How can I put clothing items in a scene but not ON a character?

I am trying to get a pair of shoes in a scene but don't want them on the character, just on the floor. I have tried "Merge into Scene" but when I do, it applies them to the character. I've made sure nothing in the scene is selected. Is it a Gen3 thing? I was able to do it in a different render but those were Gen 2 items. Any ideas?

Change the "Fit To" or "Parent" to none.
