bump maps with iray render dont seem to work

its a shame if that was true, it seems that some older characters with bumb maps totally dont show at all, but when rendered with 3delight. bumps all show perfectly.

some people mentioned thats there should be sub division on the object. how about it it were a character? increasing the subdivision doesnt seem to do anything for the bumps

anyone know how to solve the problem?

Tweaking the subdivision is a solution for the wrong problem — that improves Displacement in an Iray render, not Bump.

Are you changing the Surfaces to actual Iray type, or leaving them as 3Delight and depending on the auto-conversion? Remember the two render engines are very different, and relying on auto-conversion means you don't have proper control of what comes out in the final render.

Note that "older characters with bump maps" might actually have Poser-style materials — these will definitely not work properly without tweaking, since Poser bump settings loaded directly into DAZ|Studio tend to come in as a small percentage of a small fraction of a millimeter (in other words, virtually mirror-smooth).

Studio uses the centimeter as the 'base' unit.  So a bump setting of 0.1 is 1 mm  at 100% strength...that's how you end up

  • so what works for 3delight renderer will not work for iray renderer. i see the bump on 3delight but nothing shows up on iray render.

any help in tweaking will be appreaciated

  • current settings is bump strength is at its max, at 200% and positive bump is at 100000.

so im not sure if the value is still low?

Umm....so you want to look like the item is raised 2 kilometers?

The amount is in centimeters!  200% strength means 2x that amount.

Also, is the item in question actually using an Iray material?  There is no guarantee that an auto-converted material will correctly transfer the bump map, especially if the original material is not using the Daz Default shader.

  • its a old michael 4 character muscles, is there no way to convert these characters for use in the new daz3d?

You need to apply the Iray Uber shader...select the surfaces, then find the Iray Uber, hold down control and click on it...select Ignore when it asks about replacing the maps.

There is also a set of Iray materials, by Darwinsmishap on ShareCG, that can be used 'generically'...just use the control-click to apply them, keeping the original settings (unless you have Trystan, all you need from that package is the 'Base').

Another set is over at MostDigitalCrations.  This set is for V4, but it will work on any Generation 4 character...again, control-click is required.

    http://www.most-digital-creations.com/skinray.htm

All of the above will require some adjustments for each skin you apply them to, but once you have settings you are happy with, save an Iray preset for that particular skin.

There is also this package in the store...

And here is a render using the MDC V4 preset, slightly tweaked.
