Ok, It's ME.NO DIM files work-Not Using Installer. EDIT: Also: Doing Custom Setup

Well, there's nothing worse than doing a training video and not having what you're doing work (LOL) How hard can this be?

1. I am not using the DIM installer. I was told repeatedly oh, simple, unzip and do just like other zip files. Well, I'm doing something wrong. Let me go step by step (ironic, the name of my series) and tell me where I'm goofing.

1. downloaded file.
2. Extracted. (Doing 3d Universe's Toon Giraffe, if you want to follow along)
3. have these files waiting on me to do the right thing: (apologies in advance to these files)
Content
Manifest
4. Chose User/Cathie/MyDocuments/Daz3d/Studio/MyLibrary and dragged the files over.

I did a search of that directory/folder (MyLibrary) and it shows files there. Is not in Smart Content or Content Library. I've tried this last week with DIM files and none have ever worked. SO ITS ME. What am I missing? Where are they?

They are not where they are supposed to be based on the Readme. So don't tell me to check that please! I also checked under "3" for Product search, all other 3D Universe stuff is there. Also not coming up for searches for giraffes.

Mine is on safari. Laughing at my stupidity.

And no, the studio was not open when I did the files. Here shows where it should be in Poser Library. Will re-importing the meta data do it? How do you know with a DIM file whether or not it has metadata? Once it becomes all DIM files, it won't have metadata listed in the Product Library.

Checked in the Content Database Management Service (hope I got that right, you know where I mean) and did the re-import metadata to look at the list, it's not on there. (canceled it)

Open the CONTENT folder Select all and Then Copy and Merge to My Library. You put a CONTENT (DS3) folder inside a content folder (My Library DS4).

Ok, when I double clicked on the Content folder, it only has the Runtime. Humor me here-
When you say Copy then merge- if I click copy and copy it, is the next step to PASTE it into My Library folder?
If I do that, here's what comes up- folder already has a folder named runtime, do you want to merge (assume that would be yes, just like the other zips) And I assume the copy would be do not copy? (like other zips)

Well, I did it- and it still didn't show up. Shut off the studio twice. It would briefly blink the "read assets" but zipped off really quick. Went into the content management and did find the giraffe when I selected re-import meta data, and after that, it showed up. But I can't do this every time I use those DIM files.

Yes... copy (or cut) everything out of "Content" and into "My Library"
Right now you have My Library\Content\Runtime.... etc
It needs to be My Library\Runtime... etc

When you extract a DIM file you get a content folder with folders in it. All the folders go into "My Library" and then just delete the empty "Content" folder.

    Hope that helps :)

And what the heck is that red thing for the eyes? It doesn't do anything, can't click it. Not like the Universal Tool.

Thanks SassyWench :) Yes, it does.
Now about those red binoculars my giraffe has...any answers on that?

Sorry.. I don't have have the giraffe. But if you put your cursor on the R or L does it move the eyes? Like pose controls?

As for the re-import meta data problem, just try right clicking on whatever folder you just installed and hitting Refresh from the pop-up. Like if you installed poses, right click and refresh. Or the runtime folder, right click and refresh. That works for me when I have DS open while installing files.

I'm serious, of all times for a product to act up, the one I choose for a video. (Grins. It figures!) Ive never had this thing-a-ma-jiggy pop up before- no, it does NOTHING. Universal tool wont budge it. But when I move the morphs, it does.
    See image.

Ok.. that's just bizarre LOL Sorry I can't help with it! Is there something in the read me about it?

If all else fails, can you make it invisible in the surface tab or something?

Ok.. I just googled the giraffe and there should be show/hide poses.

I still don't know how to use it but you can get rid of it LOL

    Weird, isn't it?
I love your motto. Made something for you- appreciate your help (and for trying anyway!) And you too Jaderail!
These are two of the four baby deer that I have (wild) at the ranch. They love your motto too. :) They like the horses and graze with them each evening- yes, every evening I get to go out to this. (Which is why I never get around to rendering, that's my excuse.)

There is nothing to select to make that thingie go away. Ugh.
I'll try the refresh thing, thanks for the tip! Will put this thread in my Art Studio.

Awww Novica, I'm honoured :) Thanks much! :) The deer are beautiful! (I'd buy the no-rendering excuse too! LOL)

Look in the pose folder. There should be something there to hide it.

    Fingers crossed! :)

I've got (Parameters) General, Display, Morphs, DForms.
Under Poses in My Library, no giraffe stuff there.

Okay, let me try to uninstall this thing and reinstall. Exactly how do I find ALL the giraffe files in My Library? I assume they are scattered around?

    Hi...

Here's the link to the file list if that helps...

    http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/5781/file_list

The binocular looking thing is the "Eye Target Tool" for posing the eyes

    Hope this helps... :)

That eye target thing is apparently what I'm moving the sliders on (Param/Morphs)
When I move the slider, the binoculars do move (as per the other photo) but the binoculars are not clickable out in the viewport.
I've been experimenting, found it in the SCENE tab to turn it off.
Oh GEEZ, you have to SEE this to appreciate how many bones I went through to get to the eyes!

Thanks folks, hopefully this will help someone else if they get the binoculars / eye targets. Strange, I've never had this show on any other 3d toon critters.

Could that be because no others have it? Was a helper added by the PA. Sorry I'm late to the party I was off-line. Glad you got your content working.

Well I would HOPE you'd be offline- it's 1:45am! :) (You're in the South like me, right?)
I bought this Dec 22nd, so been awhile. I would think other people would have this- they are just smarter than I am. They would have gone into the Scene sooner.

What I find hilarious is that I was videotaping the process for the My Account training video I'm doing, and how to download and install, and then I am the one who needs the training. Gotta love it. THEN of all products, I get one with red binoculars. Glad I have a sense of humor.

    Appreciate everyone! :)

BTW Jaderail, the DIM files training video is up, and I credited you (end of video) and a bunch of other folks for their assistance. I really couldn't help others without all the help given me while doing it. I just hope I don't hit these weird snags very often!

EDIT: Szark and Scott-L are baby-sitting me. I'm in good hands, should call them Allstate. (Folks overseas might not get that- it's a commercial.)

One other quick question- this one was easy, only had Runtime. What about those that have other things? The Manifest as I recall isn't necessary to drag over?

I don't have the Giraffe, but on Sadie (Original version) I have a parameters tab for the binocular thing, this one alters both eyes, can also alter eyes separately

    THis is in Poser

Chohole- is there any reason WHY an eye target is needed? I mean, in DS, I just move the slider the same as always, and when the slider moves the eyes move. What on earth is the advantage of having binoculars (my term) move at the same time? We can just watch the eyes!
    (Thanks for sharing btw)

I don't know why 3DU does it this way, personally I just turn them off in Poser.

    First... good morning! :)

OK... you're right... Manifest isn't needed for My Library but for everything else just move everything that extracted into Content folder into My Library folder.

If you open up the My Library folder (from Windows, not through DS) you'll see folders like Camera, data, People, lights, etc. In the newly extracted Content folder you'll see some or all the same folders. Just paste them into My Library and you're good to go! :)

What I do is extract all my new stuff to my desktop, open up My Library and the newly extracted Content folder, put the windows side by side on my desktop and just drag the new stuff into the My Library folder. (Well before that I go through all the new folders and rename and reorganize but that's just me LOL) Once you get the hang of it, its really easy! :)

For the giraffe poses, they may be in a 3D Universe folder.. not directly in Poses.

You'll get it sorted. It only hurts for a little while. LOL

Time for work for me.. my own world of hurt! HA

I don't own the Toon Giraffe, or anything else that comes with an eye target as far as I know. But I have a guess as to what it is for. Select the eye, go to Parameters>Misc, go to Point At and choose the target (presumably the left eye would be pointed at the LeftEyeTarget and the right eye would be pointed at the RightEyeTarget. Then move the target wherever you want it to go (wherever you want your giraffe to be looking) and the eyes will follow it. I've heard of people using nulls in this way, although that's not my usual method.

Edited to add: actually maybe it's the reverse...move the eye sliders, and the target will show you where the eyes are looking...

Impressive list of neck bones, given that actual giraffes only have seven! I guess it makes sense that toons would need some extra flexibility.

Yeah. that list was like the Energizer Bunny. It just kept going and going....should be fun! I plan on doing what I always do first- grab the head, move it and see what happens, lol.

And good afternoon Sassy Wench! When I head out to the barn in an hour, I'll tell my deer the corn is from you today :)
I'd love to reorganize my files- is it as simple as making a folder (all within My Library) with subfolders (product names) and dragging over to it?) That way everything for an item would be together. Or (sigh) is it more complicated than that?

The other question I had- does having a lot of files installed slow down the studio start up time? Do most people use the products then remove from the studio? I have all my files on an external hard drive so I've always got them, and quite a few on my pc.

Yeah Scott-L.. I've read about nulls and using them to target things, haven't done any yet. I had already deleted the giraffe (closed without saving as it was only for a training video) but I'll let ya know if I reopen him this weekend. (man, I sound like a veterinarian.)

I do believe Scot is correct. That is a Cool Idea, I might build one for Human figures and give it a run around the block.
