Pipeline to 3d MAX

Hi,
Does someone know about a good Pipeline to export Characters to 3D Max? I use the Texture Atlas in order to reduce the number of textures, but how can I reduce the number of surfaces or elements? I mean, there are several "surfaces" (in surface Editor) that share the same Texture, but they are diferent materials in 3d Max...
