Do I need to uninstall 4.8 before installing 4.9?

Extremely basic noob-type question:  Should I uninstall 4.8 before installing 4.9?   Should I back up anything before uninstalling?   Will I have to re-download my content if I uninstall?

I guess that's 3 questions... sorry...  :)

Same answer to all of them: no. Running the 4.9 manual installer, or using DIM to install, will automatically uninstall 4.8 first. You shouldn't need to back anything up. And installation of program updates doesn't touch content, the two are completely separate.

Be aware that the free default content has been updated since 4.8, don't forget to install the new "Default Resources" and all the Genesis Starter Essentials sets.

One thing you will need to keep an eye on, though, is plugins. The ones that are included in the D|S installer will update automatically, so you don't need to worry about them. But some that you can buy as extras, e.g. the full Dynamic Clothing Control plugin, only work with the program version they were built for and you will need to install the updated version.

And I just remembered something else, that I don't know much about since I don't use it; the content database. If you're still using D|S4.8, is your database still on the old Valentina CMS, or the new PostgreSQL? Earlier D|S versions still allowed Valentina to be used, but the current one only uses PostgreSQL. If you haven't already done it, you will need to convert your database before you try to use the new 4.9 — a conversion tool is included in the free downloads.

  • Thank you, that's exactly the information I needed.   Seems to work perfectly so far!   The lighting seems a little different, but I'll post that separately.
