A very expensive Saxophone LOL

As I have been trying out some Iray shaders on my animatable Saxophone, I thought it was time to see if I could create a Video using Iray
As it takes a long time to fully render an image using IRAY, in my case around 10 min's using a I7 4 Gig Quad. It would take months if not a year to fully render the Video, so as a compromise I
Set the rendering options to the following
Min samples 0
Max samples 300
Max time 60 seconds
Render Quality 1
Rendering Converged ratio to 60%
I ended up with 8800 seperate jpeg images 1920x1080 around 9 days to render them all
The rendered AVI took around 15 min's to complete using Virtual Dub file size 56 Gig
The Magix Mpeg4 Video took around 30 Min's to complete allowing for the addition of the wave file and a bit of editing, file size 160 Meg

I really enjoyed that! Nice job! It makes me want to go get out my clarinet and practice! I doubt I would sound as good as that Sax, though, as it's been a long time since I've done anything with it. I agree with @Khory. Seeing that Sax play itself was almost magical!

I think he made it and composed the music. There are some other videos on Youtube showing the sax as well.

The model was made using Blender and a lot of surfing was needed to find out how it was constructed
The Tube support ends are just Spheres and stretched Cones
The Tubes and Rods are two cylinders one inside the other
The holes are again just tubes inside the main body
The Caps and Pads are squashed Spheres
The Body is made from a Cylinder extending each of the faces, you could also do this by creating the curve of the object then rotate it 360 deg making the shape you like
The Caps, Pads and their Levers are joined together
The Tubes are all left seperate
All the remaining levers are left seperate
All the objects were then exported from Blender as seperate objects into a folder
Each of the objects were then imported into a group named Saxophone in Daz Studio
Each of the objects pivot point was set, so it would move at the right point
Each of the objects were then made into figures, this allowed the hip bone to be set at starting point 0 ready for animating
The whole tree of objects were then saved as a scene file and also as support asset
I also exported the whole as an object, which allowed me to import it into Blender for modification and then reimported what I wanted back into Daz Studio
Now I could move each object part seperatly using the Daz Studio Sliders
I then applied normal shaders to every part using the surfaces tab controls, I have now changed all the shaders to use the Iray Shaders
The model was then saved at a number of stages in it's progress just in case
Lighting was added to the scene for the normal shaders.
Whilst all this was going on, I had to learn how the Sax operated, so I found lots of videos on the net that showed me how to play a Sax and which parts moved together
The movements of each part is done by creating a profile that can be loaded into Casuals great MIDIload program. The profile was a Mega challenge on it's own as all the parts had to be synced together
I used Sax Tutor to find out how a Saxophone note would be played usually with a number of it's keys played at any given time, all this was added to the profile
As a Sax Bb isn't that note on a Piano or Keyboard this was a lot of fun to sort out net alone what MIDI note number it was allocated to
Now the Sax could be animated using the profile in any Key and at any Octave
I then composed a song and made a MIDI and a Wave file that started and stopped at the same time
Each instrument is layed down on a seperate MIDI channel onto a seperate track using Magix Samplitude the Piano parts are on channel 1 and 3 with the Sax on channel 4
I programmed an Excel sheet to change the MIDI data so that objects moved it a better way. and standardized the MIDI file for a Drum, Piano, Keyboard and now the Sax
I've made a few Videos of how to animate a Drum and Keyboard, the same techniques were applied to the Sax
It's all just for fun and is work in progress. Hopefully I've got most of the Mechs working as it should, but there is always room for improvement

Very nice work, defiantly a lot of work & effort in this project. your results are very impressive. I know what you mean about rendering animation in Iray, it is very very time consuming, if not a impossible endeavor if your trying to create a full length film, It be great to have access t a render farm for Iray films.
I wanted to ask if you try using 3Delight with UE2 light? , I achived some pretty decent results using 3delight. its just takes a little bit of practice to get the lighting right. But I can tell you from experience 3delight is 100 times faster when rendering animation.

I have used 3d Delight and using Spots and other lighting it's very effective, the other video's I've rendered using open gl are very fast. I can create a 5 min video in under 5 hrs.
I've not used UE2 lighting. The Iray surfaces were on offer so I gave them a try, but I was somewhat amazed how well they worked. Software rendering often produces lovely results but in video terms it takes ages to render. thankyou and everyone for your comments
