Looking for tutorials on Sun-Sky mode and Depth of Field in DAZ

First let me apologize if this has been asked a zillion times.  I did search and wasn't able to find what I need.  I'm looking for a tutorial on how the sun-sky only option works in the environment mode.  I have the basic idea, but would like to learn more about it - specifically how the lat. and long. works, and the SS UTC offest hours etc. (Just purchased the Summer Island set and rendering is extremely hit and miss at the moment as I don't know what I'm doing).

Also, looking for a tutorial on depth of field renders.  Again, I have the basic idea, but my renders are hit and miss (managed to get it once a few months ago, not having any luck with changing the depth of field to include my character on the Summer Island.

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction.

  • To give an example on the depth of field question.  In my screen shot, to me it looks like Kalea should be in focus, but in the actual render, she is incredibly OUT of focus. I thought the front plane (if that's the right word) was supposed to be level with the front of the character.

For me the easiest way to use sun-sky is to just use the "sun dial" under render settings, and then you can physically drag the positioning of the sun wherever you want it.

The only reason to use the actual latitude and longitude and time day etc, would be if you wanted to duplicate the exact sun position of a given time and place.

Regarding Depth of Field. This article by Flipmode might help :)

One thing I find that helps with using DoF is changing the colour of the DoF planes, with the Camera you are going to render through selected go to the Camera tab and in Display change the DoF plane colour to something distinctive. I think you will then find that you model is between the wrong planes and a surf board and palm tree are in focus.

Looking at your scene, I can tell that your figure is in the out of focus zone.  That first plane is stationary and isn't where the DOF box is.  That box area with the two planes BEHIND your figure is the box which should surround your figure to have her in focus.  One trick you could use is to open the auxiliary viewport and set it to nvidia with you camera set in the viewport setting.  Have your scene just the way you have it in your screenshot so you can see the DOF box as you reposition it and then move it back down to where you figure is.  I think you'll find she comes into focus when that box is surrounding her.
