How to make my Bot Genesis model have Metallic skin look?

SFAMSFAM Posts: 50

Can someone explain to me, step-by-step, how I can get my Bot Genesis (robot clothes - http://www.daz3d.com/bot-genesis) to have the metallic looking skin as seen in the promo, or direct me to a place where I can learn how?

I've read and read about shaders, and mats, and lights, and tried several ideas explained in these texts - and I have to say I'm as lost and confused now as when I started.  I even tried reinstalling the model as nothing seemed to be working as I thought I understood it to be.

It's my understanding that this model came with everything I need to match this metallic effect (and it probably does), but I just can't seem to correctly connect this dots!  I don't remember having this problem in Poser (many years ago), but I've either lost that knowledge or I'm missing something in DAZ Studio (probably just lacking a good understanding of what I'm doing).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

DAZ Studio 4.9x, Iray rendered, I have DAZ Advanced Lighting Bundle, and I seem to have the DAZ Uber shaders (may be standard  with DS), etc.

Screenshots (one, of my DS Iray screen, one, of a page from promo showing materials info and desired results) included for possible help or info.

Thanks!

Firstly, if you are rendering in Iray, those presets are of no help...they are 3Delight materials and this is one area where the autoconversion is more likely to end up looking like plastic as opposed to metalic.

Let's start with the surface labeled 'chrome'....select just it, then scroll down to the Shader Preset > Iray...look for the Daz Uber folder...then pick one of the metals (I'd say try Silver) >CTL-click to apply it...select Ignore in the dialog box (this keeps any bump maps that may already be applied).  Repeat for the others...picking one of the other metals for the dk_metal (maybe Iron) and metal_lt (nickel or magnesium alloy).  For the glow...use the emissive shader, setting the Emissive temperature to 6500K and the Emissive color to a blueish (I think) color, if it isn't.

    That should get you started...

Mjc1016, thank you once again for providing quick and complete direction and guidance to solve my problems!  I didn't use your exact directions, well I did, but soon realized I could now use the mat and shader presets included in the model package.  Wow, everything looks exactly as I was hoping, and maybe even a little better than expected once I started twirling dials and experimenting!  Your very concise directions really helped me gain a far better grasp of these new tools, as you have done several times now.  I sure appreciate all your help!!!

One further qestion for this process - how can I create or see ground shadows using this 3Delight render engine?  I looked and looked, but couldn't find any shadow options in the 3Delight settings box. I had to fake some from an earlier Iray render (layer in PS).

And finally, how did you (and therefore me, in the future) know these were 3Delight optimized materials/presets?  What tipped you off?

Wow, this 3Delight render engine sure is FAST, at least with this type of render!  From an hour in Iray, to 20 seconds in 3Delight (4000 x 3200ppi)  I was so shocked I had to take a check reality for possible alien abduction (missing time)!

    Thanks again!!!
