using templates that come with products to make textures help or ?

does anyone have any good tips on using the templates that come with most of the products? I did some keyword searching before I started this post, I also purchased the tutorial from renderosity put out by "SV texturing for beginners" but i seemed a little dated and was hard to work out in a more modern version of Photo shop. the keyword searches on the forum were not that helpful either I tried texturing, texturing with templates and so on. If any one has some good links advice or suggestion for tutorials the help would be appreciated. thanks for taking the time to read
