Small clothing issue. Cloth looks like leather?

DDCreateDDCreate Posts: 1,404

Sometimes when I render in Iray, certain colors of clothing like Black and Red that are supposed to be cloth (pj pants, jeans) will render and look like leather. Not so much with lighter shades. What causes that? Does anyone know how to adjust that?

Thanks for the help!

My guess is that they need a minor adjustment due to lighting. What kind of cloth it is suppose to be would effect what sort of adjustments got made however.

Well they are supposed to be cotton I guess. How do i adjust lighting to effect clothes but not the whole scene?

One possibility: What shader are you using for the clothing? If it's a 3Delight shader, it'll be converted at render time to work with Iray, and this conversion is a "best guess" -- though often, "best" leaves something to be desired. Be sure all your surfaces are using correct Iray shaders. These always appear with a MaterialID node at the top of the list when you view the surface in the Surfaces tab.

If it is only one or two surfaces I would adjust them and not the lights. And Tabor is right, check that they are Iray surfaces first. If they are and they look leathery my first suggestion would be to increase the roughness some.

And the roughness is in the surfaces tab too I assume? I apologize I'm not in front of the program at the moment.

But thank you both for the tips!

One technique that I have used successfully to modify clothing is to apply the  "Cotton Keep Maps" shader in PD Iray Shader Kit 1. If you have that, give it a try. It will retain your original clothing texture maps but change the surface settings.

Yes.. it should be just below glossy reflectivity. Unless cotton is specialy treated it tends to be  pretty rough on the micro level which means it it should have little or no gloss.
