Base Daz included items not included?

So, I'm very new to Daz3D and I've been trying to familiarize myself with it. I have found it *extremely* difficult to locate assets - clothes, poses, etc. I understand that the base download is limited, but working with a male character there is only *one* outfit? Really? I thought at first that it was just because I couldn't find anything and then I stumbled across this "Lost and Found" directory and it was *full* of clothes! Only, they all say that the file doesn't extist. I looked at the download manager and the items are installed (some examples are "Basicwear Unimesh fits" and "Basicwear for M4"). They're not there even though the install manager says they are installed. I even uninstalled them and reinstalled them to be sure.

What am I doing wrong?

Check mapped content directories in Daz Studio vs installed directory for the content in Install Manager. It sounds like the CMS was running, that files were installed and entries were added to the database, but the installed path is not mapped in Daz Studio.

Which content tab are you looking at? There are two, the Smart Content tab, and the Content Library tab. Smart Content doesn't directly show your installed content, it shows a sorted and filtered view of a database of links to your content. The Content Library tab shows Categories and Products views, which are also driven by the same database; if anything goes wrong with the database, these views might not properly show what you have installed.

The Content Library tab also has Poser and DAZ Studio Format views, which do show the actual content files as they're arranged on your computer — this is independent of the database, so even if the database breaks down completely you'll still be able to get at your content (although it might not be as easy to find everything).

    Thanks for your responses guys!

So, I found where the files are located. They are *.pz2 (Poser?) files. Hmmmm. I tried importing instead of just dragging one and it wouldn't allow it, saying that the item requires a target for that action. I tried it (just to be thorough) with the Base Genesis figure, Genesis 2, and Genesis 3 characters selected - in all caes, no error, but nothing happened either. I tried selecting a specific body part that it might be associated with - still nothing. I tried selecting the hips - since that's the root of characters - again nothing. I checked the downloader, it *specifically* says in the tags Daz 4.5+ even though these seem to be poser items. Why would the basic Daz3D come with unusable/incompatible items?

Thanks for your help, guys - this is so frustrating!

The Michael 4 Basicwear is not, as far as I am aware, included with the current or recent builds of DS. Are you sure this came with DS and not from some other package?

You are in the wrong folder. Poser content is a challenge to navigate when starting out. (if the m4 basicwear really is now included free, it didn't used to be)

DAZ can use the original Poser formats (pz2, cr2) without having to go to the import option as DAZ3D was created so if Poser died DAZ would still have a market for their content (Poser's future is looking brighter now than it did then). Consequently, the DAZ software is pretty barebones content wise and everything is geared to selling content. That's an important lesson to learn early in the DAZ game - though it's not so bad if you make use of the massive amount of freebies on the internet (mostly M4/V4 stuff), and of course obj formats are perfectly fine for static props and environments.

You found the M4 Basicwear Pz2's in "\Runtime\Libraries\Pose\M4 Clothing\M4 Basic Wear" correct? pz2's are material and pose formats, not clothing (the whole MAT pose concept is confusing, just know that for Poser this usually the rule unless the material is an mc6 which you can't open without manually converting it with a text editor and stuff). You'll need this after loading in the clothing cr2.

You need the M4 Basicwear cr2's which you can find from the content library pane Figures -> M4Clothing -> M4 Basic Wear (on your computer it's located here: \Runtime\Libraries\Character\M4Clothing\M4 Basic Wear. You always want to know where content is installed.) Don't import, just double click with Genesis selected in the scene tab. cr2's are figures, clothing, and props that are rigged (poseable because of digital "bones" not morphs)

You can't really use it on the Genesis 2 Males unless you get the M4 autofit clone, same for V4 on Genesis 2 females. If you want to use M4V4 stuff on G2 figures, watch for sales and get them when you can, the amount of freebie options you can use will skyrocket. Weird things will happen in the boob region on v4 to genesis autofits.

Smart Content is by default just for DAZ creations created after they started using meta-data for content management. 3rd party content and older DAZ content doesn't typically have meta-data by default (especially if it's poser content.)

Basicwear for M4 is currently Free, so is Basicwear for V4 Unimesh

To the OP: pz2 files are material presets, you'll need to load the clothing it goes with in the Poser Format Library>Figures>M4Clothing>M4 Basic Wear.  With the clothing selected, double click on the pz2 material preset to apply the material to the clothing.

I'm now wondering if my original post should have been shorter...  ;D I packed it full of information I wish I had when first starting out but maybe I over did it.

Hmmmm, I took a closer look in the Install Manager and you're right! It was free on the Daz3D site. Well, now I know why! Since I don't have Michael 4 - I won't be able to use it! I guess there really *is* only one outfit!

    Thanks for your help guys!

I took a closer look at the information in the Installer and you're right! It was a free download from the site!

Also, I managed to find the stuff (*finally*!) and make it work! It's just confusing - the navigation all looks the same, but in *this* location it's a material, in *that* one it's a prop.

Thanks so much for all of your help guys! :D

Michael 4 clothing will AutoFit to Genesis, then you can save that as a Figure Asset (File>Save as>Support Assets>Figure Prop Asset), AutoFit that to Genesis 2, save that as an asset, and AutoFit to Genesis 3 (or stop when you get to a figure you want to use, of course). Therea re also items in the store (such as Wear Them All) which will allow you to jump across the intermediate figures.
