in trying IES. Here's some sites to start :

Wings3D. More D.Brinnen noodles. 1.65Kp/s.
Came across this and picked up a couple of tidbits.

Still messing with Luxus and God rays.
Took a while to get the colour projecting onto the floor.
Thought I'd post some of my other pics here.
Something wicked this way comes.

Tinned goods.
Godin's Carina. I'll have to start collecting more Godin characters.
I've got your back.

G2F at the beach.
Anabelle with Garibaldi hair.
Back to Mandelbulb3D.
A girl with a gun :-)
Nice renders throughout.
I fired up Lux again earlier today myself. Had a couple of runs at it, got fed up and went back to Omni lights.
My main issue with Lux is, if something isn't right it can take some time before you notice it. I've sent images off to render over night on several occasions only to throw them away in the morning because something wasn't right.
I am going to look into the network proxy rendering though as that might be well worth while.
Thanks John.
I know what you mean about Luxrender, To be honest there's not a lot of difference now with the new shaders, and setting up effects like fog can be a pain in Luxrender. It's still usable though and great at indoor scenes like kitchens etc.
I find it's a good idea to fiddle with the settings after putting the gui into linear. I've salvaged quite a few that way.
