beginner

So, I downloaded daz 4.9. The interactive tutorials won't play for more than 30-40 seconds. Then it acts like it's trying to buffer. It remains frozen, won't proceed. I've looked at the online tutorials but they don't appear to be basic enough and the curser is jumping all over the screen way to fast to be of any value. I'm coming from a pre-school level of learning 3D animation. The interactive tutorials looked like they would be perfect, but if they won't play, it's of no value. What do you recommend? I have no problem starting at the very beginning and learning, but I need something functional. It appears like there are tons of youtube tutorials, but I need something at a beginner level.

I have 3 masters degrees and a Doctorate degree, but not in this field. I can learn, just need someone to point me in the right direction.

OK, so to have a clue as to what you are talking about I tried the interactive tutorials and they are quite quick to load and very good from a total bigger's stand point.

I'm not having trouble and I have an antiquated laptop from 2011 and the only thing I could imagine that might be causing you trouble based on what they've had me do so far is that they asked early on for you to turn on nVidia Iray Preview Mode in the Aux View Port - that is OK at the very beginning without much in the viewport window but as the scene gets to be more complex you computer and DAZ Studio will become very slow unless you have much better HW than I have. I wouldn't recommend turning on nVidia iRay Preview mode for a viewport unless you have an 4GB nVidia 950 with 4GB RAM onboard or better GPU card and at least 16GB system RAM.

So try the tutorials over again but skip the step where they turn on the nVidia iRay Preview mode (or you can turn if back off after you turn it on).

Not knowing what sort of hardware you have, I'm wondering what you are trying to do. Do you just want to move around in the 3-D "virtual space" with actors and a few props, or are you looking to head in the direction of some specific artwork.

I've been trying this out for a couple of years; I have DS 4.8 up and running, and also an older one. Never seen any "interactive" tutorials, but I have watched some video clips. Often I find the narrator says "right?" and "ok!" much too quickly and then moves on to something radically new.

It is much easier to render a piece of fruit, say, with different lighting and surface textures, than it is to do two clothed figures fighting or dancing.

One surprise, for me, was that there's no real "collision detect" function when you are assembling a scene... things slide in an out of each other, elbows "poke through" sleeves and so on. A bit confusing at first but great if you want to do Gumby who, you may recall, could literally slip inside a giant book. Genesis and Victoria 4 can do that too, and DAZ cars can drive right through walls etc.

I did not know there was an Iray preview mode that consumes resources so there you go! Learn something every day.

Thanks all! Will take your suggestions and move forward. My ultimate goal is to produce 3-5 minute animations using friends faces and plug those into the animation.
