Skin has a grey tinge for certain skin tones
Ive noticed for certain skin tones (mostly non white skin, like asian or hispanic) the skin has a grey tint to it. Ive been trying to get rid of it but just cant seem to figure out how.
This quick render I did below shows what I mean.
In the render, there are 4 figures. The two on the left are both Xiao Mei (Gen2 figure). The one on the top has no modifications after it was opened. The one on the bottom is using a shader that came with the figure. This shader seems to correct the greyness.
On the right side, there are two gen3 figures. The top is Selina and the bottom is Ayunia. I have played around with the other materials that came with Selina but other than the 3DL textures, they all had the grey tinge.
As you can see, the two figures on the bottom dont have the greyish tinge while the top two have. All 4 where rendered at the same time with Iray, with 1 distance light (15000.0 lumens, 6500.0k for temp, everything else at default settings, and hitting the figures face on)
The product pages (links below) have pictures of what the figures are supposed to look like. They were all brighter and more orange/tan.
Do I need to get a shader or something (simular to the one that came with Xiao Mei) to correct the tone?

I am guessing your using 4.9 and that Selina has an Iray material that was created before the beta for 4.9 (which has a fix by nvidia for an issue with how sss/translucence is handled). The fix for the older material files is to be sure that that in the shader tab the skin surfaces have Base Color Effect set to scatter & transmit which will give you an option for sss reflectance tint. That should be set about 1.00 0.88 0.69. That should put the skin right or close to if it was done before 4.9.
Thank you for the response.
So I did the things you said and its greyness has been corrected signifcantly.
Comparison between original and the base color effect correction:
Still need to adjust the other parameters to fix the darkness though
I remember @josh.pactor posting a Selina render in the Growing Up thread where the skin looked pretty natural.
May be he can help here with the settings he used. I am assuming he used studio 4.9
After playing around with the translucency, SSSreflectance tint and transmitted colors, I managed to get to something I liked. Heres a quick render of it:
For anyone curious about the material settings I used (applied to all skin):
Base Color Effect: Scatter & Transmit
Translucency Weight: .20
Translucency Color: .75 .45 .23
SSS Reflectance Tint: .98 .78 .59
Transmitted Color: 1.00 .73 .54
I've been having the same problem with the Marnie model, except that she looks like a sort of yellow wax.
Interesting, its like the exact opposite of my problem. I think ive only seen that when i use the wrong material type for the render engine type. Like a Iray material and then render with 3DL
