I think some of us remember the good old days of taking pictures and moving pictures (super 8) , way back when you still had to pay for developing the footage or the photo (remember Kodak). Those days you had to stop and think about if you wanted to snap the shutter or roll the film, because the costs were prohibitive. The digital revolution changed all that. it doesn't cost much beyond the price of a SD card to capture now. I've probably taken close to 30,000 digital images, (alot of them not very good) some for textures, some landscape references, obviously a ton of family photos, sometimes just curious things that get seen through the course of a day. Advantage of one of those small pocket digital cameras is, you can have it with you all the time. An interesting by product of snapping countless image, you start developing a way to frame the shot, thus you learn composition especially when you look back at the images you took. You start self editting, you become your own editor, with the "What if" process. What if I angled the camera this way, what if I had focused the subject to fill up more of the frame, what if I tilted the camera. Time for a reshoot. Using one discipline (photography) to develop the skills for your other passion ( 3Dart ) will improve both.
Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but in the Composition Contest for January, NeilV_1 had this link about a couple of free props for DAZ (by Jaderail) and Bryce (by David Brinnen Horo). (sic) (Yes, I know that's really 2 different people...)

Invaluable for taking texture photos (macro) or general reference photos (wide angle and fish eye) with a cell phone.
FB - I took tons of photos back in those days. Luckily, my uncle had a darkroom for developing B/W photos so I took a lot more B/W photos than I ever did color. It was easier back in those days to develop the B/W in an at home darkroom. I learned a lot from him. I never realized until I started using DS how much I intuitively knew about composition, but didn't really understand the basics of it until trying to put together a shot instead of reacting to a shot and taking it quickly. Now, if I can just apply what I know and try to understand the concepts more I might actually get good at this stuff.
dHandle - Kismet reminded us of the link for the camera prop and I put in the link for it at the top of the thread, but forgot about the Bryce one . I'll fix that. Thanks for reminding me. I have the camera prop, but haven't unzipped it so I can use it in DS yet. I really need to take a look at that. I think I, also, have the one for Bryce, but that program has been a little beyond me as yet. One of those things I played around with a little, but haven't figured out. Love the stuff that pops up in the gallery from there, though. Sonja, Ice Dragon Art, has played with it. She had a nice render not too far back using Bryce.

Great discussion! I think it is important to first start with a concept that is trying to be conveyed, and then think of some different ways that can be done and then apply devices. With a strong concept the devices will fall into place. Also, there is no substite in my mind for frequently sketching out thumbnail sketches to nail down basic directions.
I do take a small sketch book with me so I can quickly sketch out an idea when it comes to mind. They are usually quick and dirty and look like scribbling though lol
Using a sketchbook is what I have started again as well, for the moment mainly to get an idea what I want to have in my render as a ligh situation, sometimes to catch an idea befor it gets lost again.
Quick and dirty is it for me with sketches. I can't be too precious or it hinders my ability to get good ideas out. Some days they work out, and sometimes, they just don't. Here is about as loose as I like to keep them. Not precious at all. Haha!
Oh good now I don't feel too bad. That's pretty much how mine look lol. Coming from the 2d art world its hard for me to just leave things this messy lol. I always have this strong desire to sketch it out as close to reality as I can get it. I have been trying to train myself out of it though.
Excellent advice. I still find using paper and pencil the best way to solidify ideas. Try not to make anything too precious early in the process. you need that flexibility to allow it to develop. Rigidity kills possibilities. Ideas are ephemeral and fleeting, but they're full of possibilities while they're in that flexible state. You want to focus on the concept, the technical rigid stuff can happen later.
Does anyone know if Jaderail's Free Golden Rules Camera Prop for Daz V1.5 (or any later versions, if available) will work on a Mac OS X 10.11.4? If not, is there anything comperable to it available for Mac-Users? I saw that there are some testers of his software out there. Is anybody still testing any version of his software?

I just downloaded it and tried it in DS 4.9.1 and am on 10.11. 4. You load the camera prop and use the presets to change the type (thirds, golden spiral) and positioning. There is a pdf and it explains pretty much.
