How to tell which scenes are compatible with Iray

DDCreateDDCreate Posts: 1,404

I have read some threads that say anything created for DS4.6 or older will most likely not work in Iray. There is an environment I would like to buy that seems (visually to me) to be an older environment but says it's compatible with DS4.9

I also understand that environments that are made with SkyDomes interfer with Iray as well. How can I tell by looking at the product page which are which? It's upsetting to buy a env I think is going to be great for a scene only to find that it's functionality is limited regarding light options.

Thanks for your help.

With some of the descriptiosn it can be hard to tell ... but as this comes in both Poser and DS versions I'd be inclined to say it's fine with DS4.6 and 3Delight.  I do have it, and am pretty sure it has non-Iray materials, but I'm not on my usual PC so can't say for certain.

So you're saying it's a NO GO with Iray?

Not having Iray materials does not mean 'no go'...it means that you would need to do them yourself.  Not an impossible task...

The first step would be to see how well the automatic conversion of materials works.  If it works, just applying the Iray Uber, with preserving the existing textures should go a long way to making 'optimized' Iray material presets.

    Okay. Thanks for the advice!

I have Urban Street!  It loads in with 3Delight mats only, but it looks pretty good with just the one-click Iray Uber Base shader conversion.  Here's a quickie render using these lights I use for everything and the default HDR.Urban Street

Often times you can just delete the skydome, generally its a separate prop.  Then quick conversion with the Iray Uber base textures as sickle suggested and you should be able to make it work.  There's always a little bit of tweaking involved in most things 3D

Awesome! Well that is a relief! I know a use should always expect to put a certain amount of sweat into thier projects but I just kept hitting these stumbleing stones and didn't quite know how to overcome them. That picture does look great and it's good to know that even older env's can be used in a Iray world! Thanks again!
