  • The future of Daz Studio on the Mac OS platform...

As a dedicated Mac user as well as a dedicated Studio user, I’m concerned that Apple’s decision to deprecate OpenGL on all Mac OS platforms going forward and replacing 3D processing with Metal, Studio, which is already kinda clunky, laggy and slow on my iMac, may at some point no longer be compatible with the Mac OS. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a concern but after having invested so much time and hundreds of dollars on Daz 3D content, it all may no longer be usable on my Mac computers.

Is this a possibility? Will Studio continue solely as an OpenGL platform or is Metal support being planned?

About the only thing I can recommend is to ensure you have a backup plan.  Over the years, I've been burned by various 3D software companies (full details below).  I write software for a living and incorporate some 3D assets (for UI, game pieces, etc.).  I've recently picked up Cinema 4D Broadcast.  Expensive, but they have been, and still are, fully committed to the Macintosh platform.  One of the very first to fully embrace 64-bit as well many years ago.  C4D gives me both a CPU-based and GPU-based rendering solution out-of-the box (iMac Pro can take advantage of AMD's ProRender).   Once I have re-created all my 3D assets in C4D, I plan to officially retire all other packages (currently just Poser and Daz).

The list of 3D software I have used over the years on the Mac:

    • Alias Sketch; was fun back in the day, but got bought out I believe and then scrapped.
    • Bryce: no longer worked beyond Mac OS X 10.6.  No commitment at all to modernize it to this day.
    • Poser since v1.0: Fun at first, but recent releases made a mess of things and releases have slown to a crawl.
    • Daz Studio.  Numerous issues as outlined in this thread.  Took them forever to move to true 64-bit (including DIM).  So between this and Bryce, really lost my faith in the company.
    • Strata Design.  Ancient UI; zero committment to move to 64-bit.

Having said all that, will Daz embrace platform-specific solutions?  Probably only if the framework it's built on (QT, I think), does the heavy lifting.  It's a philosophical choice.  On one hand (what I do), is fully embrace a particular platform for what it offers.  Common business-logic can then be shared.   On the other hand, many software shops go for the "least common denominator" approach.  I'm pretty sure Daz falls into the latter.

Plan to use OS Sierra 10.12 on a Mac Pro.

Should I install cuda 8 driver, or get the latest driver: cuda 9.2? Nvidia page for cuda 9.2 driver aka 410.130 has a supported OS section that only mentions OS 10.13.

I’m not sure that Cinema 4D or anything else that sophisticated and powerful is in my future. Wouldn’t make much sense for me to spend that kind of money for software that powerful for what I do. I’ve left Poser behind because it’s no longer compatible with Daz’s newer figures although I did like Poser’s Ui better. Maneuvering figures and props as well as keyboard shortcuts were far better in Poser than they are in Studio and what I’ve noticed as time has gone on is the increased clunky, lagginess of Studio as the level of complexity of the models grows. Having noticed that, I /can understand why Apple would want to move away from Open GL as it now seems apparent that’s the reason why Studio is so slow and clunky. I guess I don’t have much faith in Daz making Studio metal compatible. Seems most of those who use it are on Windows. Studio is free so why would they bother? That would really be a problem for me. I simply can’t stand the Windows operating system.

  • I've got the same problem and don't feel confident giving DAZ access to scripting abilities that could be malware.

  • I have run simulation after simulation on Daz3D 4.10 and have come to the conclusion that the software is completely unstable with MacOS 10.13.6 and must be rewritten to accomodate the MacOS platform. Until these issues are solved I strongly encourage everyone to play carefully with the software, save often and be extremely careful around IRAY.

  • Hi,

I am having an issue with the Mac File Requestor: When I start Daz 3D (64 bit, latest release), it opens fine, and I create new content, and can use "Open Recent" to load an old saved scene. However, if I choose "Open...", it appears that nothing happens. If I move the main Daz 3D window down, I can see the file requestor behind the main window. However, selecting a saved scene and clicking OK does not do anything (except give me back control of the main Window).

    1) The fact I have a couple old saved scenes that do load with Open Recent tells me that I did actually may have gotten this to work at some point, possibly before Mojave (I mostly use Windows for Daz 3D now, but wanted to test some stuff out on my Mac.)

    2) I thought maybe having multiple Spaces open was confusing it, but I went down to 1 Space, and still doesn't work.

    3) I have deleted and re-installed Daz 3D (latest version on the downloads page), and have the same issue (File Requestors pop under the main screen, and don't actually work)

System: MacOS Mojave 10.14.2, iMac Retina 2017 Radeon 570 4GB I know iRay doesn't work with this computer/video card.) 16GB RAM.

Are you running on an Apple Built machine or on a "hackintosh" (looked at your system specs in the tagline). if you run OS X on that, anything involving GOU drivers will most probably cause you headaches.

I'm not running Mojave on any of my systems, but I'm pretty sure the problems are with that. If the openPanels are behind the application window in all Mojave installs, sounds like a strange problem, but should have been noticed by at least someone else.

Do you have any "enhancer hacks" installed, like WindowShadeX or something like that. I know from experience as a developer that those are usually crapping things up.

Hi Tott, Thanks for your reply. I installed the latest Mac Beta 4.11.0.236, and my requestors are back working! Still assuming it is just something on my computer, as I'm sure other Mac users have run Mojave and the official build with no problems.

Still on Sierra, I'm using version 8.0.83. Making the update installer start seemed to crash my Mac Pro twice, I'm not going to try it again.

  • Does anybody have or know of a MAC 2019 install video?

I've looked everywhere. I need to install stuff!

    Thanks

What kind of machine? iMac? MacMini? MacBook?

  • MiloMilo Posts: 511

Since most of the new macs are all AMD/ATI Radeons, is anyone have a workflow from setting up in DazStudio and then sending to Blender (Cycles or the 2,8 Eevee) to render or are people using Reality, 3dlight, cpu Iray?

Mac Mini. Running Mac OS Mojave. 2018 model.

And what hardware do you want to install in a min?
All I can think of is that you want to connect a PCI bus external box to run nVidia cards in.

I don't want to install software. I want to do a manual install of 3rd party objects such and hair, wardrobe, genitals, and poses.

I'm looking for videos and they are all for Windows. Nothing for Mac. An updated Mac 2018/2019 video (doesn't have to be long) to show the process. I've seen the "screen grab" tutorals and they haven't really helped as I cannot locate these items when I reopen DAZ.

    Then use my RendoInstall ;)

What Totte made simplifies this greatly (much kudos for writing it), since we cant link to other sites do a google search for RendoInstall and go to the result that takes you to the site with the namesake of the softare in it, not the other ones. and you can see a screenshot.

I will see what I can find a video or can do some images, but it works basicly like windows.  You have the same directory structures as windows.

I have a folder I made for the alt download items and then added it to the libraries in dazstudio.

Image 01 This is my folder for NON-dim content.  I have a folder called "Other Runtimes" and I also show you my DIM folder structure in the same imaqe, I like to sperate my content to find it easier.

Image 02 This is inside DazStudio showing my content Library and it corrisponds to those two areas.

Image 03 this shows you how I have the content manager setup inside dazstudio.  I point the daz format conent and the poser format conent to the same directory in all my cases.  Poser and Previous daz content where under Runtime, DazStudio direct content is typically outside of the runtime folder itself.

Image 04 - shows the drop down menu in dazstudio where to find the content directory manager is, Its about 1/3 the way down

Image 05 - Shows what the structure looks like. on disk,  This is my DIM installed content but its the same structure for do it yourself.  This is my Building runtimes, You see a Runtime directory and other folders outside, the Runtime would be poser based content, and the ones outside are the dazstudio based content.  You see Props, data and others.  These folders Runtime and the rest will be in the zip file you download from various sites.

I put my zip file in a folder, then double click and it should hopefully be zipped to be in the folder structure you need, when you double click on your zip file it will extract and give you something like in Image 06, this was a stone mason freebie.  When I double clicked on the zip file it extracted the contents, which happen to be in a folder called Content.  which in this case had a folder called props and one called runtime.  I then dragged with option key held down and copied it my other runtime, temp-load, buildings folder. Image 07.  Because this already has a prop and runtime I get a message saying there are duplicate names and what do I want to do , overwrite or merge them.  I merged them.  Image 08 I am not sure if you dont do the copy but move if it will merge or not.

I hope this helps and if I can find a video I wil link

Mods if this is too much just del this post or the images

I am on an Imac and it has an Radeon Pro 580 with 8 Gigs of Ram.  Since most of the new macs are all AMD/ATI Radeons, are you rendering in CPU Iray or doing something else.  If you are using something else for your DazContent what is your workflow from setting up in DazStudio and then sending to Blender (Cycles or the 2,8 Eevee) to render or  are. you using  Reality, 3dlight, or sticking with cpu Iray something else?

    Input is appreciated.

I know this was brought up awhile ago, but does anyone know if DAZ plans on taking advantage of Metal on MacOS moving forward?

I use Iray CPU on the machine without nVidia cards (MacPro 2014) and Iray GPU or CPU on my MacPro 2012, depening on scene size (my 780 6GB card decided to burn a while a go so I only have a 2GB 750ti in it now.

  • Hey,

I don't know if anyone can help. Have not had much experience with Daz, other than content I have used in Poser, so I tried it,  was able to do some renders, got cocky and bought some stuff from Renderosity, could not get anything to work, got pissed off, uninstalled everything I could, deleted the rest. redownload Daz Studio, now I can't even get my passwot to connect to DAZ from within the program. I was wondering if there is a way to start fresh ? have attached a couple of screenshots of my setup, any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I buy most of my content from Rendo these days. I manually install it using ditto GUI and it works great. No issues.

  • thanks Brian, don't know what ditto is, looked it up, says it's a program for windows clipboard, I'm a mac user

That is your Application Folder, in DAZ Studio, go to Preferences and Content Directory

These are your content directory or directories
