I'm using 3Delight, when using Iray I've found it takes longer and gives pretty similar results. I messed around with the settings on the lights and got rid of the glowing.
Looks like you need to change your light's Shadow Type to Ray Traced and play with Shadow Softness (start with 50%). Although you'll get longer render times with RayTracing in 3DL.
Also check Shadow Bias - for a close-up you may well need to lower that (it's an offset, in cm, between sahdow and source to avoid mesh self-shadowing but it can cause issues in tight corners (or indeed with tights) if it is too high.
Raytraced shadows are now (actually have been for some time) the recommended shadow type for 3Delight.
I did a test yesterday evening...using a light set for V4 that I've had forever, that uses deep shadow maps... 4 minutes 32 seconds to render. Raytraced shadows 1 min 24 secs. So, not only do they eliminate a long standing bug, they are now much faster.

I've just tried a test myself, but for me the raytraced shadows take much longer than deep shadow maps. Is there something in the settings I should alter? (Also it says in the light tabs "Raytracing software only", I have no idea what that means)
That is not 'nostril glow', you have upward lighting so of course the inside of the nostrils are going to be lit. You also have the bump setting on the Face surface too high.
Enable Progressive Mode...that turns on the 'raytrace hider' (3DL speak for the raytracing specific renderer)....that should give a 3x to 6x speed boost to raytraced operations (and at least a noticeable boost overall).

I turned on Progressive Mode and rendered using raytraced shadows and it was certainly faster than last time. However, it was still about twenty minutes longer than shadow mapped. Are there any other settings I should look at to speed it up?
Check the render settings for 'ray depth' (I forget the exact name).
For your 'simple' scene you can get away with only 1 bounce.
Every time you re-install or update Studio it has the annoying habit of re-setting this to a very high 6 or 7!

Lower the translucency setting (I assume that you are u sing Iray render engine?), or dial down the light.

Yeah, but at least you don't have to wait for it to create all the Deep Shadow Maps. That drove me crazy before I switched to ray tracing.

Cheers for the info guys. Haven't used ray tracing for quite a while, so next time I'll give it a go.

The test renders I did. The second one is raytraced and took much, much longer than the shadowmapped one, for very little difference.
Oops, the first one is the raytraced one.
What version of Stduio are you running?

I'm using 4.8.
I'd expect the nostrils to be lit, but before I changed the light settings they were far brighter than all the other skin.

Thanks, I'll give that a try tomorrow.

What is a "deep shadow map", again?
Here's the Pixar definition...

3Delight's definition/feature set is very similar (couldn't find a nicely worded version).
