DIM (install manager) is 32 bit. It's DAZ Studio you need to run as 64 bit

That's the matter: on next Mac OS release DIM won't work

When next OS X arrives, I'm sure DAZ will have updated DIM.

Hopefully you’re right; there’s always a chance that they can abandon it and go with their other two options, manually-installed zips and Connect.

I worry more about the loss of lip synching; it already sucks that I need to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of DAZ Studio to do lip syncing, but a 64-bit system would kill it completely and to the best of my knowledge they’re not able to update the function to 64-bit.

  • I've only spent a minimum amount so far in the store.  But am going to hold off on all future purchases until I can be sure my investment will be protected.

Also disappointed that GPU acceleration is only for Nvidia cards.  I may just have to save up money and pursue a more pro-level 3D package that offers GPU accelleration for all platforms as well as being already completely on 64-bit.

GPU only for nVidia is because Iray is an nVidia product. And DAZ Studio is fully 64-bit. What's not 64 bit yet is the installer tool, which really don't have to be 64 bit as the only reason for 64 bit (trust me on this one, I've been a software developer for over 3 decades), is to access > 2GB RAM and do it with fast access (without tricks like bank swapping), and for some things have faster arethmetics (but that's really not the main issue).

Bascially, making DIM 64-bit unless the OS demands it,would be like using a 60 ton truck to haul a can of soda.

  • Software developer here as well for over 30 years.  But that makes no difference for this discussion.  The next major macOS release _will not_ run 32-bit software period.  This is just like what happened with iOS 11; that OS _will not_ run any 32-bit apps.  As such, developers needed to ensure their apps had a 64-bit flavor in order to run on user's devices.

Thus it doesn't matter that the installer app won't need to access 64-bit address space, etc.  But it needs to be 64-bit to simply be able to run on the next OS.

As I said - I'm most confident this wont be an issue. I know this has been brought to the attention of the DAZ developers already and there will be a DIM for 64 bit when it's needed.

  • I have two video cards on my machine. A GeForce GT 740 that I use to drive my monitors and a GeForce GTX 980 that I use for rendering only. DS 4.9 recognizes both cards just fine. However, DS 4.10 sees neither. They do show up in the Dforce sim panel, but not in the iray advanced options. I'm running OS 10.10.5 and I'd rather not go to a newer operating system unless I absolutely have to because every time I do that, something gets broken.

Any ideas how to fix this?

dForce needs OpenCL devices, Iray needs CUDA - they are separate things so it is possible that the cards would show up in one place but not the other. Both cards are certainly supported for iray in principle, but they also require relatively recent drivers so you are as up-to-date as your version of MacOS goes you may have to make a decision.

For 4.10 you need the latest WebDriver from nVidia from the cards as Iray in 4.10 require Cuda at least 8 and Cuda 8 require the lastest video drivers.

  • Grrrrr. OK. Last time I updated my OS with my nvidia card installed, it wouldn't boot. I had to put in my old non-nvidia card to boot and set the nvidia manager to use the web driver, reinstall the nvidia cards and reboot. At least that's how I think I did it, it's been a while. I don't want to go through that again. If I have use web driver checked when I update the system, will I have that problem again? Or is there some other workaround? Hate to sound like an idiot, but I really don't remember.

That's the reason I found an old GT-120 card (with Apple EFI Boot) to have the screen on, just so I can boot on a system update if the WebDriver fails.

LOL. Seems the 64-bit applications with 32-bit installers is not unique to Daz3D.  Lightwave3D and ZBrush still have 32-bit-only macOS installers.  Cinema4D's installer itself is 64-bit, but the application they use to launch that installer is 32-bit.

Is anyone here running Daz with a Mac Pro 5,1 using either a NVIDIA GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti (or even a Titan X, though that may be too rich for my blood)? My 980 Ti gave up the ghost today and I'm trying to decide whether to replace it with another of its kind or if it would be worth it to spend a bit more and upgrade. I have a Mac Pro (Mid 2010); Processor: 2 x 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon; Memory: 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Hmm, I dont think Shift is a legal Option key in its own on OS X, needs Ctrl or Option or Command with it

    I agree..but that's what the menu says "Shift Y"

I know Shift-K works ( toggle keyboard navigation on/off). I hate it as I typesearch content library and as keyboard navigation took the keys first, instead of finding what I was looking for, I moved the camera somehwere inpossible.. lol

But that is probably not a Hot Key as I think it's while you are in the main Window (so the menu key combo guide is somewhat wrong on OS X, but as this is a Qt based software it's not easy to make it 100% GUI compliant with both Windows and OS X, same with other cross plattform programs as well, including well known Photoshop.

But I think (or I know as you can type Shift-K in the Script Pane), that those keys are only valid as long as the keyboard focus is in the main window and no subframe takes control.
One thing that speak for this as well is that if you have  an object in a scene selected, goes to Content Search, type something, but hit backspace as you mistyped, the selected item is deleted (keyboard focus issue that is extremely hard to solve)

My understanding is that in order to run DS 4.9.3 on a MAC, I need to run (1) at least MAC OS 10.7, (2) Cuda 8 and (I think I read) at least Cuda driver 367.XXX.

    My questions are as follows;

I read that the Cuda 367.XXX web driver minimum is actually only necessary for those who want to run a PASCAL Nvidia GPU (like 1060/70/80) on mac 10.12, but NOT ncessary for those already running a (as I am) a kepler GTX 680 using the drivers i am now using for 10.8.3.

    1. is this true --that the 10.8.3 specific nvidia drivers will work with cuda 8 -- and/or

    2. will the most recent driver--in a backward compatible manner--also run on my mac os 10.8.3?

    3. aside from that ...I am wondering if, NEVERTHELESS, the 367.xxx web driver is mandatory just because DS 4.9.3 requires it to play nice with the newest Nvidia technology?

If not, then presumably having MAC OS 10.7 (or higher) and CUDA 8 would be sufficient for DS 4.9.3 to run, right?

It's not DS, but the Iray version in DS that has the driver requirements. New Iray will reqiure new Cuda as it will use new and updated functionality in that Cuda.

then if i've understood correctly, you can't run cuda 8 on 10.8.3 because the 367.xxx driver necessary for it to run requires a mac os 10.12 minimum, which means daz's requirements listing of 10.7 minimum are false ...

    does that all sound right?

and your earlier advice to me pge 26 -- of not running 4.10 on anything lower than 10.9 -- would also be false for the same reason, right? you need at least 10.12 to run cuda 8, right?

The reason is that nVidia is constantly updating it's Videodrivers and Cuda and nVidia only would know from one week to another which version the next one would require of each other. At the same time Iray is upgraded to take advantage of new features in Cuda.
And as only the expensive Pro GPU cards and those systems with built in GPU as ""supported" on OS X by nViida and anything else is not officially supported, I think there is not much you can say.

This may be useful too, but I'm not sure I understood well; could you please specify where to look to chek the host files? Thank you so much to you too!

This goofy forum is blocking me from putting the Terminal command to edit hosts? it's in /private/etc/ on the Mac.

    From Terminal:

    s u d o   n a n o   / e t c / h o s t s

remove all the extra spaces on the above line.

If the file is empty, that's most likely the issue.  Here is the contents of my hosts:

    ##
    # Host Database
    #
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    ##
    127.0.0.1       localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost

Once done editing, use Control-O to write out the file.  Then Control-X to exit.

Hi all. I was having the same issues with CMS and Postgre on a 2017 Macbook Pro running High Sierra. The steps above solved the issue. Thank you very much for posting this solution!

My Mac with High Sierra Intel 4.000, i7, 64bits, 16RAM didn't run DAZ3DIM_1.1.0.72_Mac32.app. It opens and close with a error. Despite of I have choosed open non-store app.

Solution: I selected the appDAZ3DIM_1.1.0.72_Mac32.app, right click in it "Show Package content" (the app package folder) and I opened directly the black icon "osx-intel" file there. It opened the Terminal and the app.

The installer works, but you should select the right file there.

  • I found the My Library folder in My Documents and copied 3rd Party content there, but received error messages. I also found the My Daz 3D Library on the hard drive, but I'm not sure how to load content into it. I'd rather get the content working in the My Library folder so it's seperate from Install Manager content. If anyone has some tips on this please let me know.

    Hi,

I would recommend doing the following things, I don't know how messed up your content folders are or how much content you have, but this is I have had it for the past 6 or so years on m,y macs.

    (1) Have one content directory where you only install stuff from DAZ installed with DIM
    (2) Have another content directory where you install non-daz content (I recommend installing with my RendoInstall Mac OS X Application (you can find it here: http://4eyes.code66.se/?page_id=7463 )
    (3) have a third library for freebees

This way you can disable one or two of something is functioning bad to islolate from where the problem comes.

So, if you only have a few items (less than a few hundred) I would recommened a reinstall of the content.

If you have questions, just yell!

  • I got a new Mac after my previous one began to have hard drive issues. Because of those problems with the old one, my Timemahine is messed up and I've had to manually bring over files. I cloned every Daz-related folder/file I could find with CarbonCloner to transfer it over to my new Mac. Everything is good except Daz can't find the DB and my content. How can I fix this? I'd prefer not to have to lose all my SmartContent data if possible, but I'd also like to get rendering!

Smart content is a bit of a tricky thing, specially if you have loads of personal settings.
First - is the path the same (DAZ uses full paths internally), so is the new content location at the same location as the old one?
Second - Is the problem that Studio cannot start / find the database or is the problem that the links in the database points wrong?
Third. - Did you bring over the DS related stuff in ~/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/ ? All settings and lots of other stuff is installed there.

  • I copied everything over from the ~/Library files I could find, but I changed the name of my main HD on my old machine. I'm gong to see if chaning the new one to that name solves the problem.

  • Unfortunately, at some point today when trying to get files over to the new computer, the old computer's HD defaulted back to "Macintosh HD," which means DS can no longer find the postgreSQL there, either. I don't remember exactly what the HD was named. Is there any way to open a file in something like TextEditor or TextWrangler to find out what the HD was called or what the PostgreSQL is looking for so I can repair it there? If not, how do I fix this (and lose my Smart Content data)?

    Thanks

In ~/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/cms  you have the cms settings (cmscfg.json), it tells Studio where the CMS is locatad and port to it.

If you use DIM, in ~/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/UserAccounts/ is a <User>.ini file showing all paths DIM knows about, thats a good starting point.
